Conquering the Past and Creating the Future
By Michele Rosenthal

April 2012; $14.95 US; 978-0-6155-4994-1

Description
Before the World Intruded is one woman's quest to triumph over trauma -- and the very unexpected way she did it. At the age of thirteen Michele Rosenthal survived such a rare, life-threatening illness none of her doctors had actually seen a case. Out of the hospital and making a full recovery, she believed she only looked toward the future so she could escape the trauma in her past. Twenty-five years later, however, the young girl had become a woman imprisoned by memories, fear and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

In a bid to reclaim her life and heal her soul Michele boldly left the world she knew in search of a self she could barely imagine. From New York City to South Florida she traveled on an odyssey that took her from the depths of despair to the heights of joy, from her kitchen floor to the dance floor, from a child frozen in helplessness to a woman who is powerful, courageous and free. In her transformation lie the seeds for anyone who wants to conquer the past and create the future. This transcendent book shows what can happen when you discover who you are and then choose who you most deeply want to be.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

By the time Michele turned 25, she had experienced more health issues than most people have in a lifetime.  Diagnosed with a condition so rare that her doctors struggled to treat her, let alone cure her, she manages to conquer the illness but is left with being traumatized to the point where she isn't quite sure who she is anymore.   There is one part that really got to me:  she finds that the doctors may have concealed a drug allergy which possibly caused some of her conditions.  She really didn't have a chance to grow up normally and suffered from depression and post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD).  The author also must deal with the devastating conditions of Epstein Barr Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

If you think that all of the medical agonies turn this book into a real downer, don't.  The book is written in a conversational style that is easy to read.  You really want her to get better and move on with her life.  This story is really something that needs to be told right now to get people involved in their own care and take charge of their destiny.  I was really amused when she talked about overcoming her insomnia and learning to dance.  I think everyone suffers from insomnia at one time or another and the fact that she used the time to write and really understand herself proves she is much stronger than any disease.  I think I need to learn how to dance!

  2. Thanks for the encouragement to take an active part in one's own health care -- be one's own advocate. I have a chronic illness and continually have to remind myself to "put me first."
