GIVEAWAY Serpent's Kiss By Melissa de la Cruz @MelissadelaCruz @HyperionTeens

Book Description

June 12, 2012 Witches of East End
The intriguing Beauchamp family, introduced in the New York Times bestselling Witches of East End, returns in Serpent's Kiss, with dizzying plot twists and spellbinding magic.
Joanna and her daughters, bookish Ingrid and wild-child Freya, are just settling into the newfound peace that has been cast over their small, off-the map town of North Hampton. With the centuries-old restriction against practicing magic lifted, casting spells, mixing potions, and curing troubled souls has never felt so good for the three witches. That is, until everything gets turned upside down--from Joanna's organized kitchen to Ingrid's previously nonexistent love life to Freya's once unshakeable faith in her sexy soul mate, Killian Gardiner.
When Freya's twin brother, Freddie, suddenly returns, escaped from Limbo and professing innocence on a long-ago crime, Freya should be ecstatic. The golden boy can do no wrong. Or can he? Freddie blames no other than her fiance Killian for his downfall, and enlists Freya's help to prove it. Now Freya doesn't know who to believe or trust.
And for the first time in--well, forever, really--Ingrid is also busy in love. Matt Noble, the handsome and charming police detective, has won her heart. But can romance work between a virgin witch and a mortal who doesn't believe in magic? Things get even more complicated when it appears Ingrid is harboring the prime suspects in Matt's police investigation.
To add to the chaos, a dead spirit is attempting to make contact with Joanna--but does it mean to bring harm or help? Joanna asks her sort-of ex-husband Norman to help figure it out, only to accidentally invite him to a Thanksgiving dinner with a dapper gentleman she's recently begun dating.
As the witches pull together to discover the serpent within their midst and the culprit behind Freddie's imprisonment, everything is thrown into peril. Will the discovery come too late to save those they love most?
Melissa de la Cruz weaves all this and more in a blockbuster sequel that is not to be missed by her fans, and one that is sure to enchant new readers of the series.

Book Description

July 10, 2012

Gigi Levangie Grazer, the New York Times bestselling author of The Starter Wife, returns with a hilarious and spirited tale of love—both lost and found.

L.A. is no place for widows. This is what forty-four-year-old Hannah Bernal quickly discovers after the tragic death of her handsome and loving husband, John. Misery and red-rimmed eyes are little tolerated in the land of the beautiful. But life stumbles on: Hannah’s sweet three-year-old daughter, Ellie, needs to be dropped off at her overpriced preschool, while Hannah herself must get back to work in order to pay the bills on “Casa Sugar,” the charming Spanish-styled bungalow they call home.

Fortunately, Hannah has her “Grief Team” for emotional support: earth mother and fanatical animal lover Chloe, who finds a potential blog post in every moment; aspiring actress Aimee, who has her cosmetic surgeon on speed dial; and Jay, Hannah’s TV producing partner, who has a penchant for Mr. Wrong. But after a series of mishaps and bizarre occurrences, one of which finds Hannah in a posh Santa Monica jail cell, her friends start to fear for her sanity. To make matters worse, John left their financial affairs in a disastrous state. And when Hannah is dramatically fired from her latest producing gig, she finds herself in danger of losing her house, her daughter, and her mind.

One night, standing in her backyard under a majestic avocado tree, in the throes of grief, Hannah breaks down and asks, “Why?” The answer that comes back—Why not?—begins an astounding journey of discovery and transformation that leads Hannah to her own truly extraordinary life after death.

Giveaway - Guest Post - SHERRYL WOODS author of Midnight Promises @MIRAEditors

Sherryl Woods (photo from website)

Whether you're a longtime reader of my Sweet Magnolias series or just discovering it with the latest trilogy -- Midnight Promises (July, MIRA Books), Catching Fireflies (August, MIRA Books) and Where Azaleas Bloom (September, MIRA Books) -- you probably know that these books are about the deep bonds of women, whether lifelong friends or newly-acquainted.

The original Sweet Magnolias -- Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue -- were childhood friends who stuck by each other through thick and thin, but over the course of the series, just like all of us in real life, they've welcomed newcomers to the fold. They've even become multi-generational as their daughters and even a few local seniors have been included in their famed margarita nights.

For someone like me, who grew up in a suburb of Washington, DC where military families and, therefore, friends came and went, friendships have always been vitally important in my life. I hang onto the people I love for dear life, keeping in touch despite time and distance.

Lately, though, I've been through a period when the loss of dear friends has been more permanent. I have to say it's come as a disconcerting shock to realize that I'm now at an age when I'm more likely to lose someone to death than a cross-country move.

This is a transition we all must face eventually. As a minister friend points out to me, the cycle of life is inevitable. That doesn't mean we have to like it, but we do have to learn to deal with the grief and move on. And it's at times like these that the friends left behind mean more than ever. They provide support and comfort and much-needed laughter amid the tears.

Over the years I've been around many people who've lived well into their 80s and 90s. One thing they've all agreed on is that outliving their contemporaries is tough. From them, I've learned to make a decided effort to include a lot of younger people in my circle of friends, just as the Sweet Magnolias have done in these books. It's something you might want to consider as well.

Because as our lives inevitably change, as people come and go whatever the reason, friendships matter more than ever. I hope your circle of friends is large, that it includes young and old, and that you remember each and every day how those you love enrich your life. In other words, I wish you your own group of Sweet Magnolias!

Midnight Promises

 June 26, 2012

When Elliott Cruz first courted struggling single mom Karen Ames, it it was a romance worthy of any Sweet Magnolia fantasy. The sexy personal trainer made it his mission to restore Karen's strength—physical and emotional—and to charm her children.

Now, a few years into the marriage, colliding dreams threaten to tear a few years into the marriage, colliding dreams threaten to tear them them apart. Elliott's desire to finance the business opportunity of a lifetime with their hard-earned "baby money" stirs Karen's deep-rooted financial insecurities. It's the discovery that their brother-in-law is cheating on Elliott's sister—and thinks it's justified—that puts their irreconcilable differences into perspective. Will their own loving fidelity be a bond so strong they can triumph against all odds?

Catching Fireflies
July 31, 2012 The Sweet Magnolias
When bullying threatens to destroy a teen's life, painful memories resurface for dedicated high school teacher Laura Reed and pediatrician J. C. Fullerton. With the support of the Sweet Magnolias, they they bring the town together to ensure that a promising student's future isn't ruined. And to establish once and for all that bullying has no place in Serenity, South Carolina. Both J.C.'s and Laura's passion for the cause is deeply personal, and their growing feelings for each other are just as strong. But with so many secret hurts to overcome, can these two vulnerable lovers find the strength to believe in happily ever after?

Waiting on Wednesday Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks @OliverSacks @AAKnopf

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Book Description

November 6, 2012
From the best-selling author of Musicophilia and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, a provocative investigation into hallucinations—auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory—their many guises, their physiological sources, and their personal and cultural resonances.

Hallucinations, for most people, imply madness. But there are many different types of non-psychotic hallucination caused by various illnesses or injuries, by intoxication—even, for many people, by falling sleep. From the elementary geometrical shapes that we see when we rub our eyes to the complex swirls and blind spots and zigzags of a visual migraine, hallucination takes many forms. At a higher level, hallucinations associated with the altered states of consciousness that may come with sensory deprivation or certain brain disorders can lead to religious epiphanies or conversions. Drawing on a wealth of clinical examples from his own patients as well as historical and literary descriptions, Oliver Sacks investigates the fundamental differences and similarities of these many sorts of hallucinations, what they say about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture's folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all.

About the Author
OLIVER SACKS is a practicing physician and the author of ten books, including The Mind's Eye, Musicophilia,The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and Awakenings (which inspired the Oscar-nominated film). He lives in New York City, where he is a professor of neurology and psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and the first Columbia University Artist.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Zacharel has lost his heavenly army and must now rule a group of fallen angels that resort to their basest instincts.  He is still pure and even though he is a ruthless fighter, he believes in the good of man.  Sent to protect Annabelle, locked away in a mental institution, battling demons that are fighting for her very soul.  Um, I hate to use this word, but she is literally battling those demons, although no one else can see them.  Yeah, and then Paris (you LOTU fans will know him as the lust demon) shows up, so of course he brings out the worst (best?!?) in virginal Zacharel. For those of you expecting a lot of crossover from Gena's other worlds, this is about as far as it goes.  Like Gena's other books, expect to get swept up entirely too quickly in this world of good versus evil and then dying when it ends.

I have been hoping for an adult series of angels since the young adult market has recently been taken by storm with these creatures.  You get all of that mythology along with some really steamy romance that young adult can't touch.  Or course, there is the fun, snarky parts of the characters that peak through but not as much as some of Gena's other series.  This start seems a bit serious but I am anxious to see where this takes me.  Annabelle is one of the best female roles I have read in a long time.  I really hope that she will continue to have small roles in upcoming books.  Her interaction with Zacharel is really special and her strength after being so abused by demons is just stellar. This new series is a must read for any fan of Gena's previous books.

BOOK TRAILER TUESDAY Wicked Nights by Gena Showalter

Check out this Q&A to finds out what makes GENA SHOWALTER cringe? @genashowalter @HQNBooks @booktrib

PLEASE WELCOME GENA SHOWALTER TO BOOKHOUNDS

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

The first Sweet Valley High book. Before that, I hated to read and refused to open a book unless threatened with a month-long grounding. My grades began to slip, and I was eventually held back a year. Desperate to engage my attention, my mother and grandmother took me to the bookstore and read the backs of books to me until that Sweet Valley High book grabbed my attention and refused to let go. I had to know more about those Wakefield twins, so, I went home, read the entire thing and was hooked. Of course, I had to have the second book, then the third and fourth, and so on. I’ve never looked back.

2. What are you reading right now?

I’m not actually reading a work of fiction right now. I’m working on revisions for my upcoming release Last Kiss Goodnight, as well as the rough draft for the second Angels of the Dark book, and I want to keep my focus on those characters.

3. How does your garden grow?

One upon a time, I managed to kill all the plants we owned. I’m no longer allowed to go near a garden. There’s even a restraining order, and it’s strictly enforced.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

This is going to sound weird but my last Google was “vicious phrases.” I had a good reason, I promise!

5. What makes you cringe?

I hate, hate, hate when I hurt someone’s feelings. I want to curl under the covers, hide and cry. Seriously. I have a compulsion to make things right.

Book Description

June 26, 2012
In her most emotionally charged novel to date, New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf explores the unspoken events that shape a community, the ties between parents and their children and how the fragile normalcy of our everyday life is so easily shattered.
In the midst of a sudden spring snowstorm, an unknown man armed with a gun walks into an elementary school classroom. Outside the school, the town of Broken Branch watches and waits.
Officer Meg Barrett holds the responsibility for the town's children in her hands. Will Thwaite, reluctantly entrusted with the care of his two grandchildren by the daughter who left home years earlier, stands by helplessly and wonders if he has failed his child again. Trapped in her classroom, Evelyn Oliver watches for an opportunity to rescue the children in her care. And thirteen-year-old Augie Baker, already struggling with the aftermath of a terrible accident that has has brought her to Broken Branch, will risk her own safety to protect her little brother.
As tension mounts with each passing minute, the hidden fears and grudges of the small town are revealed as the people of Broken Branch race to uncover the identity of the stranger who holds their children hostage.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Told in five different points of view, this story about an armed assault in a school, will really take your breath away.  When a lone, unknown gunman invades a classroom at a local school in Iowa, the police converge to rescue the children and their teacher when they are trapped.  Holly has sent her two children to live with her father after an while she is in the hospital recovering from burns and she swore she would never see him again.  Augie, her teen daughter has escaped but remains behind to rescue her little brother and shows courage beyond her years.  Will, father and grandfather, has only one thing in mind: find Augie and PJ and not worry their recovering mother.  Mrs. Oliver, the teacher, almost ready to retire, relies on her years of experience, tries to keep the gunman from harming her children.  Meg, a police officer, now requested to appear by the gun man, tries to figure out who this man is and how she can save the children.

As their stories intertwine, a portrait of the man holding them hostage is painted with bare brush strokes.  It takes almost the whole book to find out exactly who he is and why he has done this horrible deed.  Although he is briefly mentioned at the beginning of the story, you will have a hard time connecting the dots until that very end.  I was ripping through this book in order to find out the answer and then had to go back to see if I missed any clues!  Meg and Mrs. Oliver became the true focus of the story and I admire the tenacity and fortitude of these women to think clearly in a devastating situation.  The man responsible seemed to have a history of wrong thinking (putting that mildly) but you won't know that until the very end.  Even after I put this book down, I still thought about his motives and if his actions were created from sort of mental defect.  If you are a fan of Jodi Picoult, you are going to love this tightly knit drama.

GIVEAWAY- Q&A with ALMA KATSU author of The Reckoning @gallerybooks @almakatsu

PLEASE WELCOME ALMA KATSU TO BOOKHOUNDS!

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

I don't know if it was the first, but a picture book called HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME stands out in memory. It was based on a folktale from Africa or Indonesia--some place that would've seemed exotic to child fifty years ago--about three creatures (a monkey, a pig and I forget the third) who make a bet with a stranger to see which of them can tell the tallest tale. Being a storyteller now, this story is near and dear to my heart. I think I started reading by myself when I was pretty young because my mother, who is Japanese, didn't read English and my father wasn't one for books, but somehow I devoured a lot of picture books.

2. What are you reading right now?

I'm reading HIDE ME AMONG THE GRAVES, Tim Powers' latest novel, on my NOOK. I have BRING UP THE BODIES by Hilary Mantel waiting on my iPod. I adored WOLF HALL and can't wait to get into this one, but I only listen to audiobooks on long car trips.

3. How does your garden grow?

If you mean my real garden, is grows rather poorly as I ignore the outdoors as much as possible. We only have a tiny bit of yard surrounding our house and it's completely out of control. The next step is to move into a hotel and have no yard work whatsoever. (That's my husband's suggestion, by the way.)

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

I wish I could remember. It was something really esoteric. Before that, I was doing research on the Boxer Rebellion for a chapter in The Descent, the last book in the trilogy. I was shocked to find out that there's a band called the Boxer Rebellion. They're probably wildly popular, aren't they? That's how out of touch I am.

5. What makes you cringe?

Listening to myself speak.
