REVIEW: A Lawman's Christmas by Linda Lael Miller

DESCRIPTION

The sudden death of the town marshal leaves Blue River, Texas, without a lawman…and twenty-five-year-old Dara Rose Nolan without a husband. As winter approaches and her meager seamstress income dwindles, she has three options. Yet she won't give up her two young daughters, refuses to join the fallen women of the Bitter Gulch Saloon and can't fathom condemning herself to another loveless marriage. Unfortunately she must decide—soon—because there's a new marshal in town, and she's living under his roof. With the heart of a cowboy, Clay McKettrick plans to start a ranch and finally settle down. He isn't interested in uprooting Dara Rose and her children, but he is interested in giving her protection, friendship—and passion. And when they say "I do" to a marriage of convenience, the temporary lawman's Christmas wish is to make Dara Rose his permanent wife….

About the Author

In January of 2006, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Linda Lael Miller left the Arizona horse property she's called home for the past five years and listened to the call of her heart. Packing up her work-in-progress for HQN Books; her dogs, Sadie and Bernice, and her four horses, the author of more than 70 novels bid farewell to her home in the desert and returned to the place of her birth, Spokane, Washington.
The daughter of a town marshal, Linda grew up in Northport, WA, a community of 500 on the Columbia River, 120 miles north of Spokane. Her childhood remembrances include riding horses and playing cowgirl on her grandparents' nearby farm. Her grandparents' spread was so rustic that in the early days it lacked electricity and running water.
As delightful as this childhood was, Linda longed to see the world. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she left to pursue her dream. Because of the success of her author career, Linda was able to live part-time in London for several years, spend time in Italy and travel to such far-off destinations as Russia, Hong Kong and Israel. Now, Linda says, the wanderlust is (mostly) out of her blood, and she's come full circle, back to the people and the places she knows and loves.
Before Linda begins her writing day, she takes her first cup of coffee while enjoying the scenic view of the wooded draw behind her new home. The first morning there, a snowfall blanketed the pine trees, something she had missed in the desert outside Scottsdale. Still enamored with the people she came to love in Arizona, she says she will still set books in that starkly beautiful area, and, of course, in other stories the action will take place in Washington.
Devoted to helping others pursue their dreams, the author will launch her sixth round of Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women in May of this year. A talented speaker, she donates all her speaking honoraria to her scholarship fund. The stipends are awarded to women who seek to better their lot in life through education.
It's no wonder the protagonists in Miller's novels are women her readers admire for their honor, courage, trustworthiness, valor and determination to succeed, despite overwhelming odds. 'These qualities make them excellent role models for young women,' Miller explains. 'The male leads possess equally noble traits that today's woman would be delighted to find in her life's mate.'
The author traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she made her first sale.
Although Linda has written successfully in other genres, she is best known for stories set in the West'stories like McKETTRICK'S CHOICE (HQN Books March 2006 paperback); THE MAN FROM STONE CREEK (HQN, June 2006 hardcover) and that very first novel, FLETCHER'S WOMAN, which is being reissued in 2006. Her stories, set in yesterday's world, and today's, are historical romances, romantic thrillers, and other contemporary tales. They consistently score on prestigious national bestseller lists.
Linda has come a long way since leaving her sheltered life in Northport at age 18 to experience the world. 'Growing up in that time and place, in a family grounded in Western values, served me well,' she allows. 'And I'm happy to be back home.'

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Clay McKettrick takes a job as the new of Blue River, Texas, a town fallen on hard times.  He meets the deceased Marshall's wife, Dara Rose (love that name!) and her two young daughters.  Dara is trying to decide how she can survive and not give up her daughters.  The story takes place in the early 1910's, so given the date, what happens next is extremely feasible.  She marries the new Marshall out of convenience which is actually to both their advantage since Clay needs someone to keep his home.  It is the children who steal this book though.  Edrina is a hoot when she tells Clay exactly how her father died...in the arms of another woman in an upstairs room at the local saloon.  There are more great one liners from her and her sister Harriet.

So the story is an age old tale, especially in historical fiction, but as always, it is the author who can put a twist on it and make it fresh.  The children really sparked me in this one.  Clay is a decent guy and pretty enlighten for this time period.  Dara is more than his match and it is just wonderful to watch them grow together.  This is a nice addition to her Western stories and the perfect tie in for the holidays!

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Brody has come back home after traveling the rodeo circuit and making a name for himself.  He has reconciled with  his twin, Conner (in Creed's Honor) and the story now focuses on Brody.  Carolyn has firey copper hair and an attitude to match and has run into Brody several times.  After a failed relationship once, Carolyn is having second thoughts about him, but then he disappears and leaves a drunken message for her.  Even though the sparks fly between them and Carolyn wants to settle down, Brody still seems to be trouble. I loved that Carolyn was working on a gypsy-type skirt that seemed to grow as her feelings for Brody came to the surface and it also felt like the skirt was a metaphor for their relationship.

This is pretty much a traditional romance, but with a bunch of great twists and a cowboy flair.  Both Brody and Carolyn seem like people you could meet anywhere near a small town.  I am now a cowboy convert because I really enjoy Miller's writing style and how she weaves the western cowboy theme into a place that you want to revisit. I can't wait for the next on!

A Note from Linda Lael Miller

Dear Friends,
It’s been a long winter, here on the Triple L in eastern Washington, and we’re all—people and critters—ready for sunshine and flowers and blue skies and green, green grass. It’s sure been a crazy year, weather-wise, all over the planet, hasn’t it?

The roses and the peony bushes in my yard are leafing out and sprouting shoots, as are the lilacs, and if I had the time, I’d probably hover over them, saying, “Grow, grow!” Soon they’ll be lovely, especially the Veteran's Honor roses I planted in honor of my dad. For those of you looking to do something special in keeping with Memorial Day weekend, I highly recommend planting a rose in honor of a serviceman. And don’t forget the families of those whose loved ones are away, serving abroad. They’re sacrificing a lot for the rest of us. Maybe cook a special dish and deliver it to one of these families, with a hug and a great big thank you?
I’m working away on a brand new book, the first in a series, and doing some traveling. As I write this I’m pulling out my fancy boots and dress western jackets to pack for Book Expo America (BEA) in New York, where I’ll get to hobnob with my publishing family. Although I’m pretty much a home body, I thoroughly enjoy this annual event, which brings all kinds of people involved in books and book publishing under one roof to look at upcoming releases and to discuss trends. I’ll be home the rest of the summer, writing and making art and enjoying my dogs, cats and horses. They’re all thriving, I’m happy to say.
I’m delighted to tell you a little about Creed’s Honor, the second book in my new trilogy, which began with A Creed in Stone Creek in March. That was the story of Steven Creed and Melissa O’Ballivan, two people who were meant for each other but had it in mind to go separate ways—little did they know... In this launch book of the trilogy I introduced Steven’s identical twin cousins, Conner and Brody. These two stubborn cowboys have been estranged for a lot of years. In Creed’s Honor, Conner has his hands full trying to keep from falling in love with Tricia McCall, who plans on shaking the dust of Lonesome Bend, Colorado, off her feet and leaving the minute she’s completed her business there. So Conner really doesn’t need trouble from his brother, too. Trouble is what Conner gets, though, and plenty of it.
Creed’s Honor goes on sale this week, May 31, and will be followed June 28 by Brody’s story, Creed’s Legacy. I hope you’ll sign on with the Creed outfit and ride this particular trail with us, because it’s going to be quite a journey, full of romance and laughter and furry four-leggers sure to win your heart.
My publisher, HQN Books, has done a mighty fine job with what’s called a widget that you’ll find on www.LindaLaelMiller.com, along with a video of the three cowboys who star on the covers of this trilogy. All you have to do is click on this widget, and you can read an excerpt of Creed’s Legacy as if you were holding the book in your hands!
Happy summer, my friends!

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Connor Creed has given up his dreams to follow in his uncle's footsteps and become a rancher in Lonesome Bend, CO.  The name of the town is more than appropriate for Connor and when his wild twin brother, Brody, reenters his life, he finds himself longing for the rodeo dreams he put aside. Brody stole the love of his life, which for Connor is difficult and he has a hard time reconciling his emotions.  Tricia McCall ends up in Lonesome Bend after her father dies and she takes over his trailer park.  She intends to stay long enough to sell the property and move to Seattle. Her grandmother is moving behind the scenes to bring Tricia together with Connor.  Things move slowly but surely and when a stray dog (Valentino) comes into Tricia's life along with a goddaughter named Sasha.

Of course, I love a story where a dog and girl are the catalyst for a romance! I really enjoyed this one and look forward to the next book in this series.  The book is pure and simple romance with a bit of angst and drama thrown in. There are some really wonderful dialogues in this book and the conversations are so natural and real that made the book very enjoyable.  The minor character really added a much needed spice to the romance between Connor and Tricia.
