Fictional Fur Friends
WHAT A RECKLESS ROGUE NEEDS

While writing WHAT A RECKLESS ROGUE NEEDS, I realized that several of my books include pets. To be honest, I’m a pantser, meaning I don’t do a lot of plotting. Ideas pop into my head and I trust my gut instincts. Yet, it occurred to me that the pets in my historical novels play important roles in the lives of my heroes and heroines. My previous novels include two King Charles Spaniels (affectionally named Byron and Caro!), a kitten who squeaks (modeled after my son’s squeaky cat), and a Collie who is afraid of thunder. Often the pets are a source of humor, but they also help us see the potential for tenderness in the hero.

In my newest release, the hero Colin Brockhurst, Earl of Ravenshire returns to his father’s house after a lengthy absence. When Colin greets his twin half-sisters, he learns that they have acquired a new dog that they named Hercules. Colin assumes this must be a big dog, but as it turns out, Hercules is only a small puppy and in dire need of training. I did some research into the types of dogs that might have been around in the early nineteenth century. I learned that William and Mary brought pugs from Holland to England in 1688.

I have to admit I had a soft spot for the fictional Hercules. He got into quite a bit of mischief in the book and created more than a little chaos. Here’s a scene from WHAT A RECKLESS ROGUE NEEDS that I had fun writing.

EXCERPT

Colin had just sat down with a plate of baked eggs, bacon, and a roll when he heard his father shout outside the dining room. “I’d better investigate,” he said.
Naturally, everyone at the table followed him into the great hall where the marquess stood holding the funniest-looking puppy Colin had ever clapped eyes on. It was a wrinkly pug with a black snout.
“Bianca, Bernadette!” the marquess roared.
The twins padded into the great hall with widened eyes. Colin suspected his sisters had perfected their innocent expressions.
The pug wriggled in the marquess’s hands. “Be still, animal.”
“Oh, Papa,” Bianca cried. “You found Hercules.”
“In the water closet,” the marquess shouted.
Angeline walked up beside Colin. “Oh, dear, your father is overset,” she said under her breath.
Hercules licked the marquess’s hand.
Colin covered his grin at the affronted expression on his father’s face.
“This animal is an abomination,” the marquess said.
Colin approached his father and tried to ignore the distinctive odor of urine. “Father, are you all right?”
“Do I look all right? This sorry excuse for a dog ruined my boots.” He looked over his shoulder. “Ames!”
The butler strode into the hall.
“Throw this disgusting canine into the dustbin,” the marquess demanded.
“Nooooooo,” the twins cried out simultaneously.
Margaret gathered the girls in her arms. “Hush, Papa will not throw Hercules in the dustbin.”
“Oh, yes, I will!”
Fat tears welled in Bianca’s and Bernadette’s eyes.
Colin folded his arms over his chest, knowing his gruff father wouldn’t be able to withstand their tears. Doubtless the twins knew precisely how to manipulate him.
Ames held out his hands for the dog.
The marquess narrowed his eyes at his daughters. “He stays in the kitchen. I do not want to see him above stairs ever again or he goes. Do I make myself understood?”
Bianca and Bernadette ran to the marquess and hugged him. “Oh, Papa, thank you,” Bianca said, sniffing.
Bernadette brushed her finger under her eye. Colin was fairly certain it wasn’t a tear, but he must credit his sisters for their theatrical performance.
The marquess patted his daughters awkwardly and addressed Ames. “The water closet floor needs to be cleaned.”
“Yes, my lord.”
The marquess sat on a chair, removed his boots, and signaled a footman. “The smell will never come out. Burn them.”
“Yes, my lord.”
The twins volunteered to take Hercules to the kitchen. Colin suspected they would sneak the pug to their room at the first opportunity.
“Colin, we will meet in my study in thirty minutes,” the marquess said.
He inclined his head and thought his father looked rather undignified as he walked up the steps in his stockings.

MY THOUGHTS

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Colin has misspent his youth on drink and wicked women and now must pay the price when his family home is being sold out from under him.  He always assumed he would inherit the property where his mother is buried but his father believes that he is not serious about settling down.  When Colin makes every excuse not to find a wife, his father gives him a deadline to find a wife or the property will be sold within six weeks.  His father has since remarried and now the father of twin girls, Bianca and Bernadette, and with his stepmother, Margaret, live on the neighboring estate.

Angeline has known Colin since childhood and had been at odds with him ever since.  Now that she has broken off her engagement to a scoundrel, she is shunned and now looking at life as a spinster.  Her real sorrow at the whole mess means that her little sister, Penny, won't have a proper debut, even though her father is an earl.  At a house party, Colin and Angeline are thrown together and decide to make the best of a bad situation.  She decides to help Colin take inventory of the house and with her skill and eye for design, the two actually talk instead of bait each other.

Both are in need of marriage, Colin to inherit and Angeline to repair her reputation, but Angeline will not marry just anyone. She wants to have love and even though she realizes that it may not be there at first, she decides to work for it.  Colin doesn't even realize how much he adores Angeline until it is almost too late.  SIGH!  They develop a connection that seems natural and full of chemistry.   This was a fast read for me and I didn't want to put it down.  It had a lot of humor, a bit of drama and that HEA that I crave.  Of course, a dog mixed in the plot with a little pug named Hercules.  Again, Dreiling has outdone herself creating likable characters with a plot that makes reading a pleasure.

More, please.  I really want to read about the twins but I know the next one will be Colin's friend, Harry in WHAT A DEVILISH DUKE DESIRES.  And, yes, I read every word in that excerpt since I didn't want the story to end.

Excerpt & Review WHAT A WICKED EARL WANTS by VICKY DREILING @vickydreiling @ForeverRomance

EXCERPT FROM: WHAT A WICKED EARL WANTS
By Vicky Dreiling

Setting the scene: Bellingham’s friends prevail upon him to show Laura Davenport his special skill at billiards. Here is the scene.

“You have a trick?” Laura asked.
“It’s not really a trick,” Bell said.
“Do not let him fool you,” Harry said. “It’s quite impressive.”
“Then I insist upon a demonstration,” Laura said.
Bell set both of their glasses on a side table. Then he held out his hand to her. Once again, he was struck by her small hand. When she stood, the top of her head barely reached his chin. She was far more petite than most women. “I’ll do my best,” he said, “but occasionally it doesn’t work.”
“What is it?” she said.
“You’ll see,” Harry said. “Bell is a man of many talents.”
He said nothing as he lined the balls up in a perfect triangle and set the cue ball apart. Then he picked up the cue stick and sighted the white ball. He slid the stick over his hand and kept his eyes on the target. All of his concentration was on getting the right amount of force when he tapped the ball. He aligned his body with the cue ball, focused, and took the shot. The balls scattered over the green baize surface and dropped into the various six pockets.
Laura clapped her hands. “That was amazing.”
“Our friend is an amazing fellow,” Colin said from the sideboard, where he’d poured himself a brandy.
“However did you learn to do that?” she asked.
“I just experimented,” he said.
“You are too modest,” she said. “I doubt I could make even one land in a pocket.”
“Of course you could if you know what you’re doing.” Bell beckoned her. “I’ll show you.”
She looked a bit uneasy as she neared him.
“You’ll need to remove the gloves,” he said.
Her fingers fumbled a bit as she pulled on the tips.
“Harry, let’s go into the garden for a cheroot,” Colin said.
Bell kept his expression impassive, but inwardly he applauded his friends for their timely exit.
“Here, I’ll help you,” he said. “If you’ll allow it.”
She hesitated a moment, and then she nodded.
He pulled on the fingertips first to loosen the glove. Then he reached for her upper arm and encountered silky smooth skin. As he slowly rolled the long glove down her slender arm, he imagined doing the same with a stocking and kissing the soft flesh he revealed.
Her breathing was a bit faster now and so was his. He pulled on the fingers of the other kid glove to loosen it. Then he began to roll it inch by inch down her arm. As he removed the glove, he met her gaze and almost staggered at the sultry expression in her green eyes. He stood there, powerless to move. The tension was palpable and her rose scent was like a potion swirling inside him with every breath. But he could not just stand there forever. So he cupped her elbow and led her to the billiards table and handed her the cue stick.
“It’s heavier than I expected,” she said.
He stood behind her. “Put your right foot forward and your left one back.”
She followed his instructions. “Now what?” she said, her voice a bit breathless.
“Lay the cue stick atop your hand between your thumb and forefinger.”
“This is a bit awkward,” she said.
“You’ll grow accustomed,” he said. “Now, grip the end of the stick, and slide it back and forth over your hand.”
She tried and fumbled with the stick.
He drew closer and put his hand over hers. His breath stirred the curl by her ear. “The stick is a bit long for you, but I’m sure you can accommodate it. Relax and keep a steady back-and-forth rhythm.” Lord, he was getting hot just thinking of what he was describing.
“Like this?” she said, her voice a bit husky.
“Excellent,” he said. “You want to aim squarely for the white cue ball when you take the shot and knock the blue one.”
“I doubt I can hit it hard enough,” she said.
“I’ll show you.” Then he wrapped his hand over hers at the butt of the stick and helped her slide it fluidly over her hand. “On the count of three,” he said.
A little huff of laughter escaped her.
“Concentrate,” he said near her ear.
“Yes,” she said softly.
“One,” he whispered.
She inhaled on a ragged breath.
“Two.” His groin tightened again.
“Three.” He thrust the stick forward. The cue ball smacked the blue one, sending it spinning into the pocket.
He propped the cue stick against the table. “Well done.”

She gazed at him over her shoulder. “You made the shot.” Her mouth was so close, and he wanted her too much to hold back. When their lips met, he turned her in his arms and pulled her up on her toes. He leaned over her, supporting her back with his hands. As she wrapped her arms around his neck, he captured her lips. She made a soft feminine sound, and all he could think about was eliciting far more from her.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Laura Davenport, the daughter of a vicar has married for love and even though he is twenty-four years her senior, she is really happy and adores his son, Justin.  So when, mere months after they marry, he becomes ill and passes away.  She has been Justin's mother in all ways and now that he is seventeen, he is starting to act out, carousing and drinking.  The Earl of Bellingham, known as Bell, is a known rake and has an eye to bed the lovely widow.  Bell show up on her doorstep to confront Laura about her problems with reigning Justin in.  The uncle has also heard rumors of Justin's wild ways and sets off to assert his guardianship while Bell is there with Laura.

In a moment of panic, Laura tells the uncle that the two are engaged and he has nothing to worry about.  Bell, a sworn bachelor, goes along with the plan, but soon finds his plans changing as well as he becomes more intrigued with Laura.  Bell has lost his entire family and has no plans to ever be in the position to care about people again.  As this pair become friends, a true romance builds even though both swear they never will marry.  As Bell helps Justin, he develops a connection with the boy and with his step-mother.  Yes, there are some really swoon worthy moments.

I adore how Dreiling really can create a scenario which rings true for the time period.  You can actually imagine the scheming that women must take on during the Regency period since they are no more than property during this time period.  The characters show a wonderful depth, especially with Bell, as he confides his loses to Laura. Even the secondary characters of Justin and Laura's friend Lady Atherton, are very noteworthy.  She also has pinned evil on the deserving uncle.  Now, I can't wait until the next one in this series!

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Known as a wallflower, heiress Amy Hardwick goes to London for one last season to try to change that and makes every effort to return eye contact, dance and do a bit more than wait in the wings and gossip.  She has also decided to turn her hobby of designing dresses into a bit more.  Although women are frowned upon for engaging in trade during the 1800's, she secretly cuts a deal with a dress maker and sees her creations cause a bit of a stir.  The dresses she wears does more for her visibility than anything she has tried before.  Will Darcett also notices her and although Amy will have nothing to do with this notorious "devil", she does find herself intrigued by him.  So when the two are accidentally locked in the wine cellar during a party, she finds her reputation is ruined and the two must marry. Which it seems works perfectly with Will's plans to marry an heiress to pay off his gambling debts.  This is where the story really gets interesting!

As an only child, Amy has had more freedom than most women in society during this time period but it also seems that she has a hard time coming to grips with how society limits her actions.   She has the backbone to make Will behave and actually court her, through a fun wager of her own, that the story becomes a totally swoon worthy read!  There are also many characters like Will's Aunt Hester, who add zest and plain spoken truth.  She loves to put the family in their place.  Will's sisters, Harmony, Patience and Hope are chatty and a bit overbearing but still loving towards their brother.  This story is the third in a series, but you don't need to read the other two and it easily stands alone.  It is wonderful how the Happy Ever After comes full circle for these two, who at first seem unsuited towards each other.  You will find yourself googling the fashions described in the book during this time period since the descriptions are just scrumptious!

Overall, I adored how Dreiling worked in the mores of the 1800's and gave it a bit of a modern twist making the characters of Will and Amy actually make the best of a bad situation.  Amy, although she is described as not that attractive, learns that with the right clothes, she can highlight her good points.  I know Will is described as a rake and not caring about anything except his own pleasure, discovers a responsibility towards Amy and decides he does have a conscious after all.  So far this is my favorite book in the series.  Now, I haven't read about the next book in the series but I hope it isn't too far off since Dreiling has become one of my favorite historical romance authors!

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: How to Seduce a Scoundrel by Vicky Dreiling

Description

Miss Julianne Gatewick is in a pickle. It started when her brother's best friend-for whom she's long nursed a secret tendre-agreed to act as her guardian for the Season, only to seduce her with a risqué waltz. But when the music stopped and the expectant ton waited for Marc Darcett, Earl of Hawkfield, to claim her as his own, he made his disinterest clear. Rather than succumb to humiliation, Julianne does what any self-respecting, recently discarded young miss with a wicked sense of humor would do. She secretly pens a lady's guide to enticing unrepentant rakes . . . and it becomes the hottest scandal sheet in London.

Every honorable rake knows that friends' sisters are forbidden. But suddenly Julienne has a spark of mischief in her eyes that Hawk can't resist. Try as he might to push her away, he spends his days listening for her laughter and his nights dreaming of kissing her senseless. He's always avoided innocents and their marriage-minded mothers, but has the man least likely to wed finally met his match?

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Julianne is sweet but a handful and when she is scorned, she gets revenge!  After being publicly disrespected by Marc, she starts an anonymous scandal sheet that reveals a lot of secrets.  Marc has many secrets of his own and you wonder if he can ever see far enough to realize that Julianne is in love with him.  I just thought this was a wonderful historical romance with wonderful contemporary touches.  This book does contain some of the same characters as the first in the series, but I think it can stand on its own.
