Review THE KINGMAKER'S DAUGHTER by PHILIPPA GREGORY

Book Description

August 14, 2012 The Cousins' War

Spies, poison, and curses surround her...

Is there anyone she can trust?

The Kingmaker's Daughter is the gripping story of the daughters of the man known as the "Kingmaker," Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick: the most powerful magnate in fifteenth-century England. Without a son and heir, he uses his daughters, Anne and Isabel as pawns in his political games, and they grow up to be influential players in their own right. In this novel, her first sister story since The Other Boleyn Girl, Philippa Gregory explores the lives of two fascinating young women.

At the court of Edward IV and his beautiful queen, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne grows from a delightful child to become ever more fearful and desperate when her father makes war on his former friends. Married at age fourteen, she is soon left widowed and fatherless, her mother in sanctuary and her sister married to the enemy. Anne manages her own escape by marrying Richard, Duke of Gloucester, but her choice will set her on a collision course with the overwhelming power of the royal family and will cost the lives of those she loves most in the world, including her precious only son, Prince Edward. Ultimately, the kingmaker's daughter will achieve her father's greatest ambition.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

As sisters, Anne and Isabel are best friends, confidants and later become rivals.  Their father, Richard Neville, uses the girls as political pawns and betroths them to the man that will give him the likeliest gain.  Anne finds herself in and out of arrangements and she finally ends up with the love of her life after her first husband dies and she essentially elopes with Richard, second in line.  With him, she has a son, and they find themselves on the throne after multiple intrigues and escaping her sister, Isabel and her husband, both of whom have tried to use her as a pawn.

I always forget how much I adore Philippa Gregory's work until I pick up one of her books.  This story about Anne Neville doesn't disappoint.  Anne was aunt and guardian of the princes who later turned up dead in the Tower of London and I think her sister's story will be told next and it will be interesting to see how Isabel's point of view relates these same stories.  I always end up pulling out the family tree to get the background on these characters and how they are so interrelated.  I think this one will even appeal to teen readers since the main characters are teens.

BOOK TRAILER TUESDAY Philippa Gregory discusses her audiobook, CHANGELING @simonteen

Book Description

May 29, 2012 Order of Darkness (Book 1)

Dark myths, medieval secrets, intrigue, and romance populate the pages of the first-ever teen series from #1 bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl
Italy, 1453. Seventeen-year-old Luca Vero is brilliant, gorgeous—and accused of heresy. Cast out of his religious order for using the new science to question old superstitious beliefs, Luca is recruited into a secret sect: The Order of the Dragon, commissioned by Pope Nicholas V to investigate evil and danger in its many forms, and strange occurrences across Europe, in this year—the end of days.

Isolde is a seventeen-year-old girl shut up in a nunnery so she can’t inherit any of her father’s estate. As the nuns walk in their sleep and see strange visions, Isolde is accused of witchcraft—and Luca is sent to investigate her, but finds himself plotting her escape.

Despite their vows, despite themselves, love grows between Luca and Isolde as they travel across Europe with their faithful companions, Freize and Ishraq. The four young people encounter werewolves, alchemists, witches, and death-dancers as they head toward a real-life historical figure who holds the boundaries of Christendom and the secrets of the Order of the Dragon.

The first in a series, this epic and richly detailed drama is grounded in historical communities and their mythic beliefs. It includes a medieval map of Europe that will track their journey; and the interior will include relevant decorative elements as well as an interior line illustration. And look for a QR code that links to a note from the author with additional, detailed information about the setting and the history that informed the writing. With Philippa Gregory’s trademark touch, this novel deftly brings the past—and its salacious scandals—vividly and disturbingly to life.

REVIEW: Women of the Cousin's War by Philippa Gregory, David Baldwin & Michael Jones

Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory teams with two eminent historians to explore the historical characters in the real-life world behind her Wars of the Roses novels. PHILIPPA GREGORY and her fellow historians describe the extraordinary lives of the heroines of her Cousins’ War books: Jacquetta, Duchess of Bedford; Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV; and Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII.
In her essay on Jacquetta, Philippa Gregory uses original documents, archaeology, and histories of myth and witchcraft to create the first-ever biography of the young duchess who survived two reigns and two wars to become the first lady at two rival courts. David Baldwin, established authority on the Wars of the Roses, tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the first commoner to marry a king of England for love; and Michael Jones, fellow of the Royal Historical Society, writes of Margaret Beaufort, the almost-unknown matriarch of the House of Tudor.
In the introduction, Gregory writes revealingly about the differences between history and historical fiction. How much of a role does speculation play in writing each? How much fiction and how much fact should there be in a historical novel? How are female historians changing our view of women in history?
The Women of the Cousins’ War is beautifully illustrated with rare portraits and source materials. As well as offering fascinating insights into the inspirations behind Philippa Gregory’s fiction, it will appeal to all with an interest in this period.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

This book is an excellent companion piece to the series of books about the women who probably had more to do with the Tudor dynasty than they are given credit for.  The book is broken into three parts, each written by a different author to give a place in history to these fascinating women.  The wonderful  introduction by Gregory explains that women were very rarely mentioned and record keeping about them, is spotty at best.   By piecing together historical documents, letters and conjecture, it is possible to recreate the importance these women had in the history of the ruling class.

The first section written by Gregory sparkles with her familiar style of bringing history to life and covers Jaquetta, the Duchess of Bedford and her rise in English Royalty.  The next section written by Baldwin details the ascent of Elizabeth Woodville answers many questions about her life, but it lacked a bit in the sparkle department.  The last section, written by Jones, reveals Margaret Beaufort, who I disliked in The Red Queen, but now understand a bit better.  This is a must read for anyone that wants a better understanding of the lives of these women.

REVIEW: The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory

Product Description

Heiress to the red rose of Lancaster, Margaret Beaufort never surrenders her belief that her house is the true ruler of England and that she has a great destiny before her. Her ambitions are disappointed when her sainted cousin Henry VI fails to recognize her as a kindred spirit, and she is even more dismayed when he sinks into madness. Her mother mocks her plans, revealing that Margaret will always be burdened with the reputation of her father, one of the most famously incompetent English commanders in France. But worst of all for Margaret is when she discovers that her mother is sending her to a loveless marriage in remote Wales. Married to a man twice her age, quickly widowed, and a mother at only fourteen, Margaret is determined to turn her lonely life into a triumph. She sets her heart on putting her son on the throne of England regardless of the cost to herself, to England, and even to the little boy. Disregarding rival heirs and the overwhelming power of the York dynasty, she names him Henry, like the king; sends him into exile; and pledges him in marriage to her enemy Elizabeth of York’s daughter. As the political tides constantly move and shift, Margaret charts her own way through another loveless marriage, treacherous alliances, and secret plots. She feigns loyalty to the usurper Richard III and even carries his wife’s train at her coronation.
Widowed a second time, Margaret marries the ruthless, deceitful Thomas, Lord Stanley, and her fate stands on the knife edge of his will. Gambling her life that he will support her, she then masterminds one of the greatest rebellions of the time—all the while knowing that her son has grown to manhood, recruited an army, and now waits for his opportunity to win the greatest prize.
In a novel of conspiracy, passion, and coldhearted ambition, number one bestselling author Philippa Gregory has brought to life the story of a proud and determined woman who believes that she alone is destined, by her piety and lineage, to shape the course of history.

LIKED IT

Margaret Beaufort was probably my least favorite in all of Philippa Gregory's heroines.  I normally love reading about the English monarchs, but I don't know if this queen is at all royal.  I guess for what she accomplished as a women in her time was to say the least, incredible and for that reason alone she was never painted in a good light in any historical documents.  Gregory does do a wonderful job in portraying Margaret as what she must have been a scheming person, only trying to further herself and her family and cutting those down that got in her way.  She is a most significant figure since she is really the one who brought the Tudor name to fame.   Not my favorite of Gregory's books, but it is a good historical perspective.
