Tracey Garvis Graves lives in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa with her husband, two children, and hyper dog Chloe. She is the author of On the Island, Uncharted, and Covet. She blogs at www.traceygarvisgraves.com using colorful language and a snarky sense of humor to write about pop culture, silly television shows, and her suburban neighborhood. MY THOUGHTS: LOVED IT
This story is all too real. Claire and Chris are really in love when they are married. They have two kids and things are going well until Chris loses his job, sending him into a spiral of depression and self doubt. Claire tries to be supportive but Chris shuts her out. When he finally does get another job, it takes him away from his family and their rocky marriage is assaulted again. Claire meets Daniel, a cop, when she is at her lowest and Daniel's attention. The story flashes back and forth to when Chris and Claire were truly a couple. Claire really just needs a friend and some attention. She is the stable force in this marriage and she is about to shatter.
I found this story to be entirely too realistic. It was heartbreaking and emotional with all sorts of "what you do" situations that are not made any easier since any one who has ever had a relationship can easily identify. There are communication issues. stress and depression, none of them handled in a productive way but everyone tries. The way the book covers each character and gives their point of view only adds to this tale. At first I thought this was all about an affair, but it is more about what happens to a couple when they must deal with issues and no one wants to talk. This one will make you read straight through and maybe shed a tear or two.
