Do you have another book in the works?

Well... the good news is I’ve just finished the first draft of my second book. The bad news is I’m still not entirely sure what it’s about. It’s been a real challenge because it’s written  in the third person, and involves quite a large cast of characters, whereas the first one was all from the viewpoint of one slightly warped individual, which made it much more straightforward to write, if a bit claustrophobic at times. With the second one, I’d come back to it afresh in the morning and find characters I couldn’t even recall having written the night before. It was like ‘who the hell are you? And what exactly are you for?’

What are you reading right now?

It sounds shallow but I tend to have summer reading and winter reading, much in the way that I have summer and winter food. Summer reading is the literary equivalent of a light salad or a plate of fresh fruit, whereas winter reading is much more heavyweight, and the effects linger longer. This afternoon, a rare day of sunshine in London, I was sitting in the garden reading Afterwards, the new thriller by Rosamund Lupton – well-plotted, engrossing and not too taxing.

How many books a year do you read?

I usually read one or two books a week. Thank god for my local library or I’d be stony broke (NB: please Mr Cameron stop with your plans to axe our libraries).

What does your dog like to do while you write or read?

I have the world’s most emotionally needy dog. We got her from a rescue centre in Southern Spain when she was just a few weeks old and she has grossly overdeveloped Separation Issues. When I’m reading or writing, she becomes desperate for attention and will often nudge her nose under the crook of my elbow, jerking my hand off the book or keyboard and then resting her nose on my leg and looking up in what she hopes is an endearing way. But I’m wise to it now. The trick is to avoid eye contact at all costs.

What is your dog’s favorite activity?

Lying in wait by the open back door ready to pounce on any unsuspecting cats or squirrels stupid enough to try to cross our back yard. She’s only a runty little thing, but in her tiny mind she’s fearsome as a lioness.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Sally and Clive are having an affair and Clive suddenly breaks it off to reconcile with his wife.  Written in the form of a journal, the story chronicles her stalking of Clive and his family while she falls deeper into a depression.  Sally is not some single woman. she has a partner and children of her own, so she should have started devoting her time to them, but finds herself totally consumed with Clive's life.  Not to say that she is a hateful or hurtful person, but it is easy to see how this witty and intelligent woman is driven towards insanity.  It reminded me a bit of Fatal Attraction with immense amounts of angst and delusions, but without the bunny at the end.  This is something you won't be able to put down and it can be creepy beyond belief.  The ending completely surprise me and was perfect for this story.

I really thought that Cohen did a very smart thing in telling this story by using a diary type format. Although a bit one-sided, you get a clear picture of exactly what Sally is thinking and with the encouragement of her therapist, she goes back to figure out what happened to her and why.  As she digs deeper you can see the crazy come to the surface.  I really enjoyed this romantic thriller and I'm not really sure if that is the right category, but it was thrilling to me!  If you like James Patterson or Lisa Scottoline, I am sure you will enjoy this one as well.
