Immersed tour

Immersed NewImmersed by Jennifer Griffith
Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever.
But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest.
Until… Erik.
Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

Jennifer Griffith studied French, German, Japanese, and a wee bit of Spanish in her school days. Her grandmother was Norwegian, and Jennifer grew up with lots of Scandinavian traditions floating around, including fabulous cardamom laced cookies called Krumkaker, made on a fancy waffle iron. However, she’d never dream of trying to teach someone any of those languages. And she might botch the cookies. Instead, she writes novels in English, drives her five kids a million places, and laughs with her husband, who came up with the plot for Immersed because he’s just a cool muse like that.

Interview with KATE MORETTI author of BINDS THAT TIE @KateMoretti1 @RAPublishing

Love ties. Murder binds.

Maggie never felt as though she belonged until Chris Stevens showed her what true happiness meant. Ten years into their marriage, miscarriages and infidelities have scarred them both. Despite their perfect-couple image, Maggie can’t look at Chris with anything but resentment. When a charismatic stranger offers the opportunity for a little harmless flirtation, she jumps into the game.

But charm soon turns to malice, and a deadly split-second decision forces Maggie and Chris onto a dangerous path fraught with secrets, lies, and guilt. With no one else to turn to—no one she dares trust—Maggie will ultimately learn just how binding marital ties can be.

There is a giveaway on the publisher's website HERE

Kate Moretti lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids, and a dog. She's worked in the pharmaceutical industry for ten years as a scientist, and has been an avid fiction reader her entire life.

She enjoys traveling and cooking, although with two kids, a day job, and writing, she doesn't get to do those things as much as she'd like.

Her lifelong dream is to buy an old house with a secret passageway.

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

Judy Blume’s Freckle Juice. My entire childhood was molded by Judy Blume.

2. What are you reading right now?

Grunge Gods and Graveyards by Kimberly G Giarratano. It’s a YA ghost story set in the 90’s, which is my decade. I was a teenager in the 90’s, with all the Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I’m loving the pop-culture references and remembering what it felt like to be an angsty teen growing up in the grunge years. It’s so much fun!

3. How does your garden grow?

With abandon. My garden is Darwinian. Survival of the fittest. The mint usually wins. It’s like the world’s slowest, most boring race.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

How to make a newsletter.

5. What makes you cringe?

When people say “Nowadays” with a great big sigh. Like the current times we live in are hopeless and any time before right now was some kind of halcyon era. The world is actually getting better, it’s just that there’s so much more information available, and unfortunately, positivity isn’t as headline grabbing. But global poverty is actually on the decline, as is extreme population growth. There are a higher percentage of educated women than there have ever been in the history of the world, and considering the global population is higher than it’s ever been, that’s saying a lot. Do I think we can all just dust off our hands and say, All done now! Humanity’s fixed! Nah. But the hopeless kind of attitude makes me cringe. I prefer to know we’re better and to think “We’re still not there. Keep moving.”

Giveaway Review SEE YOU IN HELL by DEMELZA CARLTON @DemelzaCarlton #BlogTour @candacemom2two

See You in Hell (Mel Goes to Hell) by Demelza Carlton

 Book Description:

Hate your job? Try working in HELL!

Melody Angel takes a job as a temp at the HELL Corporation. Surrounded by eternal bureaucracy gone mad, demons who love making life miserable, and dying for a decent coffee, it may take a miracle for Mel's mission to succeed. She must find out what evil plans the Lord of Lies has up his sleeve and stop him, using any means necessary. Lucifer and his minions are out to take over the world, but there's more than money at stake when the Devil drives.

Adding trouble and temptation to Mel's job is Luce Iblis, the damnably hot CEO, who has set his smouldering eyes on the new office angel and is determined to claim her, body and soul.

Can ultimate evil and angelic perfection escape a limbo of desire and find a paradise of their own?
Author Bio:

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.
She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.
Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.
The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by her suspense thriller Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.

MY THOUGHTS -- LOVED IT

Melody Angel travels the world, putting out fires started by the demons of Hell, namely, Lucifer, who is rumored to be returning to Earth even though there is a ban on that.  Mel, has been convinced to take a temp job at the Health, Environment,Life and  Lands Corporation or HELL Corp.  as an inside source of information and to keep tabs on Lucifer.  The story is filled with double entendre, sly observations and witty dialogue.  As Mel winds her way through the corporation working for Lilith (yes, that one) and figuring out if Luce Iblis is actual the devil in disguise, she proves that nice doesn't equal a pushover.

The interactions of Mel with the other office workers is sometimes filled with a touch of contempt but done in such a hilarious manner that it is never putting them down.  As an angel, I would have expected Mel to smite them all with a fiery sword, instead she kills them with wit and kindness.  Luce is a complicated character but overall contains every male stereotype of a male magnified to the nth degree.  I really enjoyed this light-hearted read and can't wait for the next installment.

Book Trailer Contest for THE MAGICIAN'S LAND by LEV GROSSMAN @leverus @VikingBooks

Would You Like to Be in a Trailer for The Magician’s Land With a Bunch of Famous Writers?

I’m serious. This is not a theoretical question.

click HERE for all of the details

This ends on Friday, so hurry!

Here’s the idea: I’m going to put together a video of the first few paragraphs ofThe Magician’s Land being read aloud. But I’m not going to read them. You’re going to read them.
It works like this. I’ve split the reading up into individual sentences. They’re at the bottom of this blog post. Each sentence needs a reader. If you’re up for it, pick a sentence and make a video of yourself reading it aloud and then send the video to me at themagiciansland@gmail.com. (I recommend using wetransfer.comfor files over 25 MB). When we’ve got all the sentences covered, an actual video editor will stitch the videos together and make it all look pretty. The result: a crowdsourced book trailer.
Boom. Pretty simple, really. But there’s also a twist. And a catch.
The twist is that I’ve asked some of my writer-friends to read sentences too. There’s going to be some cameos. I’ll announce names in a couple of weeks, but I think it’s fair to say that these are writers whom you know and love. I certainly know and love them. They’re definitely the sort of people one wants to be in a trailer with.
The catch is that I’ve got a limited number of sentences to go round. I don’t know how many people are going to want to do this, but we’ll probably end up having to make some choices about which videos to use. So think about fun/creative ways to do your reading. You could read in a tree. Or in costume. Or underwater. You could act out your sentence, or sing it, or make an animated short out of it. Not that any of this is mandatory, but fair warning: if we get a lot of submissions we’ll probably use the funnest ones first.
If you’d like to be part of this, scroll down for a list of the sentences to choose from. We’re going to try to wrap up production by June 1, so send your videos in before then.
That e-mail address again: themagiciansland@gmail.com.
And here are the sentences that need reading. The ones in brackets have already been claimed for a Celebrity Writer Cameo, so just choose from the non-bracketed ones:
[1. The letter had said to meet in a bookstore.]
2. It wasn’t much of a night for it: early March, drizzling and cold but not quite cold enough for snow.
3. It wasn’t much of a bookstore either.
4. Quentin spent fifteen minutes watching it from a bus shelter at the edge of the empty parking lot, rain drumming on the plastic roof and making the asphalt shine in the streetlights.
[5. Not one of your charming, quirky bookstores, with a ginger cat on the windowsill and an eccentric, bewhiskered proprietor behind the counter.]
6. This was just another strip-mall outpost of a struggling chain, squeezed in between a nail salon and a party City, twenty minutes outside Hackensack on the New Jersey turnpike.
7. The cashier didn’t look up from his phone when the door jingled.
[8. Inside you could still hear the noise of cars on the wet road, like long strips of paper tearing, one after another.]
[9. The only unexpected touch was a wire bird-cage in one corner, but where you would have expected a parrot or a cockatoo inside there was a fat blue- black bird instead.]
10. That’s how un-charming this store was: it had a crow in a cage.
[11. Quentin didn’t care.]
[12. It was a bookstore, and he felt at home in book-stores, and he hadn’t had that feeling much lately.]
13. He pushed his way back through the racks of greeting cards and cat calendars, back to where the actual books were, his glasses steaming up and his coat dripping on the thin carpet.
[14. It didn’t matter where you were, if you were in a room full of books you were at least halfway home.]
15. The store should have been empty, coming up on nine o’clock on a cold rainy Thursday night, but instead it was half full of people.
[16. They browsed the shelves silently, each one on his or her own, slowly wandering the aisles like sleepwalkers.]
[17. A jewel-faced girl with a pixie cut was reading Dante in Italian.]
[18. A tall boy with large curious eyes who couldn’t have been older than sixteen was absorbed in a tom Stoppard play.]
[19. A middle-aged black man with elfin cheekbones stood staring at the biographies through thick, iridescent glasses.]
[20. You would almost have thought they’d come there to buy books.]
[21. But Quentin knew better.]
p.s. By the way this whole idea was inspired by an amazing project called Star Wars Uncut which is really worth checking out, and might be useful if you’re looking for inspiration

Giveaway Spotlight THE LEMON ORCHARD by LUANNE RICE @LuanneRice @penguinusa

The Lemon Orchard by Luanne Rice

Paperback release: May 27, 2014

the-lemon-orchard-by-luanne-rice-paperback-medium

Year after year, Luanne Rice’s fans eagerly await her next book. Their enthusiasm is soon to be rewarded with The Lemon Orchard, Rice’s romantic new love story between two people from seemingly different worlds.

In the five years since Julia last visited her aunt and uncle’s home in Malibu, her life has been turned upside down by her daughter’s death. She expects to find nothing more than peace and solitude as she house-sits with only her dog, Bonnie, for company. But she finds herself drawn to the handsome man who oversees the lemon orchard. Roberto expertly tends the trees, using the money to support his extended Mexican family. What connection could these two people share? The answer comes as Roberto reveals the heartbreaking story of his own loss—a pain Julia knows all too well, but for one striking difference: Roberto’s daughter was lost but never found. And despite the odds he cannot bear to give up hope.

Set in the sea and citrus-scented air of the breathtaking Santa Monica Mountains, The Lemon Orchard is an affirming story about the redemptive power of compassion and the kind of love that seems to find us when we need it most.

Giveaway Q&A Review THE WIDOW WALTZ by SALLY KOSLOW @PlumeBooks @sallykoslow

Book Description

 May 27, 2014

Georgia Waltz has things many people only dream of: a plush Manhattan apartment overlooking Central Park, a Hamptons beach house, valuable jewels and art, two bright daughters, and a husband she adores, even after decades of marriage. It’s only when Ben suddenly drops dead from a massive coronary while training for the New York City Marathon that Georgia discovers her husband—a successful lawyer—has left them nearly penniless. Their wonderland was built on lies.

As the family attorney scours emptied bank accounts, Georgia must not only look for a way to support her family, she needs to face the revelation that Ben was not the perfect husband he appeared to be, just as her daughters—now ensconced back at home with secrets of their own—have to accept that they may not be returning to their lives in Paris and at Stanford subsidized by the Bank of Mom and Dad. As she uncovers hidden resilience, Georgia’s sudden midlife shift forces her to consider who she is and what she truly values. That Georgia may also find new love in the land of Spanx and stretch marks surprises everyone—most of all, her.

Sally Koslow’s fourth novel is deftly told through the alternating viewpoints of her remarkable female protagonists as they plumb for the grit required to reinvent their lives. Inspiring, funny, and deeply satisfying, The Widow Waltz explores in a profound way the bonds between mothers and daughters, belligerent siblings, skittish lovers, and bitter rivals as they discover the power of forgiveness, and healing, all while asking, “What is family, really?”

Biography
Sally Koslow is the author of THE WIDOW WALTZ, her recently released fourth novel, which Library Journal recently called "page-turning" and "well-written," and SLOUCHING TOWARD ADULTHOOD: How To Let Go So Your Kids Can Grow Up, now available in paperback, which has been optioned by NBC for sitcom development.

Sally's second novel, THE LATE, LAMENTED MOLLY MARX, became a besteller in Germany (ICH, MOLLY MARX, KURZLICH VERSTORBEN) as well as a Book Pick by Target, who selected her third novel, WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE, as an Emerging Writer Book. Her debut novel, LITTLE PINK SLIPS, was inspired by her long career as the editor-in-chief of iconic McCalls Magazine, which was taken over by Rosie O'Donnell. Her books have been published in a dozen countries. Most are available on Kindle as well as in audiobook form.

Sally often writes essays and articles for magazine including More, O, the Oprah Magazine; Real Simple; Ladies Home Journal; Good Housekeeping and Reader's Digest as well as websites including the Huffington Post, Next, and Grandpaents.com. 1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

We had piles of Little Golden Books that I gobbled up as I learned to read in first grade. They were a great escape from the Dick and Jane series. My older brother is Dick and I have a younger sister, Betsy; it was a source of humiliation that I had the name of the baby. The shame. My favorite grade school book was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a gift from my well-read grandmother that began a love affair with English novels.

2. What are you reading right now?

Three novels: The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner, for a newly-formed book club of Manhattan writers; Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively, for my book club with former magazine colleagues, and Love & Treasure by Ayelet Waldman.

3. How does your garden grow?

Weeds, sadly, along with some extremely determined hostas plants and hydrangeas and rhododendrons too stubborn to flower.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

The spelling of “hostas”

5. What makes you cringe?

My own writing mistakes. Yesterday, I was proud of a piece I published in TheAtlantic.com until a reader pointed out that I’d spelled “reins” as “reigns.”

MY THOUGHTS LOVED IT

Georgia thinks her marriage is in pretty good shape.  Her husband, Ben, is a successful lawyer and they have a lovely apartment in New York City, a county house as well as a Hampton beach house.  She quit working as a high school English teacher soon after they adopted an adorable little girl from Korea named Nicola. Soon after, Georgia discovers she is pregnant with another daughter, Louisa.  Raising the girls, volunteering and a bit of gardening have become a way of life for Georgia. She thinks she has the perfect life until her husband drops dead from a heart attack while our for a run.  When the estate lawyer tells her she is broke and that Ben has mortgaged everything, she gathers her girls around her and starts to dig her way out of the mess.  Her pampered girls rally to her side and start to give up their selfish ways.

Even though Georgia is devastated that her husband could have left her in such dire straights, she knows she must act and she starts selling off anything not nailed down to avoid bankruptcy.  She also unravels a mysterious life that her husband was leading and it is nothing that she could ever having possibly imaged.  Nicola, her eldest, has never quite fit in with the social set her sister runs in, so she has traveled the world in search of herself.  Louisa, has dropped out of Stanford after hooking up a successful DJ one night, only to turn up pregnant.  All of this drama is dumped on Georgia. who seems to stoically sort through the messes while reconnecting with her lost girls.  At the same time, her daughters encourage her to start her own business sorting out rich kids and their college essays.

I know most women have thought about their husbands dying, either peacefully in their sleep or some other messy form, but if it actually happened to them, they would still be devastated.  This is the case for Georgia, she had no inkling there was anything wrong in her marriage and that the money situation was all taken care of.  She tells her girls, she saw the investment portfolio but later admits that it was years prior and then she stopped paying attention.  Ladies: Pay Attention! She also meets a man that ultimately brings her happiness, even though he is the exact opposite of what Ben was in the looks department.   I got the biggest kick out of her brother, Stephan and his partner Daniel, who pulled her through her darkest times.  *Minor Spoiler Alert:  There is one devastating moment for Georgia when she meets the "other woman" and when all the fact start to overwhelm her, she discovers a strength that allows her to move on.  A true BRAVO moment for me.  Overall, a quick and easy read that is the definition of "beachy".

Giveaway Interview LOST by SARAH BETH DURST @SarahBethDurst @MIRAEditors

Book Description

 June 1, 2014

Brilliantly riveting. * Thought-provoking and stirring. **
Award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst has been praised for her captivating novels that merge the darkly imagined with very real themes of self-discovery and destiny. In The Lost, we'll discover just what it means to lose one's way….
It was only meant to be a brief detour. But then Lauren finds herself trapped in a town called Lost on the edge of a desert, filled with things abandoned, broken and thrown away. And when she tries to escape, impassible dust storms and something unexplainable lead her back to Lost again and again. The residents she meets there tell her she's going to have to figure out just what she's missing—and what she's running from—before she can leave. So now Lauren's on a new search for a purpose and a destiny. And maybe, just maybe, she'll be found….
Against the backdrop of this desolate and mystical town, Sarah Beth Durst writes an arresting, fantastical novel of one woman's impossible journey…and her quest to find her fate.

1.    Do you have a secret talent?

I can summon dolphins with the power of my voice. Okay, that's not true. The dolphins flock to me of their own volition. No, seriously, I don't have a secret talent. I wish I did. But the fact is that I don't even know how to whistle.

2. Is there a song that really reminds you of your book?

"Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men. I have no clue what the song is about, and the lyrics have nothing to do with CONJURED. But the manic feel to the song, the hint of longing, the carnival-like instruments... it reminds me of Eve's life.

3. What was the easiest thing about writing this book?

The visions. In CONJURED, Eve has no memories but lots of bizarre powers. Every time she uses her power, she blacks out and experiences terrifying visions. The visions were so much fun to write. Definitely some of the creepiest sentences ever to crawl out of my fingertips.

4. Is there a word you love to use?

I love the word "azure. " I don't get much chance to use it because, really, how many times can you say, "The sky looks azure tonight, " before you start to sound pretentious? (I can tell you: zero.)

5. Any real or imaginary pets?

One real: my evil cat, Perni. She hates everyone except me (on occasion and only if I do NOT try to pet her belly). I once tried to have an imaginary pet griffin, but Perni ate him.

And here is another interview I did with Sarah

What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

I don’t know if this was the first book, but I remember pouring over THE GIANT GOLDEN BOOK OF ELVES AND FAIRIES by Jane Werner and Garth Williams. It was recently brought back into print, and turning the pages transported me to being the fantasy-obsessed kid who checked under her bed every night for spare dragons and behind rocks for slumbering elves.

What are you reading right now?

I’m reading THE UNNATURALISTS by Tiffany Trent, and I’m loving it.
How does your garden grow?

Poorly. I love flowers, and I dream about a bank covered in tulips and peonies and lilies and irises… but in reality, plants see me coming and promptly wilt. It may have something to do with always forgetting to water them…

What is the last thing you Googled?

The procedure for removing a breathing tube. Also, bandicoot.

What makes you cringe?

Chalk. I can’t stand the feel of chalk. Also, accidentally biting an ice cube.  But more seriously, I cringe whenever anyone talks dismissively about a book they’re reading and enjoying.  If you love it, then it’s a good book! It doesn’t matter if it’s taught in AP English class or not. If it transports you, if it touches your heart, if it makes you laugh or makes you cry, then it has value.  Don’t be ashamed to love the books you love!

Thanks so much for interviewing me!
