Book Give-Away May 31 – June 7: Interview with Historical Fiction Author Shauna S. Roberts and book give away! At the dawn of civilization, one woman must risk her life and her reputation to save her family and society itself from destruction. Like Mayflies in the Stream is an adventure story that takes place at the dawn of history in the world’s first city, Uruk. It’s a precarious time, when civilization is still an unproven experiment that could be destroyed at any time by flood, famine, attacks by wandering bands . . . or a tyrant who abuses his citizens. And the Heart Says Whatever by Emily Gould (Book Review 2010-90)

Product Description

Essays by former editor of Gawker.com—and the new female voice of her generation.  In And the Heart Says Whatever, Emily Gould tells the truth about becoming an adult in New York City in the first decade of the twenty-first century, alongside bartenders, bounty hunters, bloggers, bohemians, socialites, and bankers. These are essays about failing at pet parenthood, suspending lust during the long moment in which a dude selects the perfect soundtrack from his iTunes library, and leaving one life behind to begin a new one (but still taking the G train back to visit the old one sometimes).   For everyone who has ever had a job she wishes she didn't, felt inchoate ambition sour into resentment, ended a relationship, regretted a decision, or told a secret to exactly the wrong person, these stories will be achingly familiar.   At once a road map of what not to do and a document of what's possible, this book heralds the arrival of a writer who decodes the new challenges of our post-private lives, and the age-old intricacies of the human heart.

About the Author

Emily Gould is the former co-editor of Gawker.com, along with co-editor Alex Balk, managing editor Choire Sicha, and associate editor Doree Shafrir. She grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and attended college for two years at Kenyon College before transferring to Eugene Lang College in New York City.
Gould resides in Brooklyn, New York. She began her blogging career as one-half of The Universal Review before starting her own blog, Emily Magazine, and writing for Gawker on a freelance basis as the anonymous author of the Unsolicited column. She eventually replaced Jessica Coen at Gawker upon Coen's departure for Vanity Fair in September 2006. Before joining the Gawker staff, she was an associate editor at Disney's Hyperion imprint.
Gould, with Zareen Jaffery, is the co-author of the young adult novel Hex Education, which was released by Penguin's Razorbill imprint in May 2007.
On November 30, 2007 Gould resigned from Gawker.

LOVED IT

I will never be a writer.  I don't have the ability to expose myself the way Emily Gould has in this series of essays about her life and the publishing world.  I had heard of Gawker.com but never actually read anything there unless it was forwarded to me and in a way, I am really glad I didn't know anything about Emily Gould's writing or life.  This short book of essays really exemplifies the state of the single in NYC and how difficult it is to grow up these days.  I think everyone has had a job that they hate or makes them stressful and Gould does a great job bringing those emotions and the effect they can have on your general like.  I hope that she has found some peace.

Why Dogs Eat Poop by Francesca Gould and David Haviland (Book Review 2010-89)

Product Description

A third installment in the delightfully disgusting miscellany series that began with the national bestseller, Why You Shouldn't Eat Your Boogers and Other Useless or Gross Information About Your Body.

In the New York Times (extended list) bestseller Why You Shouldn't Eat Your Boogers and Other Useless or Gross Information About Your Body, Francesca Gould uncovered everything you'd want to know-and a few things you'd rather you didn't-about the human body. In Why Fish Fart and Other Useless or Gross Information About the World, she scoured planet Earth for a rich assortment of odd and/or unsavory facts. In Why Dogs Eat Poop and Other Useless or Gross Information About the Animal Kingdom, Francesca Gould and David Haviland explore a subject positively rife with gross miscellany: the animal kingdom.

Indeed, animals do the darnedest things and, in this vastly entertaining book, Gould and Haviland uncover a universe of strange, hilarious, and quite often disgusting animal habits, ailments, and practices, including:

-Monkey-Faced Lamb disease;
-farting snakes;
-dino-chickens;
-and a creature you've never heard of that eats with its eyes.

Why Dogs Eat Poop is sure to delight any fan of the obscure and/ or grotesque.

LOVED IT

Books of this type are among my most favorite!  I can watch Animal Planet for hours and read trivia books to no end, so this brings together my two favorite things:  trivia and fact about animals.   This would make a great gift for animal lovers who like that "ewww-- gross" learning experience.  Unfortunately, there is no firm answer on why dogs eat poop, but there many theories though in the section on this question.

What Would Satan Do by Pat Byrnes (Book Review 2010-88)

Product Description

Whether you are an eternal equivocator or simply a person whose moral compass blows with the ethical wind, cartoonist Pat Byrnes delivers a delightfully depraved new cartoon book. A devilish play on the over-asked (if you ask us) "What Would Jesus Do?" question, this hilarious and edgy book delivers a host of witty cartoons on ethics in today's society.

The author himself would be the first to say we all like to think we know right from wrong, but in the heat of real-world moral decisions, things often arise to cloud our minds. From a doctor peeking into a patient's room to remark, "85 dollars just to poke my head through the door! Doesn't that make you sick?" to a minister telling his congregation, "I won't be giving a sermon today because you're all going to hell anyway," Byrnes's offbeat humor will delight anyone who has ever considered leaving a few (or all) of their morals behind. Byrnes offers guidance, too, to those still struggling with good and evil: "If you know what would absolutely be wrong, then you know that you absolutely should search in the other direction."

About the Author

Pat Byrnes tried his hand as a design engineer, stand-up comic, advertising copywriter, and voice-over actor before turning to cartooning in 1998. His cartoons have been published in The New Yorker, Reader's Digest, America Magazine, USA Weekend, Ms., Catholic Digest, Barron's, The Wall Street Journal, Better Homes & Gardens, and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. His work has been featured in several anthologies, including The New Yorker Book of Kids Cartoons, The New Yorker Book of Golf Cartoons, and The New Yorker 75th Anniversary Cartoon Collection. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the National Cartoonists Society. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Lisa.

This is a very funny comic book and don't be turned off by title.  It is really not all about Satan, but more of an expose' on the moral status of the country.  Quick and dirty!

The Rock Snob's Dictionary by David Kamp and Steven Daly (Book Review 2010-87)

    Product Description

At last! An A-to-Z reference guide for readers who want to learn the cryptic language of Rock Snobs, those arcana-obsessed people who speak of "Rickenbacker guitars" and "Gram Parsons."

We've all been there--trapped in a conversation with smarty-pants music fiends who natter on about "the MC5" or "Eno" or "the Hammond B3," not wanting to let on that we haven't the slightest idea what they're talking about. Well, fret no more! The Rock Snob's Dictionary is here to define every single sacred totem of rock fandom's know-it-all fraternity, from Alt.country to Zimmy. (That's what Rock Snobs call Bob Dylan, by the way.)

    LOVE IT

I have to say that I actually use this book as a cheat sheet.  This is all stuff that I should know but there is not enough room in my brain.  Some of the information is pretty common knowledge but there are some gems in here.  I do kind of wish there was an index though.

My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster (Book Review 2010-86)

    Product Description

It's a JENaissance! The New York Times bestselling author of Pretty in Plaid gets her culture on.

Readers have followed Jen Lancaster through job loss, sucky city living, weight loss attempts, and 1980s nostalgia. Now Jen chronicles her efforts to achieve cultural enlightenment, with some hilarious missteps and genuine moments of inspiration along the way. And she does so by any means necessary: reading canonical literature, viewing classic films, attending the opera, researching artisan cheeses, and even enrolling in etiquette classes to improve her social graces.

In Jen's corner is a crack team of experts, including Page Six socialites, gourmet chefs, an opera aficionado, and a master sommelier. She may discover that well-regarded, high-priced stinky cheese tastes exactly as bad as it smells, and that her love for Kraft American Singles is forever. But one thing's for certain: Eliza Doolittle's got nothing on Jen Lancaster-and failure is an option.

    About the Author

Jen Lancaster is the New York Times bestselling author of four books.

    ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

I think Jen is losing her edge and I mean that in a good way.  She is now a female version of A. J. Jacobs on her quest to find the answers to life's questions.  This book shows the importance of how an education is never complete.  I have to admit I am not a huge reality television fan, but I now have to watch some of her favorite shows just to keep up with her blog.  One disappointment with this book is -- NO PICTURES.  I thought that those sly photos on her blog just make the stories that much more effective.  And yes, I know a book is nothing like a blog, but I have to get my fix of Jen in at least a monthly dose or I become depressed.  If you enjoy sarcasm, this is the book for you, all other steer clear.

Angels, Vampires and Douche Bags by Carla Collins (Book Review 2010-85)

    Product Description

In this candid confessional, comedian Carla Collins divides the world into the angels who guide us, inspire us, and save our butts; the sexy and trendy vampires who suck the life out of us; and the douche bags who constantly annoy, disgust and taunt us. With a fast wit, fake breasts and real heart, Collins shares her unconventional journey from a small steel town in Ontario, Canada to Tinseltown L.A. On this wild and revealing romp, she navigates her way through seventy-two imaginary friends, multiple fiancés, eight dogs, two marriages, and one topless grandmother. Her hard-earned life lessons will show you that by taking risks, embracing humiliation and tapping into the power of laughter, anything is possible--and everyone is manageable. Attract more angels into your life, control your vampires, and keep all the douchebags at bay. Angels, Vampires and Douche Bags is original, edgy, uplifting and laugh-out-loud funny.

    LOVED IT

This is a super funny "self-help"/autobiography and I laughed almost the whole time I read this.  The author classifies people into three categories of angels, vampires and douche bags which is pretty self explanatory.  I think Collins really shines when she interweaves her personal history with these categories and the lessons from each type.  I was going to pick my favorite line, but there are just too many good one liners to list them all.  I would have to copy the whole book.

The humor is just fabulous and I would love to see the author perform her stand up routine.  I did find a few clips on you tube which are easy to locate.  There are some adult moments there, so I don't feel comfortable posting them in this forum.  You need to buy several copies of this book since if you leave it out, it will disappear the next time a friend picks it up.

Oh, and she rescues dogs...how much better can it get?

    LIKED IT

This book is directed at young adults, but to me it is really more of an adult book, or the teen needs to be really mature to read this.  The story goes back in time to Carrie Bradshaw's roots back in the 70's.  I guess her behavior was pretty typical during that era with lots of alcohol, random sex and some drugs.  I supposed the sound track of the book is the rock and roll part.  The descriptions of Carrie's wardrobe are spectacular.  I just thought the story was a little bit drawn out and very introspective.  I dunno -- I am a huge fan of Bushnell's writing but never got into the TV show, so maybe this book isn't directed at me.

You need to know about this book: And the Heart Says Whatever By Emily Gould

    Just a quicky note here:

I don't know how I ended up with this book. It just showed up in the mail the other day and it fit right in my purse, so I threw it in.  I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and pulled it out to read while waiting.  I was so enchanted by it, I wanted the doctor to be late.  No such luck though....I will have a full report on this as soon as I am done.

I love memoir and personal essays, so this quirky book is right up my alley.

BLOG TOUR: The Devlin Diary by Christi Phillips (Book Review 2010-83)

    Product Description

From the acclaimed author of The Rossetti Letter comes a dazzling novel of intrigue, passion, and royal secrets that shifts tantalizingly between Restoration-era London and present-day Cambridge.
London, 1672. The past twelve years have brought momentous changes: the restoration of the monarchy, a devastating plague and fire. Yet the city remains a teeming, thriving metropolis, energized by the lusty decadence of Charles II's court and burgeoning scientific inquiry. Although women enjoy greater freedom, they are not allowed to practice medicine, a restriction that physician Hannah Devlin evades by treating patients that most other doctors shun: the city's poor.
But Hannah has a special knowledge that Secretary of State Lord Arlington desperately needs. At the king's Machiavellian court, Hannah attracts the attention of two men, charming courtier Ralph Montagu and anatomist Dr. Edward Strathern, as well as the attention of the powerful College of Physicians, which views her work as criminal. When two influential courtiers are found brutally murdered, their bodies inscribed with arcane symbols, Hannah is drawn into a dangerous investigation by Dr. Strathern, who believes the murders conceal a far-reaching conspiracy that may include Hannah's late father and the king himself.
Cambridge, 2008. Teaching history at Trinity College is Claire Donovan's dream come true -- until one of her colleagues is found dead on the banks of the River Cam. The only key to the professor's unsolved murder is a seventeenthcentury diary kept by his last research subject, Hannah Devlin, physician to the king's mistress. With help from the eclectic collections of Cambridge's renowned libraries, Claire and historian Andrew Kent follow the clues Devlin left behind, uncovering secrets of London's dark past and Cambridge's equally murky present, and discovering that events of three hundred years ago may still have consequences today....
A suspenseful and richly satisfying tale brimming with sharply observed historical detail, The Devlin Diary brings past and present to vivid life. With wit and grace, Christi Phillips holds readers spellbound with an extraordinary novel of secrets, obsession, and the haunting power of the past.

    LOVED IT

Historical Fiction is one of my favorites and especially when it is well done.  This story leaves you wanting the next book from Christie Phillips as soon as possible.  The story deftly switches back and forth between modern times and the 17th century with quite a bit of suspense.  This will have you turning the pages and staying up well past your bedtime.  There is rich historical detail and wonderful dialogue.  Hannah and Claire both provide strong female characters.  There is a surprise ending, but I am not going to spill it!  If you love Philippa Gregory and Heather Terrell, you will love this one.

Lab run over and shot is making a recovery!

I don't know how anyone could do this to a dog!  At least the pup is making a recovery.

WBIR.com | Knoxville, TN | Washington County dog finds support in Knoxville

A dog from Northeast Tennessee is winning the hearts of thousands as he recovers at the University of Tennessee Veterinary School.
Riley, a yellow lab pup, came to Knoxville in April after being run over by a car in Washington county. As doctors worked to repair a broken leg, fractured spine, and open head wound, they discovered he had also been shot.
Despite the injuries, Riley is making a remarkable recovery.
"He underwent a lot of trauma and a lot of surgeries but has just really rallied and been a testament to how resilient and tough dogs can be," said Dr. Marti Drum who oversees Riley's therapy.
Deborah Yokely, a volunteer with the national group Labs4Rescue, brought Riley to UT from Washington County. She and her daughters visit the pup daily and now take him home on weekends to continue therapy.
"He loves everybody, there's not a stranger. He wants to be the center of attention. He's very playful," Yokely said. "He's progressed every day."
Riley's daily routine includes ten minutes on an underwater treadmill. With a helping hand, he is re-learning how to walk. One of the hardest parts is holding him back to prevent further injury.
"Psychologically, he's totally recovered. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with him. He wants to go, he wants to play, he wants to do everything a lab puppy would do. But his body is not quite there yet," Drum said.
Riley has a tremendous support group monitoring his recovery. More than 3,000 people have joined a support page on Facebook.
"This little dog is a trooper. He's fought from day one," said Yokely. "It couldn't be possible without everybody's support. All of the community and everyone at UT."
Labs4Rescue is paying for Riley's medical bills. The group is accepting donations to help cover the remaining cost of surgery and rehabilitation.
Depending on his progress, Riley could be released in several weeks to a month. He still needs a permanent home. Interested parties can contact the rescue group.
The Washington County Animal Control office continues to investigate the case; however, several leads have resulted in dead ends. A witness told rescue workers the vehicle that hit Riley was a gray Chevy S-10.
Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities at 423-926-8769.

GIVEAWAY! The War Lovers by Evan Thomas (AUDIO BOOK)

    Product Description

On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine exploded in the Havana Harbor. Although there was no evidence that the Spanish were responsible, yellow newspapers such as William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal whipped Americans into frenzy by claiming that Spain's "secret infernal machine" had destroyed the battleship. Soon after, the blandly handsome and easily influenced President McKinley declared war, sending troops not only to Cuba but also to the Philippines, Spain's sprawling colony on the other side of the world.

As Evan Thomas reveals in his rip-roaring history of those times, the hunger for war had begun years earlier. Depressed by the "closing" of the Western frontier and embracing theories of social Darwinism, a group of warmongers that included a young Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge agitated loudly and incessantly that the United States exert its influence across the seas. These hawks would transform American foreign policy and, when Teddy ascended to the presidency, commence with a devastating war without reason, concocted within the White House--a bloody conflict that would come at tremendous cost.

Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, THE WAR LOVERS is the story of six men at the center of a transforming event in U.S. history: Roosevelt, Lodge, Hearst, McKinley, William James, and Thomas Reed, and confirms once more than Evan Thomas is a popular historian of the first rank.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Starlet by Mary McNamara

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

    This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

    Product Description

It’s a not-so-well-respected rule in Hollywood that what happens on location stays on location. But when a hot young leading man winds up dead in his Rome hotel room, his costar’s life is about to go off the rails in a very public way—even by celeb standards. At the tender age of twenty-three, Mercy Talbot has won an Oscar, battled addiction, wrecked more than her share of cars, and burned down her house. Her look-alike mother keeps her on a tight leash (and fueled with an endless supply of OxyContin and cocaine) and her producers demand a grueling schedule. By the time she stumbles across Juliette Greyson, a Hollywood insider on a much-needed vacation, Mercy is surrounded by photographers and about to emerge drunk, high, and naked from a public fountain. Whisking her away to an idyllic Tuscan ‘retreat,’ Juliette is about to discover another rule of Hollywood: wherever the starlet may go, the drama will follow.

    About the Author

Mary McNamara has worked for the Los Angeles Times for seventeen years, writing extensively about the inner workings of Hollywood. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three children. The Starlet is her second novel.

BLOG TOUR: Amazon Queen by Lori Devoti (Book Review 2010-82)

    Product Description

Being an Amazon ruler just became a royal pain.Amazon queen Zery Kostovska has never questioned tribe traditions. After all, these rules have kept the tribe strong for millennia and enabled them to live undetected, even in modern-day America. Zery is tough, fair, commanding—the perfect Amazon leader. At least, she was. A new high priestess with a penchant for secrecy and technology is threatening Zery’s rule. Plus, with the discovery of the Amazon sons, males with the same skills as their female counterparts, even Zery can’t deny that the tribe must change. But how? Some want to cooperate with the sons. Others believe brutal new leadership is needed—and are willing to kill to make it happen.Once, Zery’s word was law. Now, she has no idea who to trust, especially with one powerful Amazon son making her question all her instincts. For Zery, tribe comes first, but the battle drawing near is unlike any she’s faced before . . . and losing might cost her both the tribe and her life.

    LOVED IT

I read Amazon Ink when it first came out and was fascinated by the strong character of Mel.  This book is told from the point of view of Zery and the characters follow through in this one as well.  If you haven't read the first book in the series, I think you can pick this one up and easily get into the story and characters.  This is fast paced and there is some potential romance but it is not fully followed through.  There are some nice subplots that really keep the story moving and I hope that the story will develop even more in the next book in the series.  This is a wonderful urban fantasy that is nicely done.

Stop by Linda's blog and enter her contest!

May 24 – 31: Interview with Author Michele Ashman Bell for young adult novel “Summer In Paris.” I read it and loved it, so it’s good for adults, too. This book is about a 16-year-old spoiled rich girl who is sent to her cousins for the summer in Paris, Idaho. She never realized such a place existed! Feeling like she's been sentenced to three months in Hickville Prison, Kenzie is forced to get up at the crack of dawn, do chores, wash her own clothes, gather eggs, hoe the garden, etc. She feels like she's about to die until she meets handsome Adam White whose got a deep secret. This book is quite humorous and I found myself laughing out loud. Insatiable by Meg Cabot (Book Review 2010-81)

    Product Description

Sick of hearing about vampires? So is Meena Harper.
But her bosses are making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn't believe in them.
Not that Meena isn't familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you're going to die. (Not that you're going to believe her. No one ever does.)
But not even Meena's precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets—then makes the mistake of falling in love with—Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side. It's a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.
The problem is, Lucien's already dead. Maybe that's why he's the first guy Meena's ever met whom she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena's always been able to see everyone else's future, she's never been able look into her own.
And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.
Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future. . . .
    If she even has one.

    LOVED IT

It took me a couple chapters to get into this book and then the light bulb went off over my head.  It is a satire on all of the vampire books that are popular right now and Cabot does a superb job at being serious about the subject and ensuing romance while poking fun at the same time.   I hope I am taking the tone of this book correctly since it confused me a little bit.  If I am correct, then it is brilliantly done.  There is a lot of clever play on the Dracula theme, right down to the character names.  Overall, it was an enjoyable read.  I think that even though this is an adult book, older teens can enjoy it as well.

Street Boners by Gavin McInnes (Book Review 2010-80)

    Product Description

Fifteen years after founding Vice, Gavin McInnes has poured his creative juices into a new endeavor: StreetCarnage.com. Growing in size and influence at an alarming rate, the site's main feature is the new and improved version of Gavin's "DOs and DON'Ts," now tantalizingly called Street Boners.

These Boners have been polished and compounded into a book that takes the best of the site and adds hundreds more gems! With 1,312 photos, hilarious captions, and a harsh new rating system-from one to 10 kitten faces-STREET BONERS makes sure no glorious fashion statement goes unnoticed. Innocent citizens are either damned to hell or relentlessly exalted into heaven. Chloe Sevigny, Debbie Harry, Fred Armisen, and Tim & Eric also contribute their scathing wit to the book, and the end result is a New York fashion bible no bathroom should be without.

    About the Author

Gavin McInnes co-founded Vice magazinein 1994, and later authored two successful books with the Vice brand--Vice Dos and Don'ts and The Vice Guide to Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. After splitting from Vice in 2007 due to creative differences, McInnes co-founded the company Street Carnage. McInnes has also published eight issues of a comic titled Pervert and played in a number of punk bands.

    LOVED IT

This book was such a hit with my son and all of his friends.  They are all in their early twenties, but I enjoyed it just as much.  I now regularly visit the author's site for daily updates--there are actually some great posts there as well. Since the religion in this household is pretty much sarcasm, it is making a great addition to my son's bathroom humor collection.  It is not a book to be taken seriously, so relax and page through this one.

GIVEAWAY! The Knight Life by Keith Knight

    Product Description

The Knight Life is a hilariously twisted view of life through the eyes and pen of its creator, community-oriented urban hipster and award-winning cartoonist Keith Knight. The Knight Life deftly blends political insight and neurotic humor in a uniquely fluid and dynamic style, offering a comic strip that's fresh, sharp, topical and funny. Designed for daily newspapers, The Knight Life follows Knight's long-running, 2007 Harvey Award-winning weekly comic strip "The K Chronicles," which appears on salon.com.

An unabashedly provocative political and social satire, The Knight Life tackles contemporary issues like consumer culture, bacon, the media, race, family and everything else, gently mocking the minutiae of daily life with self-deprecating humor, honesty and goofiness-a combination that's perfect for the comics. And The Knight Life's energetic style reminds readers that comics can look funny as well as read funny. The result is accessible yet edgy, compassionate and political-and never preachy. Cartoonist and comic historian R.C. Harvey said, "The Knight Life is undeniably the best new laugh- and thought-provoker on the comics page. Not since Calvin and Hobbes has there been so novel an entertainment in the funnies."

    ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

This chick lit story reads as a television or movie plot. It really reminded me of Candace Bushnell in a really good way and the fact that I try not to look up any reviews or details about the author until I am involved in the story and was glad I didn't. I really want to know how the author was able to incorporate famous actors and their "conversations" in this book. You have to read the book (which I fully recommend) to get the details. I thought this book just flew by and I really liked all of the characters and their faults which are detailed quite thoroughly.
