MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Luciana is a centuries old demon and thrives on the darkness of her soul.  She must make a sacrifice of a human soul each year to keep her life on earth. This year she has missed her deadline by a few hours because she has been detained by Brandon Clarkson, a cop turned Angel enforcer in order to take out her evilness from the world.  She manages to escape and complete the murder of a young opera star, but it isn't enough.  Satan sends his henchman, Corbin to make a new deal with Luciana.  She must kill the Angel or she loses her soul to him forever and she must do it within a week.  Coming from medieval Italy, she is well versed in poison, so becomes her plan to kill Brandon.

You don't need to read the first book since the characters from that one are only briefly mentioned in this one, but Where Demons Fear to Tread does put this story in good perspective.  Luciana is portrayed with just enough doubt of her evilness that you believe that she can overcome that and be redeemed.  Her backstory is one of heartbreaking devastation that was probably a common thread while she was growing up in Italy ages ago with forced marriage and being beaten as a wife.  Brandon has his own issues and is truly one of those good souls that aren't overbearing in their goodness.

Well, I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first for some reason.  It was a bit more gritty and sexy and was a very quick read for me.  The characters and their internal dialogue was wonderful and the two stars really came together.  The use of speaking through dreams was a perfect way to connect them.  I love the idea that even in total evilness, there can be redeeming good.  This is a different sort of paranormal romance that has a nice message of that goodness triumphing!  Now I can't wait for the next one.

Q+A with STEPHANIE CHONG author of THE DEMONESS OF WAKING DREAMS @MiraEditors @StephanieCChong

Dexter surfing!

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

The Mr. Mugs books by Martha Kambeitz and Carol Roth. It’s a series about an Old English Sheepdog. The books were used in Canadian elementary schools in the 70s and 80s. No word of a lie – I’m not just saying this because yours is a dog-themed book blog!

2. What are you reading right now?

Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose. I adored the TV series. Lately, I've been fascinated by WWII history, and some of this history is working its way into my next book.

3. How does your garden grow?

I'm ashamed to admit that I have a black thumb! However, my husband and I have a beautiful flower garden outside our front door, which our thoughtful green-thumbed neighbours tend on our behalf. So we're able to enjoy many gorgeous flowers. I'm also ashamed to say I don't even know what they're all called, but there are some beautiful pink and purple hydrangeas that I love.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

"Game of Thrones." I haven't started reading the books yet, but they're definitely next on my TBR pile.

5. What makes you cringe?

The thought of something happening to Dexter, our pug. He's now a grown-up dog at 2 years old, and is having all sorts of new adventures. Here he is, learning to surf this summer.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Serena St. Clair dies while trying to rescue a mother and her young daughters from a horrible car crash in which the only survivors are the two children.  Serena finds herself "recycled" as a newly minted guardian angel selected to follow Hollywood's latest star, Nick.  Trailing him one night, Serena finds herself in a nightclub known for illegal activities and meets the owner, Julian, who is immediately taken with her.  She also has feelings for him, even though she recognizes his incarnate evil as a demon.  The story mostly takes place over a week in Las Vegas as Serena tries to save Nick from himself and his demons--both literal and figurative.  Serena doesn't realize her superiors have other plans for her.  And that is all I am going to tell you about the plot since you MUST read this one!

This latest trend of angels and demons is really an age old story about good versus evil.  Chong delivers on that story, but like a musician, she twists the words so that while the melody may be the same, it is a completely different song.  The characters of Serena and Julian mesh so perfectly together that is like music when they interact.  I love how she shows that they each have elements of good and evil existing within themselves and nothing is black or white when it comes to redemption.  So this could have been just another angel story and luckily it doesn't.  I read this in one night and can't wait for the next book in this series since there are many other characters that can be developed.

Do you have another book in the works?
My second novel, The Demoness of Waking Dreams, will be out in 2012.  It’s the continuation of my “Company of Angels” series, and there’s a third book planned, too.
What are you reading right now?
Kathryn Stockett’s The Help; Karen Marie Moning’s Bloodfever
How many books a year do you read?
A lot – I can’t even guess!  It varies from year to year.  I was reading an enormous number of books when I was doing a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and a Master’s in Creative Writing (simultaneously, separate programs at separate schools), until I finished both those degrees in 2009.
What does your dog like to do while you write or read?
Dexter goes to the dog beaches and dog parks for sessions with a dog training/exercise company during the day.  At home, he has a favorite place in the living room front window where he likes to sit for people- and dog-watching.
What is your dog’s favorite activity?
Playing with his dog friends.
