BLOG TOUR GIVEAWAY REVIEW: The Minefields by Steven C. Eisner

EXCERPT:

I held my dad’s hand more firmly. I shifted his pillows. Fed him ice chips with my fingers. I asked his surly nurse three times for some Sprite, which had become my father’s drink of choice since his health failed. Would ‘Mother Teresa’ actually bring it?

Each day a new part of the first chapter will be post on the tour.

Book Description

From an early age, Sam Spiegel single-mindedly pursued an entrepreneurial path that prepared him to transform a small-time ad agency into a regional powerhouse with national ambitions. A couple decades later, Sam had achieved almost everything he ever dreamed possible as the ad agency's rainmaker, fountainhead, and unflappable pursuer of success. One final goal remained: To consolidate his gains by attracting an international advertising conglomerate and cash out. That's when the nation is hit with the most unthinkable tragedy, and Sam begins to take stock of his own life, finding that he is growing weary of the relentless hunt. Unsatisfied in his marriage and embroiled in a mind-boggling professional crisis, everything Sam had achieved is put at risk.

MY THOUGHTS
LIKED IT

Sam starts out as a entrepreneur at a young age, organizing teen dances for cash and later taking over his father's advertising agency during the go-go Sixties.  The story goes full circle through his entire life hitting the highs and lows like his father dying (loved the dad's grouchiness), relationships, partying and then the downfall.  The are familial insights into Sam's character and the pressure he receives and those same pressures he puts on himself to succeed.  I have only watched a few episodes of Mad Men, but you can see the author is a fan since there are similarities between the characters and there are a lot of characters in this book.  The writing has a great balance of humor and pathos while telling the tale of one man's life.
