Giveaway & Guest Post DARK WALTZ by AM HARGROVE @Amhargrove1

PLEASE WELCOME A.M. HARGROVE TO BOOKHOUNDS!

How Jurek Changed MY Life

I’ve written several books. When I began writing, I thought I wanted to strictly write YA/NA books. That is until I wrote in Jurek in Determinant. He changed my life. It sounds totally corny...stupid really. How could my own character change my life? I developed him for God’s sake!

Well, let me tell you how. In my first books, I was all about the good in everything. That’s how The Guardians of Vesturon came to be. Don’t mistake me here...I still believe in all of that. I look at something and I always try to find the good in it. I don’t care what it is. But the world we’re in isn’t always like that. I began to think about how we got to this place. Somewhere along the way something happened to change us. Something went wrong. I started looking at that as a character in a story. Enter Jurek...

Jurek isn’t bad, but he acted like that in Determinant. That is until he met January. It was the same in Dark Waltz. He was never really taught HOW to act. What I did when I developed him was took the world around us and created a character. I wanted to take someone like him and transform him from a real douche into a good guy. Doing that changed my writing too. It forced me to cross boundaries I never would have before if I hadn’t written about Jurek in the first place. He went against everything in my nature. I didn’t want someone in my books that pushed a woman around. I didn’t want someone who treated a woman harshly. That always creeped me out. But what if I could take this guy, who never had a role model, who never had someone to teach him that showing anger was bad, and change him into a protective and loving guy? What if I could do that in a good way? I wouldn’t know unless I tried so I went for it. Writing about this troubled guy opened up my mind to not only this character that I created, but to writing other things too. I wanted to push my limits and I did.

That’s how Jurek changed me...he made me realize that I could develop those kinds of characters and be proud of them. That I didn’t have to create cookie cutter sweet guys all the time. And that sometimes you just have to break the mold.
