Waiting on Wednesday: Rock On by Denise Vega @lbkids

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Book Description

March 5, 2012
Ori Taylor is the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the Band To Be Named Later, a garage band he started with his friends. After years of being known only as the kid brother of sports star Del, Ori is looking forward to stepping out of his older brother's shadow, learning to perform in public, and rocking the Battle of the Bands contest. Oh, and maybe finally working up the nerve to talk to a girl in person instead of just over e-mail. But when Del suddenly returns from college, he expects Ori to step back into his role of little brother, just when Ori is starting to come into his own.

With his confidence wavering, will Ori be able to overcome his stage fright and lead the band to rock glory? Will the Band To Be Named Later ever get a real name? Will their best performances remain in the garage?

Denise Vega's deft exploration of brothers, bands, friends, and crushes promises to have readers tuning in page after page, because among all the ups and downs of being a teen, one thing's for sure: We all just want to rock on.

From the Inside Flap

Introducing ORI TAYLOR and THE BAND TO BE NAMED LATER!

You say you've never heard of them? Just wait. TBTBNL is sure to hit it big at this year's Battle of the Bands, and you'll want to say you knew them when. . . . Front man Ori Taylor is looking forward to stepping out of his older brother's shadow, learning to perform in public, and rocking the Battle. Oh, and maybe finally working up the nerve to talk to a girl in person instead of just over e-mail. After all, who doesn't love a lead singer?

But when older brother Del suddenly returns from college, he expects Ori to step back into his role of little brother, just when Ori is starting to come into his own. With his confidence wavering, will Ori be able to overcome his stage fright and lead the band to rock glory? Will the Band To Be Named Later ever get a real name? Will their best performances remain in the garage?

Denise Vega's deft exploration of brothers, bands, friends, and crushes promises to have readers tuning in page after page, because among all the ups and downs of being a teen, one thing's for sure:

It's Hard to Rock Out in High School.

From the Back Cover

DON'T MISS ORI TAYLOR
AND THE BAND TO BE NAMED LATER
IN THEIR FIRST-EVER PUBLIC SHOW!
COMING SOON TO THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS!

I stroke my sleek Les Paul, then slam into a killer riff that sends every girl in the front row screaming for a piece of me. I look out on the crowd, my voice hitting all the notes. I-- "Ori?" --look back at my best friend and drummer, Nick "Call Me the Brew Man" Brewster, and-- "Ori. Dude. You've got to come out now. We're going on soon." I blinked once. Twice. The stage dissolved. I wasn't a rock star. I was a sixteen-year-old dork at the FX Lounge for Mic Night Monday. And I was hiding in the bathroom.

Book Description
Publication Date: February 1, 2012
Dear Reader,
Gracious me, my beautiful daughter Rocky sure could use my help. I always knew she wasn't much interested in the local boys - but who'd have thought she'd come home with English royalty?
Trouble is, Hugh wants to buy some of our folks' land. We don't want to sell, but Rocky's job depends on her closing the deal. And though Hugh's obviously smitten, I'm not sure he's right for my Rocky. Oh, he's classy and handsome - and you should've seen the way he judged pies and fixed stock cars at our Watermelon Festival! - but what do we know about him, really? I know I sound like a nervous mother hen, but after forty happy years with my Elbert, all I want is to see my little girl find the same.
Well, time for me to quit chattering and get back to Miss Bray's wet set. Always nice talking to you, and remember: the Cut 'n Curl's got hot rollers, free coffee, and the best gossip in town.
See you real soon,
Ruby Rhodes

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

The title of this book is a bit misleading since it covers more than just blood sugar.  Once you get through the introduction and history of *diabesity* which runs about 70 pages, the information about eating and exercise are pretty spot on.  My last two blood tests showed that my glucose levels were elevated and I needed to do something to avoid my own family history of diabetes.  I am not overweight but I really wasn't eating properly.  The book goes into detail about which foods actually reduce your blood sugar and relieve other problems like inflammation, head aches and fatigue.  Even if you don't have issues with blood sugar, this book has great information just about living healthy.

So far, I have reduced my sugar count just by eating better food and exercise, so there really isn't much magic as far as accomplishing that.  This book provides an excellent guide if you don't have access or the means to have clinical support in getting healthy.  The plan is really simple and most of the foods are readily available.  There is a handy recipe guide in the back with an index to help you find them easily.  I can't tell you how many books like this don't include that simple thing.  One thing I haven't read in a book like this is about chemical sweeteners, which it turns out can be pretty evil.  I still crave my one diet soda a day, but maybe in the future I can start replacing it with a healthier drink like green tea. Overall, this is a great book to get started with if you want to change your life and make a committment to healthier living.

RIP Judi McCoy author of The Dog Walker series

About this author

 (from Goodreads)
Judi and her husband Dennis live in the peace and solitude of Virginia’s beautiful eastern shore. Retired from her career as a nationally rated women’s gymnastic judge, she now writes and promotes her dog walker series full time, teaching aspiring authors and speaking at conferences around the country.

Judi passed away on February 19 from complications of Diabetes.  I adored her Dog Walker cozies and had planned an event during my Dog Days of Summer.  I had emailed with Judi several times and she was just so charming!   This is just such sad news.   She was a great champion of dogs everywhere!

Book Description

 April 24, 2012
An ancient evil is unleashed in the modern world— unless one fearless P.I. can hunt it down. . . . Nikki Glass, Immortal Huntress, returns in this new novel in the acclaimed series by Jenna Black. As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down. But when an Oracle shows up, warning the Descendants about wild dog attacks in Washington, D.C., Nikki is afraid it might be a trap. The Olympians believe the “dogs” are really jackals, controlled by a blood-crazed descendant of the Egyptian death-god Anubis. Whatever. . . . If Nikki hopes to muzzle Dogboy, she’s got to catch him in the act. But when she stakes out a local cemetery, she ends up face-to-snout with a snarling pack of shadow-jackals whose bite is worse than their bark. These hellhounds are deadly—even for an immortal like Nikki. “Dog” spelled backward may be “god,” but that won’t stop Nikki from teaching these old gods some new tricks. Like playing dead.

REVIEW: Wild Thing by Josh Bazell @littlebrown

 Description

It's hard to find work as a doctor when using your real name will get you killed. So hard that when a reclusive billionaire offers Dr. Peter Brown, aka Pietro Brnwa, a job accompanying a sexy but self-destructive paleontologist on the world's worst field assignment, Brown has no real choice but to say yes. Even if it means that an army of murderers, mobsters, and international drug dealers-not to mention the occasional lake monster-are about to have a serious Pietro Brnwa problem.

Facing new and old monsters alike, Dr. Brnwa's story continues in this darkly funny and lightning-paced follow up to Josh Bazell's bestselling debut.

About the Author

Josh Bazell is the author of the national bestseller Beat the Reaper and holds a BA in writing from Brown University and an MD from Columbia. He lives in New York.

Details

  • Hardcover: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Reagan Arthur Books; 1 edition (February 8, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0316032190
  • ISBN-13: 978-0316032193

SOURCE: PUBLISHER

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

The protagonist of Beat the Reaper is back but there is little else in common with the first book, except that Pietro Brnwa is back with a new name, Lionel Azimuth.  As part of a witness protection program, he is now a cruise ship doctor which is a pretty horrifying condition to hear him tell. He is still in hiding from the mafia but now a reclusive billionaire (known as Rec Bill in the book), has hired him to accompany his staff paleontologist in search of a Loch Ness type monster.  Pietro - Peter- Lionel travels to remote Minnesota with Violet on the trip of a lifetime, which could easily end there.

So when the two of them head off to a lake to search for a reported monster creature, the characters there are just as frightening as any monster.  A group of Vietnam vets make up the leaders of the expedition. I hadn't realize how pervasive methamphetimines are until you read how the whole town's economy is based on the drug.  If you know the story behind Nessie and the town that invented the serpent, you have a good inkling about the plot.  Oh, and throw in Palin as a character, and you have the political send up of the year.  There is a lot of cussing, violence and sex, so beware.  I don't think the whole thing could come together without those elements though.

I adore completely bizarre stories and this one is above and beyond normal  If you read the Dexter series, you have an inkling of what Peter is all about.  He kills and he can save lives and his quick wit and intelligence is shown through out the book.  The footnotes alone are worth the price of admission.  Much like, Lisa Lutz and her Spellman series, there is a wackiness that pervades especially in the use of footnotes.  The appendix quite honestly frighted me with the global warning dire predictions but mostly because he speaks the truth.  If you enjoy Elmore Leonard, Jeff Lindsay, Christopher Moore, Lisa Lutz, then you will love this one as well since it pretty much is a mix of these authors.

REVIEW: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi @harperteen

 Description

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse. Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive. A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria’s help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky. MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Aria lives in a post apocalyptic world where the Earth has become so damaged with some sort of solar flare activity (at least this is how I understood the storms) called the Aether which causes the landscape to catch on fire and become charged with electricity. There are two main factions that inhabit the planet.  Those who live in inside enclosed pods that protect the inhabitants from the storms and those who live outside in the elements.  These outsiders have developed skills and evolved super senses to help exist in a mostly ruined climate.  Those that live in safety have done so at a price since the genetics that make humans able to adapt has been bred out.   The pods, for all their relative safety from the storms have become breeding grounds for psychological breaks.  Her mother, a geneticist, sees this coming and tries to protect her and in some ways she does.

Aria finds herself at odds with the leader's son when he breaks and kills. She is essentially sentenced to death, but escapes and by luck or design, she is rescued by outsider, Perry, who saved her once in the pod.  They are from extremely different worlds, so you have the whole Romeo and Juliet thing going on.  The world building is entirely believable and it is so easy to slip into.  The story is told in alternating chapters from each of their point of view which works nicely for this book.

This is one of those books that doesn't catch your attention right away, so for the few chapters, I thought, oh, just another sci fi story for teens, then I become totally wrapped up in the world.  Aria has become one of my favorite female leads.  She starts out weak and then grows immensely taking everything in as she learns to cope with her whole world turned upside down.  Perry also grows into a new role as he finds he can almost trust her which for him is groundbreaking since his history has been one of incredible loss.   Now, I can't wait until the next in the series.

REVIEW: Damned by Chuck Palahniuk @doubledaypub (and a chance for some damned stickers!)

Book Description

October 18, 2011
Think adolescence is hell? You have no idea... Welcome to Dante's Inferno, by way of The Breakfast Club, from the mind of American fiction's most brilliant troublemaker.

"Death, like life, is what you make out of it." So says Madison, the whip-tongued 11-year-old narrator of Damned, Chuck Palahniuk's subversive homage to the young adult genre. Madison is abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas while her parents are off touting their new film projects and adopting more orphans. Over the holidays she dies of a marijuana overdose--and the next thing she knows, she's in Hell.

This is the afterlife as only Chuck Palahniuk could imagine it: a twisted inferno inspired by both the most extreme and mundane of human evils, where The English Patient plays on repeat and roaming demons devour sinners limb by limb. However, underneath Madison's sad teenager affect there is still a child struggling to accept not only the events of her dysfunctional life, but also the truth about her death.

For Madison, though, a more immediate source of comfort lies in the motley crew of young sinners she meets during her first days in Hell. With the help of Archer, Babette, Leonard, and Patterson, she learns to navigate Hell--and discovers that she'd rather be mortal and deluded and stupid with those she loves than perfect and alone.

About the Author

CHUCK PALAHNIUK's eleven novels are the bestselling Tell-All, Pygmy, Snuff, Rant, Haunted, Lullaby, and Fight Club, which was made into a movie by David Fincher, Diary, Survivor, Invisible Monsters, and Choke (also made into a film). He is also the author of the nonfiction profile of Portland, Fugitives and Refugees, published as part of the Crown Journey Series, and the nonfiction collection Stranger Than Fiction. He lives in the Pacific Northwest.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

So, if Christopher Moore (think Abby Normal from Bite Me)  and Judy Blume got together and wrote a book dedicated to a life lived in hell as a sort of CandyLand game with all of the twists and turns that move a player forward; where candy is currency .  Each chapter starts with a note from Madison, the eleven year old protagonist address to Satan.  As she accepts her death and now after life, she finds that even small infractions are enough to send you to the underworld. Honk your car horn?  You get 700, once you surpass that magic number, kiss heaven good bye.   Same thing for being rude, an idiot and not picking up your trash.  As far as Madison can figure out, she ended up in hell because she smoke pot.  There is more to the story than that, but you have to read this one to the bitter end to find out exactly how she died.

The writing is so superb that I can't even describe the pleasure of each word and the placement.  Most writers have one or two quotable lines, but this whole book is entirely quotable.  I have read most of the author's work and this totally redeemed him in my eyes for Pygmy.  I had a hard time reading that one.  In no way is this book suitable for younger teens but more adventurous ones should really enjoy this.  It takes young adult paranormal drama to the next level.   Hell is also the location of telemarketers.  Madison rules hell as she convinces people to give up their eternity for hell and become the top recruiter on her way to world domination.  She does get her chance for salvation, but instead decides she is more suited to a life as a ruler.
