Review FINGERPRINTS OF YOU by KRISTEN-PAIGE MADONIA @KPMadonia @SimonTeen

Book Description

August 7, 2012

A teen embarks on the road trip of a lifetime in this authentic, beautifully written debut novel.Lemon grew up with Stella, a single mom who wasn’t exactly maternal. Stella always had a drink in her hand and a new boyfriend every few months, and when things got out of hand, she would whisk Lemon off to a new town for a fresh beginning. Now, just as they are moving yet again, Lemon discovers that she is pregnant from a reckless encounter—with a guy Stella had been flirting with.
On the verge of revisiting her mother’s mistakes, Lemon struggles to cope with the idea of herself as a young unmarried mother, as well as the fact that she’s never met her own father. Determined to have at least one big adventure before she has the baby, Lemon sets off on a cross-country road trip, intending not only to meet her father, but to figure out who she wants to be.
Lyrical and moving prose from an original voice whose writing Judy Blume calls “luminous” deftly depicts the nuanced conflicts of early motherhood and the search for identity.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Lemon was born to her single mother when Stella was only seventeen. The two have been a team since her birth, always drifting from one town to another when her mother decided she had enough with where they were living or a bad breakup with a current boyfriend.  Her unusual name came about because of her mother's artistic inclinations and how she gets hooked on a new color each month. As Lemon drifts through life she decides that she needs to experience sex and her first encounter is with the local stoner boy at her last school.  She finds nothing life altering in the act and thinks maybe another encounter would make her "feel".  As Lemon picks possibly the worst choice, a 27 year old tattoo artist that she meets when Stella wants new ink, she becomes pregnant.

Lemon and Stella move to a new town in West Virginia for her senior year and there Lemon at least makes a friend, Emmy, who will support and encourage her.  For all of the hopelessness of Lemon's life, she never seems feel sorry for herself.  Instead, she always has a book in her hand and finds the good in small things.  She accepts responsibility for the pregnancy and tries to make realistic plans for her and the baby.  This baby makes her think about her own father and she wants to make peace with him and that part of her life before moving forward with her own.  Emmy and Lemon make plans to go to San Francisco on an adventure and Lemon has hope that she can find her father.

As Lemon pages through a maternity book from her mother, she finds a small note with her father's address and finds him once they arrive.  Staying at a dive, Lemon also makes contact with Aiden, a boy who cares for her and treats her how she should be treated.  The meeting with her father, Ryan, is a turning point for Lemon as she finds traits in herself that are directly from her father.  Her love of reading has always been a mystery to her, since her mother never cared much for books.  The moment when Lemon discovers books inscribed by her mother to her father is a turning point for her.

The growth in character and determination is just wonderful.  Her relationship with her mother turns into respect when Lemon realizes that her mother isn't as flighty as she first thought.  Emmy sticks by her and never faults her for getting pregnant.  Even when Emmy must cut the trip short because her father is wounded in the Afghanistan war, the pair support each other.  Lemon finding that she is indeed worthy of love and that her mother has always tried to do the best for her was a true revelation.  This is just such a beautifully written story that most teens will enjoy.  Parents:  there is some drinking, language and discussions of sexual situations, but nothing graphic.

BookHounds Review THE TINY BOOK OF TINY STORIES 2 @hitRECordJoe @ItBooks

Book Description

November 13, 2012 The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories (Book 2)

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Looper, 500 Days of Summer) made a big splash with The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories - so now he’s back with volume 2! One of the most ingenious and successful projects to come out of Gordon-Levitt's online creative coalition hitRECord - an international collaboration of artists and writers - The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 2 offers more quirky, delightfully small, ingeniously illustrated haiku-like tales, proving once more that the universe isn’t made of atoms; it’s made of tiny stories. The best things do come in small packages.

About the Author
HitRECord founder and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s acting career has managed to garner a massive popular appeal while maintaining a widely respected artistic integrity. He recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-nominated Inception and received Golden Globe, Independent Spirit and People’s Choice award nominations for his performance in (500) Days of Summer. Currently earning rave reviews for his performance in 50/50, also starring Seth Rogen, his upcoming films include David Koepp actioner Premium Rush and Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller Looper, with Bruce Willis. He is currently in production on The Dark Knight Rises, the third installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and will next begin work opposite Daniel Day Lewis in Steven Spielberg’s Abraham Lincoln biopic, Lincoln.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

The tiny book of tiny stories is just like the first although I thought it was a bit darker than the first installment.  Each page is a delight and each story will leave you pondering the thought behind each one for hours. There are some truly melancholy and some seriously silly little gems.   I think my favorite one is: "I'm tired of being tired of being tired of being."  Which just hit me at moment of sheer despair and when I turned the page a whole new emotion hit me.  This book will appeal to fans of Six Word Memoirs.  Fingers crossed the site will continue to explore these micro stories and more volumes will be published.

BookHounds Review THE SHADOW SOCIETY by MARIE RUTKOSKI @marierutkoski @MacKidsBooks @fsgbooks

Book Description

October 16, 2012

Darcy Jones doesn’t remember anything before the day she was abandoned as a child outside a Chicago firehouse. She has never really belonged anywhere—but she couldn’t have guessed that she comes from an alternate world where the Great Chicago Fire didn’t happen and deadly creatures called Shades terrorize the human population.

Memories begin to haunt Darcy when a new boy arrives at her high school, and he makes her feel both desire and desired in a way she hadn’t thought possible. But Conn’s interest in her is confusing. It doesn’t line up with the way he first looked at her.

As if she were his enemy.

When Conn betrays Darcy, she realizes that she can’t rely on anything—not herself, not the laws of nature, and certainly not him. Darcy decides to infiltrate the Shadow Society and uncover the Shades’ latest terrorist plot. What she finds out will change her world forever . . .

In this smart, compulsively readable novel, master storyteller Marie Rutkoski has crafted an utterly original world, characters you won’t soon forget, and a tale full of intrigue and suspense.

About the Author
Marie Rutkoski is the author of The Kronos Chronicles, including The Cabinet of WondersThe Celestial Globe, and The Jewel of the Kalderash. She is a professor at Brooklyn College, where she teaches Renaissance Drama, children’s literature, and creative writing. She lives in New York City.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Darcy doesn't understand why she seems different from other people.  Even though she is stuck in foster care when she was abandoned at a firehouse at the age of five, she has always been a bit peculiar.  Finally finding a stable home in her last year of high school, she meets a new boy in her English class, where they are paired together for a group project.  Her tight circle of friends don't like or trust the guy.  Conn has injected himself right into her life and just when she thinks she has found a boy to crush, he crushes her.  As she gets to know Conn, flashes of her life before she was abandon come into her mind.  When Conn arrests her for being a terrorist, she finds out the truth about her past.

As Darcy starts to figure out her past, she discovers that she is part of the Shades, a shadow society that is not human but a supernatural force with powers.  Although Conn has arrested her, he doesn't believe she is one of the Terrorists that caused a rift between the humans and Shades nor is she horribly evil as he been taught.  Forced to infiltrate the Shades as a spy for her life, she finds the Shades aren't as evil as Conn has made them out to be.  In turn, a Shade befriends her and Orion in turn makes her into a double agent.  When Darcy realizes that each society has there good and bad people, she tries to bring them together.

The story revolves around an alternate universe where the Chicago Fire was set to clear out the   Shades.  I really enjoyed the story and think it would be a wonderful read for younger teens. There is just enough suspense to be scary but not keep anyone from sleeping.  There are mentions of alcohol, some kissing and some violence.  I really hope that there is another installment for this world of Shades.

Also Part of the Series:

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they're told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they've taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.

Crossroads Excerpt:

He held me gently with both of his arms and wings this time.  All I needed was his touch, for him to hold me that way; it made all the difference in the world.  I was safe again.  Without thought, I turned toward him.  The look in his eyes was so tempting, telling me that he wanted me too.  I knew it was impossible for him to want and need me the same way, but his eyes told me something else. The depth of my yearning and what I wanted to do at this very moment was undeniable.
I leaned toward him and tenderly placed a kiss on his supple lips to thank him.  It was an innocent kiss.  What was the harm in just one small kiss?  I was extremely surprised that he didn’t push me away.  I was even more surprised at myself.  I was never the type to make the first move.
“Thank you for saving me,” I whispered, looking straight into his soulful eyes, as something came over me.  Uncontrollable heat ran through my body.  He was right.  It was dangerous, but it was me who couldn’t control myself.  His eyes gave me permission to continue, so I gave him another kiss, but slower and longer this time.  He kissed me back, but with much hesitation.  His lips were warm and sweet like honeysuckle, just how I imagined they would be.  The warmth spread all over my body like a blazing fire.
Still holding me, he pulled me away with a sudden jerk, his eyes piercing into mine with anger.  His left hand was tightly wrung around my hair and the other gripping my shirt so I could feel the tightness from it.  Panting, wanting more of him, I forgot how to breathe, and so did he.  His eyes, still fierce with anger, gripped me even tighter as he slightly pushed and pulled me, fighting and uncertain of what he wanted to do.  Feeling petrified, I had to prepare myself for the consequence of my actions, for I knew I had crossed the line.

Needing Claudia's soul to escape the only place Aliah can reside-a place between Heaven and Earth-he sends his demons in search of all Claudia Emersons on Earth. Taking her soul will enable him to be released from Between and cross over to Crossroads, which would give him immense power. As more secrets are revealed Claudia learns about the venators--nephilim, demon hunters. BookHounds Review SEVER by LAUREN DeSTEFANO @SimonTeen @LaurenDeStefano

Book Description

February 12, 2013 Chemical Garden (Book 3)

Time is running out for Rhine in this conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Chemical Garden Trilogy.

With the clock ticking until the virus takes its toll, Rhine is desperate for answers. After enduring Vaughn’s worst, Rhine finds an unlikely ally in his brother, an eccentric inventor named Reed. She takes refuge in his dilapidated house, though the people she left behind refuse to stay in the past. While Gabriel haunts Rhine’s memories, Cecily is determined to be at Rhine’s side, even if Linden’s feelings are still caught between them.

Meanwhile, Rowan’s growing involvement in an underground resistance compels Rhine to reach him before he does something that cannot be undone. But what she discovers along the way has alarming implications for her future—and about the past her parents never had the chance to explain.

In this breathtaking conclusion to Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy, everything Rhine knows to be true will be irrevocably shattered.

MY THOUGHTS
OMIGOSH -- PERFECT CONCLUSION

I tried to keep this spoiler free....

Ok, let's talk about that cover.  There are a thousand words in that cover.  There are so many details that make sense once you finish this book. Since those details are in view, I am going to talk about those rather than how this series ends.  First off, the apples in the lower part of the image:  Rhine finds that she can only eat in her new location at Reed's home.  Reed is Linden's uncle and the complete opposite of Vaughn.  He is a mad inventor living off the grid and remembers the way the world used to be before the virus.  In Reed, Rhine find some comfort and he helps her even more than she realizes.

Cecily and Linden join her with their son, Bowden there.  There are lots of secrets that Reed knows about Vaughn and gives hints to the group.  Then there is Rhine holding her ring.  Yep, she finally has the nerve to ask Linden to remove it, thereby annulling her marriage to him.  While she is relieved by this action, at times, she misses the closeness that she shared with him.  She also knows that this action will comfort Cecily and in turn makes Cecily a stronger person.   Rhine is not perfect and she knows it, everything she thinks is right turns out to be wrong but she still knows what is good and true to her.

THAT is the story of life. There are so many gray areas that occurs in day to day life that you can't possibly imagine that something your parents do will have consequences beyond their lives that will impact your own life.  You hope that they choose wisely and if not you grow up to overcome their choices if you feel that they are wrong.  So the story ends, but not without Rhine questioning all of her choices, regretting some, rejoicing in others.  One hint: she does reunite with her brother, which I am still trying to figure out where he stands.  Hmm, maybe I need a story with Rowan's point of view?  Parents: I don't remember any steamy scenes or a lot of violence in this one.  This is just a fitting conclusion to the story.

BookHounds Review SLEEPING WITH THE BEAST by DALE RYAN

Book Description

June 1, 2012

Sleeping With the Beast is not just another pretty book filled with pictures of dogs and owners romping in the fields. It is about a New England family that just happens to be comprised of a couple with two sons... five dogs--all cohabitating in one large farmhouse. In Sleeping With the Beast, Dale Ryan invites us into her home for a close-up view of what it's like to live with dogs--from cooking to decorating to gardening to literally sleeping with the beast.

Sleeping With the Beast is a rather intimate book about dogs and their human partners. Furthermore, the book touches on legal, moral, and philosophical issues that confront our diversified families. The author also describes how dogs should be regarded not as 21st century accessories but should be respected for their multi-dimensional character. The term "beast" is used here in the most affectionate way. While the dictionary describes a beast as an animal other than a human, in a sense we are all beasts, whether two or four-legged. Humans have been domesticated and dogs have been as well, but rules are often broken. Gorgeously illustrated with four-color photographs of Dale and her family--especially the dogs.

About the Author
Dale Ryan has studied art and design and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education. She has been working on projects ranging from dog shelters, schools, and sustainable, local foods for hospitals. Dale lives in Connecticut with her family.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Photographer Dale Ryan has captured the joy of living and sleeping with her wonderful dogs.  Her lovely home is packed with all sorts of amazing objects that are displayed with such care that it looks like a page ripped out of Home Beautiful. .  This is a gorgeous book that should be left out on your coffee table for all to enjoy.  I am so jealous of the author's garden and dogs! I love that she allows her dogs to roam free throughout the place.  They are part of her family and it shows.  I do wonder how she can get any rest with those three big Shar Peis in bed with her.  I would love to kick the dachshund out of my bed, but she is just too smart and can sneak back in  whenever she likes.

Ryan used complimentary colors that hid all the pet hair, something I didn't think about when I tried to do my own home in creams and whites.  That just didn't work out with two black dogs.  I have since adjusted to more autumn colors, much as Ryan has used in her own home, and now have a dog that blends in so well with the furniture that she is hard to find at times.  She makes things as pet friendly as possible for her dogs.  There are lots of little tips to help make your home and garden as pet friendly as possible.  I am going to treasure this book!
