PLEASE WELCOME DAWN TO BOOKHOUNDS

Dawn Ryder is my naughty inner child. Under my pen name of Mary Wine, I write a lot of historical. Part of writing those books is understanding the clothing of the period. I love to sew period garments and have even adopted a treadle powered machine because I was curious how it would feel to make some of my garments without electricity. When I am doing that, the entire house is a non-electric zone. It really changes the mood. Here’s a shot of me in costume.

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

My mother was a Liberian. She often had to work night shifts at the public library and took me along. Reading came hard for me but boredom drove me to work my way through the only entertainment at hand…books. I recall discovering the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ books and I recall very clearly when I discovered the romance section. My first romance was by Johanna Lindsey, So Speaks the Heart.

2. What are you reading right now?

Cynthia Eden.

3. How does your garden grow?

Not so great. You see, I live in Southern California’s and we are in an extreme drought at the moment. So I am not watering, which tends to end badly for gardens.

(me too -- all of my rose burnt in the Santa Ana winds)

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

Parrot sexual maturity age.

5. What makes you cringe?

Underwear showing because dudes think it’s cool to let their jeans sag to their buns.

$25 Giveaway Interview GODDESS BORN by KARI EGREN @toobusyreading @CarinaPress

Goddess Born Tour

goddess born cover

Goddess Born

 Pennsylvania, 1730

Selah Kilbrid keeps a dangerous secret: she has the power to heal.

A direct descendent of the Celtic goddess Brigid, it’s Selah’s sacred duty to help those in need. But as the last of the Goddess Born living in the New World, she learned from an early age to keep her supernatural abilities hidden. The Quaker community of Hopewell has always been welcoming, but there’s no doubt they would see her hanged if her gift was revealed.

When a prominent minister threatens to try her with witchcraft unless she becomes his wife, Selah has only one hope—that her betrothed, a distant cousin from Ireland, arrives as planned. Marrying Samuel would keep her secret safe, preserve her sacred bloodline, and protect her from being charged as a witch.

But when news of Samuel’s death reaches the Colonies, Selah is truly on her own. Terrified, she faces an impossible choice—forfeit her powers and marry the loathsome Nathan? Or find an imposter to pose as her husband and preserve her birthright?

2013 RWA Golden Heart© Finalist
2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semifinalist

ABNA Publisher Weekly Reviewer
Set in the colony of Pennsylvania in 1730, this riveting novel begins as 18-year-old Selah Kilbrid runs into Quaker minister Nathan Crowley, a man who “labor[ed] under the delusion that [Selah] would soon be his wife” despite the fact that she was betrothed to a man on his way to America from Ireland. Nathan tells Selah that if she refuses him, he will have her “charged as a witch” because of her ability to heal the sick. To avoid Nathan’s plan to marry her the following Sunday, she leaves for Philadelphia to wait for the arrival of her betrothed and marry him before returning home. In Philadelphia, she discovers that her betrothed has died at sea. She then purchases Henry, an indentured servant, and convinces him to pose as her husband and help protect her from Nathan. As the story continues, the reader learns of Selah’s family history and the powers she possesses; Selah is half human, half goddess. It's important that her secret stay safe, because if discovered, she could be killed. The characters are well developed and relatable; the reader empathizes with Selah and her plight. The fast-paced plot is exciting and keeps the reader guessing and in suspense. The end leaves room for a sequel, which, after such a tremendous beginning, would be anxiously awaited. A clear winner!

Kari Edgren did not dream of becoming a writer. Instead, she dreamed of everything else and was often made to stay inside during kindergarten recess to practice her letters. Despite doting parents and a decent school system, Ms. Edgren managed to make it through elementary school having completed only one book cover to cover – The Box Car Children, which she read approximately forty-seven times. Things improved during high school, but not until she read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in college, did she truly understand the power of a book.

Ms. Edgren aspires to be a Vulcan, a world-acclaimed opera singer, and two inches taller. She resides in the Pacific NW where she spends a great deal of time torturing her husband and children with strange food and random historical facts. Ms. Edgren hasn’t stopped dreaming, but has finally mastered her letters enough to put the stories on paper.

PLEASE WELCOME KARI TO BOOKHOUNDS ya

I am currently reading two books: An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski, and The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

Images of Strep Throat. It wasn't pretty.

5. What makes you cringe?

Excessive profanity. Rude people. Over the top PDA. Thong bikini bottoms -- they just look so uncomfortable.

Review CHINA DOLLS by Lisa See @Lisa_See @randomhouse

An exciting new novel set in the "Chop Suey Circuit" of San Francisco right before World War II, from the beloved bestselling author of Snowflower and the Secret Fan and Shanghai Girls.

In 1938, Ruby, Helen and Grace, three girls from very different backgrounds, find themselves competing at the same audition for showgirl roles at San Francisco's exclusive "Oriental" nightclub, the Forbidden City. Grace, an American-born Chinese girl has fled the Midwest and an abusive father. Helen is from a Chinese family who have deep roots in San Francisco's Chinatown. And, as both her friends know, Ruby is Japanese passing as Chinese. At times their differences are pronounced, but the girls grow to depend on one another in order to fulfill their individual dreams. Then, everything changes in a heartbeat with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Suddenly the government is sending innocent Japanese to internment camps under suspicion, and Ruby is one of them. But which of her friends betrayed her?

MY THOUGHTS - LOVED IT

Three women become fast friends while working as chorus girls in a nightclub in prewar San Francisco.  Told in alternative viewpoints between, Helen, Ruby and Grace, these girls related how they become entertainers in China Town and the disadvantages each has to overcome.   Each woman has an almost horrific background and as you learn more about them, you will end up rooting for them to success and how hard it is for women to be more than property, especially in Asian cultures.

Helen, is the "good girl" but there is a distant sadness in her background and you don't find out until the end exactly what has happened to her.  Ruby, is fast and lives life just for pleasure, although she also has a secret to hide.  Grace, too, has issues, and her story probably connected with me the most.  They all betray each other, but remain friends and seem to always have each other's back.  Their lives become entwined and they story they share has needed to be told for a long time.  The discrimination and the horror of war is not lost on these women.

There are so many themes that are covered in this story.  Feminism, cultural identity and family are just a few of the ideas covered.  These women were going out on their own before Rosie the Riveter become a thing in WWII.  I had never heard of the Chop Suey Circuit and found this look at the entertainment industry fascinating.  I have been a fan of Lisa See since I first read Snowflower and the Secret Fan, I have since read all of her work and each novel is better than the last.

When Hailey crashes a Half-Life after party, she expects to find the bastard who knocked up her little sister. Instead she meets the sexy front-man who agrees to give her access to his crew if she gives him access to her body.

Hailey and Lock push each other’s limits… Against the penthouse window. Backstage. In the limo and on the elevator. But as the contract counts down, neither are ready for the party to end.

PURCHASE

Excerpt:
Lock managed not to jump the sexy little Sunday school teacher the second her pen left the paper. Her hand had been shaking as she’d signed, and she wasn’t ready for sex. At least not the way he did sex. So he showed her into the restroom and let her freshen up. Meanwhile he conferred with the concierge to get her bag brought up and her car moved to a VIP spot.
When she emerged from the bathroom, he knew she was ready. He knew by the fresh lipstick on her full lips and the resolved set of her chin. But most of all he knew because of the flicker of curiosity in her eyes. Under the fear, she wanted to know what came next.
He crooked his finger and beckoned her to him.
Her breathing was shallow, her cheeks flushed, and she kept running her fingers through her hair, touching herself. That long blonde hair cascaded around her face in a messy tumble. Bed head, and they hadn’t been anywhere near a bed. Wouldn’t be near one anytime soon if he had his way. Which he would. This was his show.
She tugged the hem of her short skirt so it covered a sliver more thigh, drew her shoulders back, and crossed the room, steady on her bare feet. She should be plucking daisies, not padding across the plush carpet of his penthouse suite. “Your wish is my command.”
No more preamble. If she was really going to do this, he’d know now for sure. “I’m going to fuck you against that window over there, and I’m not going to be nice about it. Do you like to hurt, Hailey?”
Her name was a weapon on his lips. A sharp thing he could use to lash her. Every time he said it, he watched her tense. This time she wobbled, her answering nod barely perceptible, her coltish legs giving way under the weight of his regard. And he liked it.
She wanted this thrill, and at the moment finding her sister’s baby daddy didn’t have much to do with it. Her eyes held wariness and guilt—but most of all, excitement. As if his proposition had jolted her awake. More awake than she’d ever been in her drowsy little East Podunk life, he’d lay money on it.
He’d woken up on stage like that, the whiskey haze parting long enough for fear to creep in, adrenaline spiking into his bloodstream as he fumbled for an instant and then…click. Everything slipping into its proper place. The music. The band. The crowd. All of it more alive, more real, brighter and sharper because he’d come so close to disaster.
Do you like to hurt, Hailey? He’d asked her, and she could only nod.
He’d hurt her so good she’d give voice to that desire before he was through. She knew it. He knew it. The subtext breathed in the air around them, a living thing, that damned contract come to life. She wants this. She wants the lurid celeb fantasy. The shock, the pulse-pounding vibrancy that only exists on the edge of a bad decision.
He’d take her there.
“Take off your clothes,” he said, a little too harshly, his urgency coming out as hard-edged gruffness.
It didn’t scare her away. She wants that too. She fingered the button of her cardigan, uncertain, and then popped them all in a rush, exposing a silver tank that dipped low over her cleavage. Fuck. Surprisingly lush curves on her willowy frame, and smooth, pale skin.
He shifted in his seat, imagining his cock between her breasts. Making them slick, squeezing them together, and thrusting, thrusting, thrusting until he came all over her neck. Jesus, he hadn’t even seen them yet. She put a hand to her throat as if she could read his mind. As if every dirty thought he’d ever had was flashing on his face. And she knew. Why was she taking so fucking long to undress?

Giveaway Sweepstakes! THE GLASS KITCHEN by LINDA FRANCIS LEE @LindaFrancisLee @StMartinsPress

With the glass kitchen, Linda Francis Lee has served up a novel that is about the courage it takes to follow your heart and be yourself. A true recipe for life.

Portia Cuthcart never intended to leave Texas. Her dream was to run the Glass Kitchen restaurant her grandmother built decades ago. But after a string of betrayals and the loss of her legacy, Portia is determined to start a new life with her sisters in Manhattan . . . and never cook again. But when she moves into a dilapidated brownstone on the Upper West Side, she meets twelve-year-old Ariel and her widowed father Gabriel, a man with his hands full trying to raise two daughters on his own. Soon, a promise made to her sisters forces Portia back into a world of magical food and swirling emotions, where she must confront everything she has been running from. What seems so simple on the surface is anything but when long-held secrets are revealed, rivalries exposed, and the promise of new love stirs to life like chocolate mixing with cream. The Glass Kitchen is a delicious novel, a tempestuous story of a woman washed up on the shores of Manhattan who discovers that a kitchen—like an island—can be a refuge, if only she has the courage to give in to the pull of love, the power of forgiveness, and accept the complications of what it means to be family.
