Giveaway Interview IN HIS STEAD by JUDITH SANDERS @judithasanders

Book Description

November 10, 2012

Retired Army Ranger Thomas Lane once burned for the taste of gunpowder and the thrill of the battle. But as he struggles to cope with his own PTSD and the death of his eldest son, killed by an IED in Afghanistan, Lane learns that the price of war is far too dear.

When the National Guard calls up Lane's youngest son to serve, Lane knows he will do anything to save his child--even if it means going in his place, a pursuit unheard of since the Civil War when slaves were sent to war in place of their masters.

In His Stead, Judith Sander's second novel, follows Thomas Lane's crusade against the United States Army, its JAG corps, a vengeful officer, the very son he is desperate to save, and his own wife, who has the Solomon-like choice of losing either a husband or a son.

Capturing the essence of family life in wartime--the good, the bad, and the hopeful--In His Stead explores what it means to be a father and a man.

About the Author
Judith Sanders was born and raised in a rural town in New Jersey. She received her BS from Graceland College and worked as a registered nurse for many years, including serving the military as a nurse in Maryland. Sanders, a mother of three boys, now makes writing her full time career and divides her time between her homes in New Hampshire and North Carolina. Her first novel, Crescent Veil, is a reality fiction novel about a hunt for terrorists. With her second novel, In His Stead (A Father's War) Judith honors the memories of those fallen in war.

  7. From where do you get your ideas? So many storylines and novels resembling each other it is difficult to come up with something unique.....

  9. From the Author, Judith Sanders:
My ideas come from my life experiences as a nurse, mother, with my extended family & friends, my connections with military and former miltary, and my views on the world's affairs. "In His Stead" you will see came from a conversation with my nephew-in-law who was worried about his son who was graduating from high school and considering joining the service (for the bonus money) and while my nephew-in-law supported the patriotism of his son's thoughts, he was not ready to put his son in harms way and we discussed the idea of someone serving in another's place and the book was born.

  10. I was wondering if the author focused those fallen war because she suffered a loss due to the war?

  11. From the Author, Judith Sanders:
Thank you for the question about whether I have suffered a loss due to war. The answer depends on how you define "loss". My brother-in-law came back from Vietnam a different person, with severe PTSD and has not recovered over these years. My father died of mesothelioma from asbestos exposure for his work in support of WW II. And every life lost & body injured to guarantee my freedom and way of life weighs on me. Beyond that, fewer and fewer people are directly connected to the war and my message is for those people to not forget the toll it takes on our service members and their families.

  12. Hi Judith,

how did you go about researching for this story?

    ReplyDelete
  13. From the Author, Judith Sanders: First thing is that I love to do research. For "In His Stead" I first had to research whether the premise of a father taking his son's place was feasible. I began with reviewing legal documents online and then contacted a lawyer who put me in touch with a retired general from the US Army's legal arm, JAG. For the military scenes I consulted with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to ensure my descriptions of places, equipment, and procedures was accurate. For the pool shooting scene, I studied the script for the movie "The Hustler". For family matters I drew on my own experience and imagination.
