Talking Tails by Ann Love, Bill Slavin and Jane Drake (Book Review 2010-69)

Product Description

Pets and their owners appear together in a book as heartwarming as it is informative. From our earliest beginnings, we have shared our lives with animals. Jane Drake and Ann Love explore the ties that humans and their pets have formed. With fun and fascinating facts, they address Dog People and Cat People. (Why does a cat wind around her owner's legs? She's rubbing her owner with glands on her face to say "you're mine.") They also introduce us to more unusual pets. There's Polly the parrot, who lived through the Klondike Gold Rush to be 126 years old by belting back whiskey, swearing, and biting gold miners. And, of course, there are fish and reptiles, rodents and horses, all of whom can be beloved pets. As useful as it is fun, Talking Tails is a must for children who have or want a pet.

About the Author

ANN LOVE and JANE DRAKE, sisters and coauthors, have written many award-winning books for young readers, including Cool Woods: A Trip around the World's Boreal Forest; Snow Amazing: Cool Facts and Warm Tales; Trash Action: A Fresh Look at Garbage; Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy; and Alien Invaders: Species That Threaten Our World. They share a lifelong interest in the environment and the wild, travel extensively, and, through their books and presentations, inspire children to be more observant of the world around them. Ann Love and Jane Drake live in the Toronto area.

BILL SLAVIN has illustrated over seventy books for children, including The Big Book of Canada by Christopher Moore and It's a Snap: George Eastman's First Photograph in Monica Kulling's 'Great Idea Series', biographies for the very young. He has won the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award, the Blue Spruce Award, and the Zena Sutherland Award for Children's Literature, among many others. Bill Slavin lives in Millbrook, Ontario.

LOVED IT

This book is not only adorable but it is full of facts about dogs, cats and other pet-type animals.  There is also a fascinating time line about animals that runs through the whole book  at the bottom of each page.  Obviously, I am a dog person, but the stories in the book gave the pros and cons about each animal and would help a child decide which would be the best pet for their family.  There is also a great poster that folds out from the dust jacket.  This would make an excellent gift to any child who adores animals or a child's library.

Can Laurel piece everything together quickly enough to control her power, which is growing more potent every day? Or will she set the stage for the most lovestruck, infamous prom in the history of the school?

    LOVED IT

I really enjoyed this fantasy debut from Amy Crecount White.  The story was told in just the right tone and set the stage for a believable account of one girl and her ability to create magic from flowers.  This book is appropriate for everyone and I think all teens and adults will enjoy it.  I liked Laurel and the fact that she grew as a person, didn't let mistakes overwhelm her and developed into a good person.  She makes good and bad choices and learns from everything she does.  There is a nice amount of romance and the fact that the story uses the common elements of flower and plants in a unique way that is credible.

Shade By Jeri Smith Ready (Book Review 2010-67)

Love ties them together. Death can't tear them apart.
Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.
Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.
    Well, sort of.
Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.
It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding--and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.
As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart...and clues to the secret of the Shift.

      ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

I haven't wanted to stay up and read all night in a long time and I  had to stay up and finish this.  Of course, Shade is a paranormal romance for young adults, but it has a unique perspective that is different from the usual stories.   The writing is just beautiful, the characters well-drawn and the story believable.  The dialogue is sharp and snarky and yet still sweet.  You will get sucked right into this one.  My biggest problem with the book is that I will have to wait a year to get the next installment.

Parents:  This book is recommended for older teens since there is sexual situations, drug use (although shown in a bad light) and language.  I don't think it is anything wose than what is on TV, but I think use adult can enjoy it as well.

      The Roses are in bloom!

My climbing roses are just starting to open up!  On the right is Sally Holmes and the left -- not quite blooming yet is Eden.

A close up of the Clematis growing in between -- I lost the name.

I had to buy this red one since it is called "Stairway to Heaven".  It is the newest of my roses and hasn't quite filled in all of the way.  It does make for some really great bouquets since you only need a few stems.

This is Joseph's Coat and it would bloom year round here, but I hack it back a lot in January and August.  There is white Clematis on one side and a purple one to the left which hasn't grown in the way I wanted.  In my mind it would completely cover those blank spots on the wall.

YAY -- and Fourth of July which over takes the side of the house.  I need to tie it back up again as it gets top heavy.

      Product Description

Tom Rob Smith-the author whose debut, Child 44, has been called "brilliant" (Chicago Tribune), "remarkable" (Newsweek) and "sensational" (Entertainment Weekly)-returns with an intense, suspenseful new novel: a story where the sins of the past threaten to destroy the present, where families must overcome unimaginable obstacles to save their loved ones, and where hope for a better tomorrow is found in the most unlikely of circumstances . . .
      THE SECRET SPEECH
Soviet Union, 1956. Stalin is dead, and a violent regime is beginning to fracture-leaving behind a society where the police are the criminals, and the criminals are innocent. A secret speech composed by Stalin's successor Khrushchev is distributed to the entire nation. Its message: Stalin was a tyrant. Its promise: The Soviet Union will change.
Facing his own personal turmoil, former state security officer Leo Demidov is also struggling to change. The two young girls he and his wife Raisa adopted have yet to forgive him for his part in the death of their parents. They are not alone. Now that the truth is out, Leo, Raisa, and their family are in grave danger from someone consumed by the dark legacy of Leo's past career. Someone transformed beyond recognition into the perfect model of vengeance.
From the streets of Moscow in the throes of political upheaval, to the Siberian gulags, and to the center of the Hungarian uprising in Budapest, THE SECRET SPEECH is a breathtaking, epic novel that confirms Tom Rob Smith as one of the most exciting new authors writing today.

Coming home from a Hawaiian vacation with her best girlfriends, Lucy Fisher is stunned to find everything she owns tossed out on her front lawn, the locks changed, and her fiancé’s phone disconnected—plus she’s just lost her job. With her world spinning wildly out of her control, Lucy decides to make a new start and moves upstate to live with her sister and nephew.

But then things take an even more dramatic turn: A fatal encounter with public transportation lands Lucy not in the hereafter but in the nearly hereafter. She’s back in school, learning the parameters of spooking and how to become a successful spirit in order to complete a ghostly assignment. If Lucy succeeds, she’s guaranteed a spot in the next level of the afterlife—but until then, she’s stuck as a ghost in the last place she would ever want to be.

Trying to avoid being trapped on earth for all eternity, Lucy crosses the line between life and death and back again when she returns home. Navigating the perilous channels of the paranormal, she’s determined to find out why her life crumbled and why, despite her ghastly death, no one seems to have noticed she’s gone. But urgency on the spectral plane—in the departed person of her feisty grandmother, who is risking both their eternal lives—requires attention, and Lucy realizes that you get only one chance to be spectacular in death.

      About the Author

Laurie Notaro was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She packed her bags for Eugene, Oregon, once she realized that since she was past thirty, her mother could no longer report her as a teenage runaway. She is the author of The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club, Autobiography of a Fat Bride, I Love Everybody, We Thought You’d Be Prettier, and An Idiot Girl’s Christmas. She is currently at work on a plan B (to take effect when her book contract runs out,) which consists of options with minimum dander of office politics, including selling hot dogs at Costco, selling hot dogs from a street cart, selling hot dogs at high school football games, or being the Stop sign holder for road construction crews. She avoids raccoons both day and night and fully expects to be run out of her new hometown once this book is published. At press time, she is still married, her cat is still alive, and she has an adorably disobedient dog named Maeby, who wears sweaters and loves chicken strips. (Clearly, Notaro has no children.)

      ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

It seems all of my favorite authors are trying to mix in a little paranormal with their fiction and some work, others don't. This one works!  This is pretty much a really cute ghost story for the chick lit set.  If there is one phrase that sums up the whole story it is "Surprise Demise!", the term given to a sudden accidental death by the author.  There are other such zingers in this book and well, you are just going to have to read the whole thing to find them.  Truly funny and those that enjoy Sophie Kinsella, MaryJanice Davidson or Jen Lancaster will love this one.

      Product Description

"Queen of the beach read" (Washington Post Express) Jill Kargman, returns with an uproarious tale about searching for love and starts anew on the cusp of forty.

For two decades, thirty-nine-year-old Eden Clyde has been enjoying wealth and glamour as the muse and lover of Otto Clyde, the ultrafamous and much older king of the art world. Genetically, she hit the lottery, but Eden is unlucky in love: eighteen years ago she put aside her dream of true love and marriage and turned a blind eye to Otto's philandering in exchange for a life without want. In her younger days this seemed like a fair bargain, but as forty looms overhead-and as the beauty for which she's known begins to fade-she feels the cost of the arrangement finally taking its toll on her happiness.

Eden leaves their cozy downtown loft for New York's frostier upper east Side, where she begins to search for the girl and the life she left so many years ago. With the encouragement of a raucous but lovable group of girlfriends, Eden soon finds herself embroiled in a heated love affair with Gotham's most eligible bachelor: the much younger Chase Lydon. But just as their relationship is getting serious, an old flame resurfaces. Does Eden want the life she's living-and loving-right now, or the love she left behind? On the brink of her fortieth birthday, it's time for Eden to follow her heart, but this time not even Eden is sure where that will lead.

Poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, and written with heart and humor, Arm Candy shows that although forty may sometimes feel like the ultimate F word, its never too late to find true love.

Book Review: Linger by Maggie Stiefvater (Book Review 2010-65)

      Product Description

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other.  Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack.  And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love -- the light and the dark, the warm and the cold -- in a way you will never forget.

      About the Author

Maggie Stiefvater lives in Virginia with her husband and their two children. You can visit her at www.maggiestiefvater.com.

      ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Just when I thought I couldn't find a better book than Shiver for this year, I get the sequel, Linger.  This is just beautifully written and a flat out wonderful romance.  Instead of dwelling on Grace and Sam, Stiefvator brings in Isabelle and Cole to round out the whole story and makes me demand a story just about them.  I am trying hard not to give away any of the story line, but the ending will leave you hanging again and desperate for the next book in this series.  There better be another one soon!

        ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

What a wonderful story!  Don't throw anything at me, but I liked this better than Twilight.    It is full of intrigue, romance and mystery.  You have to stay up late just to read all of it in one night.  Haven starts out as a  blah character but quickly develops into one you will miss when you put down the book.  Her romance with Iain spans centuries and you won't believe how magically Miller weaves this tale.  There is that great Kirsten Miller dialogue that I loved so much in the Kiki Strike series.  (I really want to know what happened to the rest of the series I was promised!).

BLOG TOUR: Firefly Rain by Richard Dansky (Book Review 2010-63)

        Product Description

When Jacob left home for a new life, he pretty much forgot all about Maryfield, North Carolina. But Maryfield never forgot him. Or forgave him. After a failed business venture in Boston, Jacob Logan comes back to the small Southern town of his childhood and takes up residence in the isolated house he grew up in. Here, the air is still. The nights are black. And his parents are buried close by. It should feel like home—but something is terribly wrong.
Jacob loses all his belongings in a highway accident. His car is stolen from his driveway, yet he never hears a sound. The townspeople seem guarded and suspicious. And Carl, the property caretaker with so many secrets, is unnervingly accommodating. Then there are the fireflies that light the night skies . . . and die as they come near Jacob’s home. If it weren’t for the creaking sounds after dark, or the feeling that he is being watched, Jacob would feel so alone. He shouldn’t worry. He’s not.
And whatever’s with him isn’t going to let him leave home ever again.

        LIKED IT

I have to say this is an overall good ghost story in the realm of Stephen King.  There were a few pages where I thought the writing didn't flow as well as it could, but the author soon got back on track and became very believable.  The ending has a nice twist that I didn't guess and that gets high points in my book.  I kept expecting the the theme from the Twilight Zone to be playing in the background.

Waiting on Wednesday: My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

        This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster

        Product Description

It's a JENaissance! The New York Times bestselling author of Pretty in Plaid gets her culture on.

Readers have followed Jen Lancaster through job loss, sucky city living, weight loss attempts, and 1980s nostalgia. Now Jen chronicles her efforts to achieve cultural enlightenment, with some hilarious missteps and genuine moments of inspiration along the way. And she does so by any means necessary: reading canonical literature, viewing classic films, attending the opera, researching artisan cheeses, and even enrolling in etiquette classes to improve her social graces.

In Jen's corner is a crack team of experts, including Page Six socialites, gourmet chefs, an opera aficionado, and a master sommelier. She may discover that well-regarded, high-priced stinky cheese tastes exactly as bad as it smells, and that her love for Kraft American Singles is forever. But one thing's for certain: Eliza Doolittle's got nothing on Jen Lancaster-and failure is an option.

        About the Author

Jen Lancaster is the New York Times bestselling author of four books.

        About the Author

As a child, Jennifer Haymore traveled the South Pacific with her family on their homebuilt sailboat. The months spent on the sometimes-quiet, sometimes-raging seas sparked her love of adventure and grand romance. Since then, she's earned degrees in Computer Science and Education and held various jobs from bookselling to teaching inner-city children to acting, but she's never stopped writing.

You can find Jennifer in Southern California trying to talk her husband into yet another trip to England, helping her three children with homework while brainstorming a new five-minute dinner menu, or crouched in a corner of the local bookstore writing her next novel.

National Pet ID Week April 18-24

April 18th-24th is National Pet ID week. Why is it important to microchip your pets? If this example doesn’t convince you, nothing will: Shortly after moving into a new home, a woman, we’ll just call her Kyla, got two foster dogs. It was a beautiful day, so Kyla thought the dogs would prefer the yard to the house for the hour she would be gone. What she didn’t know was that her yard’s second gate, which was not visible from the patio, had not been properly secured. So within a few minutes of Kyla’s departure, her new fosters took a walk. One, who happened to be wearing Kyla’s cat’s collar, was found instantly by a neighbor and returned. The other, Bill, who was terrified of everything and didn’t have tags on, decided to hide in the woods.
THREE WEEKS LATER Bill was finally discovered by a jogger. He was down to 13 pounds from 21, and he had a gash so deep on his leg that his muscle was exposed. The jogger called animal control, and Bill was brought to the local shelter where they scanned him and found his microchip. Because of his microchip, Bill was quickly reunited with his foster (now forever) mom and together they made the long road to recovery. Bill went on to become a well-socialized, impeccably trained (most of the time) best friend.
Okay, you caught me! I’m Kyla and Bill is my dog. It’s embarrassing to admit this happened, but the story is not nearly as tragic as it could have been. Had he not been microchipped, Bill most likely would have been euthanized like the other 56% of animals who enter shelters (National Counsel on Pet Population Study).
Having it happen to you is not a good way to learn that pets can get lost, and though microchipping your pet will not prevent it from wandering off, it will at least give your pet a better chance of finding its way home.

Need a Microchip? Simply ask your vet. Alternatively, do an internet search or scan your newspaper for upcoming pet-related events which often have microchipping booths. If you’re in the Denver area, bring your dog down to MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue’s Annual Bash on May 22nd where they will be offering microchipping for $25.

        From Mary
Kyla has more wonderful dog tales for you to read.  Be sure to check out the latest Happy Tails book in their Lost Souls: Found series. And yes, my dog is microchipped!!

        Fun Puns

        1. King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of
war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the
Euphrates, the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate,
he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan.
Croesus said, "I'll give you 100,000 dinars for it".
"But I paid a million dinars for it," the King protested. "Don't you
know who I am? I am the king!"
Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference
        who you are."

        2. Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were
avid bowlers. Unfortunately, all the Swiss league records were
destroyed in a fire, ...and so we'll never know for whom the Tells
        bowled.

        3. A man rushed into a busy doctor's office and shouted, "Doctor! I
think I'm shrinking!" The doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle
down. You'll just have to be a little patient."

        4. A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered
dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of
seagulls. One day, his supply of the birds ran out so he had to go
out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on
the road. Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he
was arrested and charged with...transporting gulls across sedate lions
        for immortal porpoises.

        5. Back in the 1800's the Tate's Watch Company of Massachusetts
wanted to produce other products, and since they already made the
cases for watches, they used them to produce compasses. The new
compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico
rather than California . This, of course, is the origin of the
        expression,..."He who has a Tate's is lost!"

        6. A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the
toilets and urinals, leaving no clues. A spokesperson was quoted as
saying, "We have absolutely nothing to go on."

        7. An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine
man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin
strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief, telling him to bite
off, chew, and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a
month, the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling.
The chief shrugged and said, "The thong is ended, but the malady
        lingers on."

        8. A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his
name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining
to the local civic official who apologized profusely saying, "I must
have taken Leif off my census."

        9. A skeptical anthropologist was cataloging South American folk
remedies with the assistance of a tribal Brujo who indicated that the
leaves of a particular fern were a sure cure for any case of
constipation. When the anthropologist expressed his doubts, the Brujo
looked him in the eye and said, "Let me tell you, with fronds like
        these, you don't need enemas."

Juggled between an endless succession of friends, relatives, anarchist boarding schools, libertarian commune dwellers, socialist rebels, and born-again circus clowns, Oran Canfield grew up viewing the inconsistencies of the world with a wary eye. The son of Jack Canfield—the motivational speaker and creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul—Oran is intensely self-conscious and reserved, but his life won't seem to leave him alone. Whether he's teaching two hundred eager self-help disciples to juggle (among them a woman with stumps for hands), dodging a series of wacky near-death experiences, delivering newspapers in satin pants on a unicycle, or experimenting with drugs in the back of a Mexican cop car at age thirteen, one thing's for sure: Oran's life is much stranger than fiction.
Eventually he finds some fleeting comfort in heroin, but the world proves dizzying whether he's stoned or sober. Playing drums in fringe bands and bouncing between rehab centers, he encounters a host of weird characters along the way: a devotee of obscure noise music who makes his own sunglasses out of cardboard, hooligan hockey players left in charge of group therapy, and the unassuming chess nerd who might be in the mob. Feeding a dope addiction that becomes more harrowing by the day, Oran sells off every possession and burns every bridge on the road to recovery.
With humor and wit, Long Past Stopping grapples with the paradoxes of a mad world and shows that feel-good nostrums go only so far. Sometimes the only way out is the hard one.
