Giveaway Review FLY AWAY by KRISTIN HANNAH @kristinfirefly @StMartinsPress

Book Description

 March 25, 2014
Once, a long time ago, I walked down a night-darkened road called Firefly Lane, all alone, on the worst night of my life, and I found a kindred spirit. That was our beginning. More than thirty years ago. TullyandKate. You and me against the world. Best friends forever. But stories end, don’t they? You lose the people you love and you have to find a way to go on. . . .

Tully Hart has always been larger than life, a woman fueled by big dreams and driven by memories of a painful past. She thinks she can overcome anything until her best friend, Kate Ryan, dies. Tully tries to fulfill her deathbed promise to Kate---to be there for Kate’s children---but Tully knows nothing about family or motherhood or taking care of people.
Sixteen-year-old Marah Ryan is devastated by her mother’s death. Her father, Johnny, strives to hold the family together, but even with his best efforts, Marah becomes unreachable in her grief. Nothing and no one seems to matter to her . . . until she falls in love with a young man who makes her smile again and leads her into his dangerous, shadowy world.
Dorothy Hart---the woman who once called herself Cloud---is at the center of Tully’s tragic past. She repeatedly abandoned her daughter, Tully, as a child, but now she comes back, drawn to her daughter’s side at a time when Tully is most alone. At long last, Dorothy must face her darkest fear: Only by revealing the ugly secrets of her past can she hope to become the mother her daughter needs.
A single, tragic choice and a middle-of-the-night phone call will bring these women together and set them on a poignant, powerful journey of redemption. Each has lost her way, and they will need each one another---and maybe a miracle---to transform their lives.
An emotionally complex, heart-wrenching novel about love, motherhood, loss, and new beginnings, Fly Away reminds us that where there is life, there is hope, and where there is love, there is forgiveness. Told with her trademark powerful storytelling and illuminating prose, Kristin Hannah reveals why she is one of the most beloved writers of our day.

MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT

Told in alternating viewpoints and flashbacks, this story of what happens after a friend/daughter/wife dies and the emotions that come into play.  Tully is still mourning the death of her friend, Kate, after four years.  Kate's husband, John is surviving but now that his sons are leaving home, he is feeling a bit adrift.  He seems to have anger over the closeness that these two best friends have shared.  Kate's daughter Marah is spinning out of control.  It seems that the whole group from Firefly Lane is on an emotional rollercoaster.

This story will have you smiling and in tears at the same time.  Tully's mother Dorothy (Cloud) comes back into her life to move the story along and give more of the history of the group.   I was really drawn to Marah, as Kate's teenage daughter spins out of control and how Tully really tries to reel her back in.  When Tully has an accident, everyone is forced to confront their messy relationships including the one between Cloud and her daughter.  Overall, this is a wonderfully told story of relationships on the verge of breakdowns.

PLEASE WELCOME REBECCA to BOOHOUNDS

This is Your 8th book. You have cut across various Genres like Children Book, Paranormal, Young Adult, Non-Fiction and others. How do You manage to do so with such sheer brilliance and vibrancy?

Thank you. 8 books? I guess you’re right. I hadn’t realized it was 8. Maybe I’m even more amazing than I thought. J Thank you for your kind words. I’m not sure I’m at all brilliant, but I do love to write. I just try to find time every day to write.

There are a lot of other romantic novels around. How does Imperfect Love standout among them and what should the readers expect from it?

Imperfect Love is not a conventional romance. It deals with some difficult issues. I’m hoping readers will think about what they might do in the same situation. There is romance in the story, but the main character has some very hard decisions to make along the way.

Describe characters in 5 words

Forgiving, kind, passionate, thoughtful, understanding

When you shape the events in the story  do You get into the character and decide the course of events or do You shape them in a pre-pondered architecture?

I do have events outlined, but I always ask myself what I might do or think or feel in a similar situation as the characters experience the events. I am a planner, not a pantser.

In all Your books You have put in a lot to develop the families of the protagonist as the support system. Can You please elaborate on it?

I believe that the family unit is the fabric of our society, and strong, healthy families and family relationships create a stronger society.  I believe it is imperative to strengthen our families and do our best to dedicate ourselves to our families by making members of our families feel important and loved and cherished.

Now a days very few authors integrate a strong message in their novels but you have inadvertently done so in almost all your books. When You write the book is Your focus more on the message or more on the story itself?

I try to focus on the story first and weave in a message second. I suppose I’m just so passionate about things that it comes out in my writing.  But a message is far more effective in a well-written story, so as a writer I need to always hone my skills and learn how to best create an engaging and intriguing story.

Is there anything that connects all your Books?

One of the recurring themes is the importance of family. Since I lost my parents at a young age, I have been very focused on my husband and children and making sure there is a strong bond within our family and I think that’s come out in my books.

How much of Your Personal Life and experience is reflected in your novels?

I think all authors write from their own frame of reference in how they have experienced life. My point of view is different from anyone else’s because no one else has lived my life. Having said that, I have included real-life experiences in my books, especially ones involving my kids.

So are You planning a book with a male Protagonist?

I don’t know. I don’t think I could write a male protagonist very well.

All writers are readers first! So who are your favourite authors and what are some of your all-time favourite books?

I loved “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli. I loved “The Hunger Games” and “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins.  I also loved “The Reluctant Bachelorette” by Rachael Anderson, “The Kindling” series by Braden Bell, and “Pocket Full of Posies” by Julie Coulter Bellon.  I really loved “On  Little Wings” by Regina Siriois.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series has been hailed as “one of the best” (Fiction Vixen). Now, Mercy must deal with an unwanted guest—one that brings a threat unlike anything she’s ever known.

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s stalker is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. ROSIE'S THOUGHTS -- 5 stars

Ms.Briggs has another winner although no surprise there! Mercy is
settling in as Adams wife although the pack is still not happy he took on
a coyote as a mate. Still feeling her way around and trying to be a
step-mom A problem arises when Christy ,Adams ex seeks sanctuary from a
stalker ex-boyfriend. Mercy has Adam bring Christy to their home but with
the pack disgruntled with Mercy and the fact they love Christy things get
sticky mighty quick. And there's that small problem of Christy wanting
Adam back! Throw into the mix that the Fae are after the Walking stick
and give her a time limit to get it or else. It's another situation of
who does she trust to watch her back that won't stab her in it!! During
all of this Mercy is also trying to solve a series of murders that point
to werewolves as the culprits. I always look forward to this series
coming out with a new book. Its a series that never grows old and boring
as you ride along with Mercy.

Bruce's Review MOON by TONY FLETCHER

Back in print, Moon is the brilliant and heralded biography of one of rock & roll's most notorious and beloved figures: The Who's legendary drummer Keith Moon.
Moon was the bad boy of rock & roll, the most manic member of an aggressive and fabulously successful band, a full-throttle hedonist who lived at the center of an unending party. He was also a musical genius who inspired whole generations of artists, a generous friend to nearly everyone who crossed his path, a guileless man of immense personal charm to whom the sweetest sound on earth was surf music. A generation after his death, Moon is still revered as the greatest drummer in rock history and the single wildest personality in an age of pop excess. Here is the truth behind the legend, the result of years of research in which music journalist Tony Fletcher interviewed dozens of Moon's friends, colleagues, and associates. An instant classic that brilliantly illuminates both the tender and self-destructive sides of this singular personality, Moon is the story of one of the most outrageous rock stars ever born.

From the Back Cover

The Who’s Keith Moon was the bad boy of rock & roll. Alongside Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle, Moon was the most manic member of an aggressive and fabulously successful band, a full-throttle hedonist who lived at the center of an unending party. He was also a musical genius who inspired whole generations of artists, a generous friend to nearly everyone who crossed his path, and a guileless man of immense personal charm to whom the sweetest sound on earth was surf music.

Decades after his death, Moon is still revered as the greatest drummer in rock history and the wildest personality in an age of pop excess. Venerated music journalist Tony Fletcher interviewed dozens of Moon’s friends, family, and peers—including John Entwistle, Ginger Baker, Jeff Beck, Ann-Margret, and Alice Cooper—to find the truth behind the legend. The result is one of the greatest rock biographies ever written. A brilliant portrait of both the tender and self-destructive sides of this singular personality.

About the Author
Tony Fletcher, who was born in Yorkshire, England, almost the exact week Keith Moon joined the band that would become the Who, still treasures the great drummer's autograph on a 1978 issue of the magazine Jamming!, which he started as a schoolboy in London. In the several lifetimes since, Fletcher has written books on R.E.M. and Echo and the bunnymen, contributed to magazines, newspapers, and television shows all over the world, and worked extensively as a DJ and A&R consultant. He now lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and young son.

SOURCE:  PUBLSIHER

Bruce's Thoughts:  3 stars

Tony Fletcher's MOON is an in depth look at The Who's late iconic drummer Keith Moon.
This book fills in all of the details that books on the Who omit about Keith's personal life and beginnings. It is a stark contrast to the recently released autobiography of Pete Townshend: "Who I Am " MOON comes in at just shy of 600 pages. If you really need to know about his wife's genealogy, this is the book for you. The author does reveal some information from first hand interviews that keep it interesting. The problem I had with the book is that it seems to really interpolate personal unknown feelings and opinions. Whole paragraphs seem to be devoted to peripheral incidents solely based on events which are hearsay. I waded through the fat in anticipation of real meat on the bone. No doubt about it. In my opinion, Keith Moon was one of the best drummers in rock. This was not really the best book about him. I would advise "Before I get Old" as the best book on the Who. 3 stars for effort The book could be better if it was seriously trimmed down.

Home Matters Updated

Home Matters by Julie N. Ford

According to her mother, Olivia Pembroke was born to be a star. But how is she supposed to be famous when she can't even get a decent acting gig? Her lucky break comes when she lands an audition for a wildly popular home improvement show. Even though she has no design training and has never even held a power tool, she refuses to let that stop her. She's confident that her destiny is finally within reach.

When her affections are torn between her heartthrob co-host and the irritating, yet somehow endearing lead contractor, does she continue to reach for the stars? Or does she design a new happily ever after? One that leads not to the fading lights of fame and fortune, but to a love that will burn forever.

Julie is a forty-something, dangerously close to becoming a fifty-something, graduate from San Diego State University with a BA in Political Science. Professionally, she has worked in teaching and as a marriage and family counselor. She is the author of four women’s fiction novels, including Count Down to Love, a 2011 Whitney Award finalist. Excerpt

Luckily, Atlanta was only a three-hour drive east from Nashville. Not so fortunate, however, was that it took another three hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic to get from one side of the city to the other. Olivia had left home before sunrise, hoping to arrive early in the day. People tended to be more optimistic, more open to new ideas, and more accepting of change first thing in the morning. Or so she’d heard on one of those early morning news shows. News? Well anyway, the kind of show where “newscasters” get paid an obscene amount of money to sit around and talk about themselves—ad nauseam—between information segments where an “expert” is forced to speed-talk through his/her spiel as to allow sufficient time for the extended commercial break to follow.
Except, now that she thought about it, if what the “expert” from the next segment had claimed was also correct, and most Americans were sleep deprived, how was it logical to assume any one individual might be more open and optimistic while still in the thawing-out phase that followed an insufficient night’s sleep? Only what did it matter when, technically, it wasn’t “the morning” anymore. Ugh! This was a disaster already. What had she been thinking? Then again, maybe that was her problem.

Maybe what she needed was to stop thinking and just breathe.

Mental Health Giveaway Hop Win HOW TO BE INTERESTING

Welcome to the

Mental Health Giveaway Hop

There are a bunch of blogs participating in this one so be sure to stop by each one. Each has their own entry rules and geographic limits, so be sure to read the rules for each one.  This hop starts March 20th and ends on March 27th,  midnight.

From WomensHealth.gov

Your mental health is very important. You will not have a healthy body if you don't also take care of your mind. People depend on you. It's important for you to take care of yourself so that you can do the important things in life — whether it's working, learning, taking care of your family, volunteering, enjoying the outdoors, or whatever is important to you.
Good mental health helps you enjoy life and cope with problems. It offers a feeling of well-being and inner strength. Just as you take care of your body by eating right and exercising, you can do things to protect your mental health. In fact, eating right and exercising can help maintain good mental health. You don't automatically have good mental health just because you don't have mental health illness. You have to work to keep your mind healthy.

HERE IS WHAT I HAVE FOR ONE LUCKY WINNER:

I so loved this little book.  It is easy to pick up and read a few pages when you need a mental pick me up!

How to Be Interesting: An Instruction Manual

You want to leave a mark, not a blemish. Be a hero, not a spectator. You want to be interesting. (Who doesn t?) But sometimes it takes a nudge, a wake-up call, an intervention! and a little help. This is where Jessica Hagy comes in. A writer and illustrator of great economy, charm, and insight, she s created How to Be Interesting, a uniquely inspirational how-to that combines fresh and pithy lessons with deceptively simple diagrams and charts.

Ms. Hagy started on Forbes.com, where she s a weekly blogger, by creating a How to Be Interesting post that went viral, attracting 1.4 million viewers so far, with tens of thousands of them liking, linking, and tweeting the article. Now she s deeply explored the ideas that resonated with so many readers to create this small and quirky book with a large and universal message. It s a book about exploring: Talk to strangers. About taking chances: Expose yourself to ridicule, to risk, to wild ideas. About being childlike, not childish: Remember how amazing the world was before you learned to be cynical. About being open: Never take in the welcome mat. About breaking routine:  Take daily vacations . . . if only for a few minutes. About taking ownership: Whatever you re doing, enjoy it, embrace it, master it as well as you can.
