I have pulled together a list of three books that have scary dogs (or werewolves - which in my opinion, are still dogs since they are in the canine family).
The first book in this list has to be Cujo by Stephen King. That rabid monster is probably the scariest thing I have ever read. King brings the mental breakdown of a dog to life and the fight between human and nature becomes all too real. You will avoid dogs after reading this one.
Next up, is Toby Barlow's Sharp Teeth. This is written in free verse and the descriptions of the werewolves as they rip each other apart are very intense. You get the full sense of the pack life in a lyrical form. This one will keep you up at night.
This young adult novel will hint at werewolves, but you don't get to really read about them until the end. The ending will shock you when you find that humans are the true monsters.
Funny, the only real run in I ever had with a dog was with my fathers huge st. bernard. He was older, and sleeping at my feet, so one day I decided to lay down beside him. He woke up, and snarled and the next thing I knew my whole head was in his mouth. He didn't bite my, thankfully, but he could have killed me if he wanted to. That being said, I really enjoyed the book cujo, but for some reason, I could not picture it as horror.
ReplyDeleteI was bitten by a dog when I was a kid, but it was a dog that was abused by its owners (and should never have been left out with kids). And yet, no lingering terror of dogs...I love my slobbery hound!
ReplyDeleteCujo was terrifying to me. I thought it masterful how King makes a seemingly benign situation (locked inside a car with a menacing dog outside) into an incredibly intense and scary situation! I really got into it!
