LAST CHANCE KNIT & STITCH
by Hope Ramsay

November 19, 2013
Forever Mass Market; 9781455522279; $8.00

Molly Canaday wishes she could repair her life as easily as she fixes cars. She was all set to open her own body shop in Last Chance when her mother ran off and left her to manage the family yarn shop instead. Now guided by the unsolicited-though well-intended-advice of the weekly knitting club, Molly works to untangle this mess. But her plan unravels when the new landlord turns out to be difficult-as well as tall, dark, and handsome.

Simon Wolfe returns to quickly settle his father's estate and then leave Last Chance for good. Still wounded by a broken heart, Simon is surprised when the town's charming streets and gentle spirit bring back good memories. Soon the beautiful, strong-willed Molly sparks a powerful attraction that tempts him to break his iron-clad no-commitment rule. Can Simon and Molly find a way to share work space-and build a future together in Last Chance?

EXCERPT

She peeked at his sketch. “Oh, my God. Please tell me my butt is not that big.”
It amused him to think that Molly, who seemed not to care at all about how she dressed, was still woman enough to worry about the size of her butt. “It’s not big. It’s perfect.” His heart stalled the moment the words left his mouth.
“Perfect? Get real. I swear, Simon, if you paint a picture of me from the rear I will never forgive you.”
“I’m sure it’s just your baggy pants,” he muttered, putting his pencils away.
“You think my pants are baggy?”
He ground his teeth together, his mood suddenly sinking. There was no way to make her happy. He’d watched his father have the same ridiculous conversations with Mother. And over the years, he’d had his own impossible conversations with the women in his life. They never liked the way he told the truth.
He turned the conversation. “I’m getting hungry. You said something about the Pig Place and a beer?” He had become a master at the pivot.
“You’re changing the subject, aren’t you?”
“Yup,” he said, as he started putting his sketchbook and pencils into his fi eld backpack.
“Okay, you’re right. My pants are kind of baggy,” she said in a little voice. “But that makes them really comfortable.”
“It’s okay, Molly. I didn’t mean to—”
“But in any case, I don’t want anyone recording me or my butt for posterity, or posterior as the case might be. It kind of creeps me out.”
Her shoulders slumped, and she gave him a woeful look that he might have mistaken for a female pout. But on Molly, that sad- adorable look touched something deep inside him. “Why does it creep you out?”
“Because I’m not pretty. I don’t have a great body. And I’m not particularly photogenic. Or in this case, sketch-o-genic. The idea of people looking at some image of me and making fun is just creepy.”
This admission stunned him. “But you’re beautiful. One day I’d love to paint you without—” He stopped speaking. This was the kind of talk Coach would frown upon. He’d been thinking with his heart again.
She gave him her squinty- eyed look. “You’d like to paint me without . . . what?” She stared at him for a long moment as the truth settled in. “Without my clothes? Oh, my God. You want to paint me naked?” She got up and stalked away toward her fishing gear. She was visibly upset.
And he wasn’t exactly sure what to do about it. If he told her he was only joking, it would underscore her own self- doubts. If he told her the truth, he’d be breaking his word to Coach. But someone needed to tell Molly that she was stunning.
So he prayed that Coach would forgive him for telling Molly the God’s honest truth. “You’d be lovely. Backside and all,” he said.

Book Description

September 25, 2012 Last Chance
Dear Reader,
I've been wishing for a miracle for my oldest boy, Stone, and this Christmas my prayers might just be answered!

Her name is Lark, and she's here in Last Chance, looking into her father's past-and stirring up a whole mess of trouble without meaning to. As the chief of police, Stone sure has his hands full trying to keep up with her. Ever since his wife died, Stone's put everything into raising his daughters and dodging the Christ Church Ladies' Auxiliary matchmakers. And it's clear Lark has been through some trouble and could use a place to finally call home. I only hope Stone can let go of the past soon enough to keep her . . .Goodness, I need to stop talking and finish up Jane's highlights so we can make the town tree-lighting. You come back by because the Cut 'n' Curl's got hot rollers, free coffee, fresh-baked Christmas cookies-and the best gossip in town.

PLEASE WELCOME HOPE RAMSAY TO BOOKHOUNDS~!

Favorite Holiday food and why?
Wow, this is a real toughie. I know many people make the same traditional meal for Christmas dinner every year. But at my house we don’t do that. We always view Christmas as a time to experiment with new, fancy recipes. My husband does a lot of the cooking at Christmas time and he’s made everything from the traditional standing rib roast and Yorkshire pudding, to beef wellington. So I’d have to say that I look forward to Christmas dinner precisely because it’s going to be a new culinary adventure. I
Dessert is always the same, though. (Because I make it.) It’s a yule log that takes two days to make from scratch. It’s almond sponge cake, with chocolate butter cream filling, semi-sweet chocolate icing, marzipan leaves, and meringue mushrooms. It’s got chocolate in it, so of course it’s yummy. Chocolate is my favorite food any time of the year.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished reading an advanced reader copy of Kim Law’s book entitled Sugar Springs. It’s a great read, set in a small town during Thanksgiving and Christmas time. It’s a reunited lovers story, and those are particular favorites. I think the book will be available in December.

What is the last thing you Googled?
The correct spelling of dragees, which are the little silver and gold sugar balls you put on gingerbread cookies. I was looking for the correct spelling because I just finished writing a blog about making gingerbread cookies for the holidays.

What makes you cringe?
Obviously sexist or racist speech that is intended to hurt and humiliate.

Book Description

September 25, 2012

Always putting business before pleasure, Cassie McPherson works hard for her family's construction business. That might explain why she doesn't have a date for the company Christmas party. But it doesn't quite explain why she's crazy enough to hire an escort for the event or - crazier still - why she's dying to unwrap him like a present . . .

With whiskey-colored eyes and a killer smile, James is one gorgeous hunk who really knows how to fill out a tuxedo. He charms everyone, including Cassie. And when the night ends, the party doesn't stop. As Cassie falls, literally, into his bed, James falls head over heels in love. Now he has to figure out a way to tell her the truth: he's not an escort. He's her family's fiercest business rival. But all he wants for Christmas is her . . .

About the Author
Katie Lane's interest in romance was sparked in high school in the backseat of a '65 Mustang-okay, so maybe it wasn't romance as much as raging teenage hormones. Still, coupled with a wild imagination, those make-out sessions inspired many a steamy storyline along with a strong belief that true love does prevail. Katie lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the owner of that Mustang and would love to hear from her readers.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT!

Stone Rhodes has lost his wife, and with two young girls to raise, has not been interested in moving on with his life.  As Ruby's oldest son, she and her Ladies at the Cut 'n' Curl have given up on ever getting him out of his rut of work and taking care of Lizzy and Haley.  Haley was in the car when a drunk driver killed his wife and even though she was only two when the accident happened, she still hasn't gotten over it.  Haley has been telling her father that an angel is weeping over him and when she demands an answer from her, she is told he must open his heart and move on.  This sets Haley in motion, in the way only a young girl at Christmas who wants a special present can campaign.

When Lark Chaikin, takes her father, Abe's, last wishes to heart, she travels to Last Chance to spread his ashes on the Golfing for God putt putt, which is owned by Stone's father.  Apparently, there was some interaction between Stone's grandfather and Lark's father where the grandfather died the night Abe left town.  Lark has a lot of issues mostly stemming from her job as a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist where she covers the horrors of war and natural disasters.  After witnessing her mentor and friend die in a bomb blast, she doesn't think she will ever work again.  She finds herself quickly intertwined with the ladies of the Cut 'n" Curl as they nurse her back to health when she is taken ill.  They also want to take care of her mental as well as physical.

As the town's history becomes clear to Lark, she wonders if she will ever be able to take care of her father's last wish and move on with her life.  Of course, the Ladies know what is best for both Stone and Lark and there are some really sweet and AWWW moments as these two damaged people come together under the magic of an angel and the holidays.  There is also a wonderful subplot of high school aged, Lizzy and her spunky ways trying to grow up under the watchful eyes of her father.  She is one I want to read more about.  This one will leave you a bit misty eyed, but cheered at the same time.  I need to go back and read the story of Stone and Sharon and their romance.  I just need that novella now so I can be all caught up in Last Chance.

Hope Ramsay's Christmas Memories @HopeRamsay @ForeverRomance

Please welcome HOPE RAMSAY to BookHounds!

Hope Ramsay's Christmas Memories

When I think about Christmastime memories, I don’t think about presents I may have gotten that either thrilled or disappointed.  I think about Christmas carols and trimming the tree and our big family dinner on Christmas Eve.

My parents didn’t put all that much emphasis on presents.  For one thing, my parents were of mixed religious backgrounds.  Mom was Christian and Pop was Jewish, and we kids were raised as Unitarians.  For another, my mother grew up on a farm in South Carolina during the Depression, so her idea of Christmas gifts was very different than what folks think about today.  We had a secular Christmas in our house but the emphasis wasn’t on a big pile of gifts.

Aunt Annie would always give me a box of handmade dresses, many of them hand-smocked.  She was quite a seamstress, and I loved the dresses she made for me.  I wore them all through grade school.

When I was older, my father would give me records or books he thought I should read.  And books were a favorite gift since I was a bookworm.

I think each of my brothers and I got a bicycle when we turned twelve or thirteen.  But in those days a bike was almost required transportation because there wasn’t bus service to the Junior High and my mom didn’t chauffer us around the way we chauffeured our kids these days.

I also got a stocking every year from Santa.  It would always have a package of thank you notes, a box of Whitman’s chocolates, and Lillian Vernon pencils with my name on each one.

But the best thing about my stocking was the doll.  There was always a doll peeking out of the top.  Those dolls ran the gamut from inexpensive dime store dolls that my aunt dressed to Ginny dolls, which are much like Madam Alexander dolls.  I even got a Betsy McCall doll in my sock one year.

But by far the coolest doll I ever got for Christmas was the Barbie Santa put in my stocking in 1959.  I still have her.  She’s in pretty good shape, too, considering how much I played with her.  I hate to think how much that original Barbie is worth these days.

And you know what?  Santa still puts dolls in my stocking every year.  I’ve had to dedicate my small guest room as “the doll room.” It’s filled with shelves and shelves of dolls I’ve gotten as Christmas gifts over the years.

After all these Christmases I can say without equivocation that I’ve never, ever been disappointed in a doll.

Book Description
Publication Date: February 1, 2012
Dear Reader,
Gracious me, my beautiful daughter Rocky sure could use my help. I always knew she wasn't much interested in the local boys - but who'd have thought she'd come home with English royalty?
Trouble is, Hugh wants to buy some of our folks' land. We don't want to sell, but Rocky's job depends on her closing the deal. And though Hugh's obviously smitten, I'm not sure he's right for my Rocky. Oh, he's classy and handsome - and you should've seen the way he judged pies and fixed stock cars at our Watermelon Festival! - but what do we know about him, really? I know I sound like a nervous mother hen, but after forty happy years with my Elbert, all I want is to see my little girl find the same.
Well, time for me to quit chattering and get back to Miss Bray's wet set. Always nice talking to you, and remember: the Cut 'n Curl's got hot rollers, free coffee, and the best gossip in town.
See you real soon,

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: Welcome to Last Chance by Hope Ramsay

Description

Dear Reader,

Yes, our town is way off the beaten path, but strange, wonderful miracles happen a lot around here.

I've owned the Cut 'n' Curl beauty shop for years, and I've seen folks come for a visit, then stay for a lifetime. Take Jane-that pretty firecracker of a girl who just arrived in town. I would swear she's running from something. She came with only five dollars in her pocket but she's worked real hard to make a fresh start. She's turned my son Clay's life upside down without even realizing it.

And thank goodness for that! Ever since Clay left his country western band, he's played everything too safe. He needs to take a chance on Jane. Besides, the more he tries to keep his distance, the more he'll realize that he and Jane are singing the same tune.

But I should quit ramblin' and go check on Millie's permanent wave. Next time you're in Last Chance, be sure to swing by. We've got hot rollers, free coffee, and the best gossip in town.

See you real soon,

Ruby Rhodes

She's a two-time finalist in the Golden Heart and is married to a good ol' Georgia boy who resembles every single one of her heroes. She has two grown children and a couple of demanding lap cats. She lives in Fairfax, Virginia, where you can often find her on the back deck, picking on her thirty-five-year-old Martin guitar.

 MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

After a bit of a slow start for me, this one became a sweet romance between Jane and Clay, two opposites who attracted. I am not sure if this is the beginning of a series but it should be since there are so many sassy and fun characters in a small town beauty parlor.  I could see a book for each character. Jane is running away from her past and finds Clay, a broken musician (sorry, country -- this is in the South, you know).  This book will get you in the mood for spring!
