What is your favorite holiday food and why?

Turkey! I think it has to do with all those Butterball and Honeysuckle commercials I watched as a kid. Just the smell of roasting bird makes me think of family and friends gathered around the table enjoying good food and conversation.

What are you reading right now?

Debbie Macomber’s Angels at the Table. I love to read holiday romances from November all the way through Christmas, and this book hits all the right jingle bells. It’s a wonderful love story set in festive New York City with An Affair to Remember twist thrown in :o)

What was the last thing you Googled?
Crazy ski hats. Every year my family does a gift exchange and this year it’s crazy ski hats. (I really hope someone gets me the sock monkey hat—it’s sooo cute!)

What makes you cringe?

Anyone touching a filled balloon. The squeak drives me up the wall, which is exactly why my kids and husband love to do it.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!

Cassie works at her father's construction company with her four overbearing brothers.  That wouldn't be so bad, except her father thinks she should be office help only.  She really wants to be and architect and work in the field.  When she is expected to attend  the company Christmas part,  she does what she always does to get her family off of her back about her social life:  she hires an escort.  So when a handsome guy shows up at her office at the right time and dressed in a tux, she thinks she hit the escort jackpot.  Of course, the handsome guy plays along when he sees Cassie, since, hey, who would turn down a beautiful girl in a slinky red dress!

As the party progresses, Cassie has a few too many and one thing leads to another before she discovers exactly who this guy is.  It turns out even more interesting when the guy turns out to be James Sutton, her family's business rival.  The two have a chemistry that is flammable, of course, in all the right ways.  In fact, there is an accidental fire towards the end that had me howling!  There is also a little subplot between Amy, her loyal assistant, and one of Cassie's brothers.  With so many brothers, this book has the promise of a really good series.

I just loved the story and there is a lot of depth to all of the characters, even those who make brief appearances like her overprotective brothers.  There is also lots of well worked in moments of tension, all kinds of tension, both steamy and plot driven.  Everything moves forward at a perfect pace and this was really the right book at the right time for me.  It really made me forget my troubles for the five hours it took me to read this.  YAY!

My Best Childhood Christmas Gift Ever by Katie Lane

My best Christmas gift started out as my worst.  I remember peeling back the wrapping paper and thinking that Santa had made a horrible mistake.  GI Joe with Kung Fu Grip?  This wasn’t the present I had asked for.  This was a yucky boy toy.   Needing some kind of explanation for the travesty, I turned to my father, a man who just happened to be an Air Force sergeant named Joe who suspiciously resembled the doll in my hand.  My dad said only four words. 

            “Ken is a sissy.”

            Sissy?  Had my father lost his mind?  Ken wasn’t a sissy.  He was a hip guy who wore groovy white pants and striped knit sweaters, not stupid camouflaged fatigues and combat boots.  A guy with a sincere smile and dainty feet, not a mean sneer and feet the size of scuba diving flippers.  Not to mention that Ken was Barbie’s SOULMATE!!!  These were the things I wanted to yell at my dad.  Unfortunately, I had learned early on that talking back to my father was bad for your butt.  With protruding lip, I tossed Joe away and moved on to the traditional sock package.

            But later on that morning, I couldn’t help but retrieve Joe from the crumpled pile of wrapping paper.  Just to see what would happen, I carried him into to my room to meet Bubblehead Barbie.

            She was not impressed.  Like me, she had been expecting someone less macho.  But after fifteen minutes of play, both Barbie and I came to some startling realizations.  Hard, plastic muscles look gooood.  Kung Fu Grip was perfect for holding Barbie’s handbag while shopping.  And bendable joints were a doll-design breakthrough.  Bendable joints gave Joe the ability to wrap his arm around Barbie while they were chatting on the Kleenex box couch and pick her up and carry her to safety when she stopped by Vietnam to say “hi.”

            Joe turned out to be much more than just a sneering boy toy with flipper-sized feet.  He turned out to be Barbie’s SOULMATE.  The kind of loyal guy who stayed with her right up until the time my mother gave away my box of dolls to Goodwill.

            I’ve always wondered if my dad changed the course of my life that Christmas.  Not only because I ended up marrying the toughest boy in school who has an impressive set of biceps, but because I chose a career of writing about Joes—alpha-kinda guys who never mind holding a girl’s purse while she shops.

MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT
The story takes us to Quinn, the eldest of the three Conway boys and since his mother disappeared when they were kids, has taken the brunt of the abandonment.  So when Quinn, who loves nature and all it's creatures finds one of his now adult wolf pups dead, he blames the nearby rancher, Cheyenne.  She had good reason to believe that this wold was killing her cattle.  Cute meet?  I guess for the ranching world, this is normal.  The pair find common ground even though they seem to be opposites.  There is a lot of drama building with Cheyenne and you wonder if she is strong enough to pull through this latest development in her life.  Overall, a great romance that takes this cowboy story in a new direction.  For some reason, I was really reminded of parts of Little House on the Prairie where one calamity after another seems to follow the Wilder family.

MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT

This is a very wonderful and humorous read about Branble, Texas filled with characters that are so believably wacky that they are believable.  Shirlene has spunk and the need to survive which will make you proud of her.  I want a Bubba for my own since he is just so darn hunky and down to earth.  As with any small town, there are the typical types like the ancient Moses, who knows everything that is happening much like my neighbor growing up but appears to be asleep.  Don't let any of the outward appearances fool you in this story, the characters are deep and full of fun.  Oh, and happily ever after?  I should hope so!  Overall, this is a fun and lighthearted read.  I can't wait for the next one.

A Note from Katie Lane about the Double Trouble Series!

Dear Reader,

When I first got the twinkling of a storyline for my contemporary romance novel, Going Cowboy Crazy, it had nothing to do with cowboys or a small town in Texas. It started with twins. And not just any twins. I wanted my twins to be identical females who shared the same womb and genes, but who were raised in completely different environments.
So Faith Aldridge and Hope Scroggs were born, two women who couldn’t look more alike and yet be so different. Faith’s a shy introvert who was raised as an only child by older intellectuals, and Hope is a controlling extrovert who was raised in a large family by young country folks. The twins turned out to be such opposites that I probably could’ve made up a fairly good story using just their reunion as a plot. But that just didn’t seem like enough fun for me. So I took a page from one of my all-time favorite childhood movies, The Parent Trap (the Hayley Mills version not Lindsay Lohan) and did a little switch-a-roo.
That’s where Bramble, Texas, and hot cowboys came in. I mean, what could be funnier than having shy, reserved Faith step into her sister’s homecoming queen/hog-calling life amid a bunch of good-hearted but meddling Texans? Suddenly, she finds herself doing things she’s never dreamed of—nasty shots, homecoming parades, country line-dancing, and driving around town in a monster truck covered with a bunch of blatant bumper sticks and more flags than a war memorial.
But all these things pale in comparison to being thrust together with Hope’s childhood boyfriend, Slate Calhoun. And since Faith has a limited amount of experience with men, I wanted to give her the sexiest, hottest cowboy either side of the Pecos. Image, if you would, a mixture of Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, and James Dean. Get the picture? Yee-haw!
Sorta makes you want to have your own identical twin to switch with, doesn’t it? Someone who has a life a little more exciting than yours? A movie star? A wealthy mogul? A star athlete? The woman down the street who gets to stay at home and work in her pajamas? (Wait a minute, that’s me.)
If I could have an identical twin and switch for a day, I’d want my twin to be Oprah. Oh, the power of your OWN network! Or maybe that would be too much stress. How about the Olympic snowboarder Shaun White? No, I might bust a hip—freaky-deeky, dude. Angelina Jolie? Nope, I’d embarrass myself by snapping photos on my iPhone as soon as Brad disrobed.
Okay, so maybe it’s safer to just be ourselves and get our twin fix in movies and books.
