BANNED BOOK GIVEAWAY HOP !

Banned Book Week Giveaway Hop!

The week of 9.22.13 through 9.28.13 is set aside to bring notice to a growing trend in public and school libraries -- pulling literature from circulation based on the actions of a few, not the majority of the public.  Since 1982, the American Library Association has put together campaigns to make everyone aware of the circumstances of this form of censorship.  Some of the books banned are for minor issues like language that was once accepted but is now objectionable.  Instead of personal responsibility, these censors wish to impose their beliefs on everyone.  You can read more about this important week at the BANNED BOOK WEEK site.

I don't believe in censorship of any media.  I think it is a parents' place to make sure their children are consuming appropriate materials.  I don't want someone else telling me what is right for my child, nor do I want to tell anyone what is acceptable for their family.  I let my son read, watch, listen to anything he wanted with a few important guidelines in place.  I reviewed and discussed with him the media he was consuming.  He turned out more advanced, making better choices and incredibly responsible for those decisions.

MY GIVEAWAY:

I have a very unmentionable set of books that ranked number 4 on last year's list up for grabs.

  1. I think it's fantastic that you stand up against this awful practice of banning books. Thank you.

  2. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in the banned books. I was informed that our local high school are reading Shades of Grey!!
I do think the library should stock what the public want, after all it is paid for with our tax dollars.

  3. Cozy -- why on earth would HS students be reading those books unless it is to teach them how not to write a trashy novel. There are far better books than this series. I was hoping they were banned because they are poorly written trash, not because of the content. You can see why I didn't review them LOL! I bet those kids just want to see what the fuss is all about and I bet they are disappointed.

  8. Thank you for the giveaway. I would like to read the book and see what all the fuss is about- though I've heard it isn't much.

I do think that there should be a book rating like in movies where parents can monitor what their children are reading. I was a mature reader as a young teenager but I know a lot of readers aren't ready to handle the information coming from what they're reading. A book rating that lets readers and parents know what kind of content they can find in a book would be helpful. This would have kept me from reading several books and being horrifyingly shocked at some of the graphic information I was reading.

  9. I agree with your view point on banned books. How ridiculous that someone else would tell my kids what they can and cannot read.
    Thanks for the chance.

  15. This is a cool giveaway. I think it is ridiculous that any reading material is banned. The books should be located in age appropriate places. I would be shocked to see Shades of Grey in my kids school (ages 12, 13, &16). Ultimately it is up to the parents to allow a child to read something like that.

  18. Thank you for this giveaway. I have never understood why we ban books. Banning books is bad because we don't agree with someone thoughts or a time in our past. It is so very wrong!!! History is history, and you can't change the past and the way that they spoke back in the day etc.

  19. It really doesn't make sense to ban books. I haven't read that series so I'd love to win it. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  21. Sheeze - when I was a kid (back in the day) we had to hide Catcher In The Rye under our mattress - in my son's time, it was required reading. If you don't like what is in a book -- don't read it.

  26. Thanks for the giveaway!

Banning books tends to close minds, instead of fostering understanding. I always stick with one simple rule: If you, as an adult, don't want to read it, don't, but don't tell me what I can read. However, the responsibility falls on me, as the parent, to monitor my children's reading.

  30. I don't think any book should be banned. Parents are the only people who have the right to say what their children can or can not read. And for legal adults, no one should have the right to say what they can and can not read.

  42. Like you describe with your son, my mom always let me pick what I was going to read and had the opinion that I would ask questions if I needed to. I really do believe that made me a more critical and advanced reader. I love the idea that children should pick what suits them and their family.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Excellent choice of subject for a blog hop!! I believe that authors should use their discretion when writing for certain age groups and parents should discuss age-appropriate book choices with their children. If this is done, there's no reason to ban a book ever. Although technically, most books that have been banned were simply not taking the same political or religious viewpoint that certain groups didn't like. Basically, political banning. This should never happen.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree no book should be banned but some books are for age different I agrees and as an adult any book one wishes to read should be up to that person

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm a librarian and definitely think that books should not be banned, but some of them should come with a warning label.

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys or maybe Shades of Grey: A Novel by Jasper Fforde. Either of these would be very appropriate for HS students.

  67. Thanks for the chance to get to win some "interesting" books.
I think it is ridiculous to ban books and yet there is soooo much on television that should not be aired. They need to ban some of the language, the insinuations and the story lines on it.
Oh well, I think I have read most on the banned list and didn't even realize they were banned.

  73. I don't believe that age appropriate books should be banned from any library. It should be my choice as a parent to tell my child what he can and can't read. I feel like we as a nation have gone overboard with censorship.

  88. I've said it plenty before-the books that show up on the banned lists (both classics and modern) are some of the best reading out there. Don't like it? Then don't read it...but don't tell me what I should and shouldn't be reading.

  90. I hate the idea of banning books. I get that some are very controversial and maybe out of people's comfort zones. But, it's fiction.

I do see how banning certain books in schools would be appropriate, as many parents would not want their children exposed to them.
