Review SIEGE AND STORM by LEIGH BARDUGO @FierceReads @LBardugo

Book Description

June 4, 2013 Grisha Trilogy (Shadow and Bone) (Book 2)

Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can't outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling's game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

About the Author

Leigh Bardugo was born in Jerusalem, gew up in Los Angeles, and graduated from Yale University. These days, she hides out in Hollywood, where she indulges her fondness for glamour, ghouls, and costuming in her other life as a makeup artist in Hollywood. She can occasionally be heard singing with her band, Captain Automatic. Her first novel, Shadow and Bone, was a New York Times best seller.

My Thoughts:

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Alina and Mal have escaped with their lives once again and have disguised themselves enough to earn money in order to get as far away from The Darkling, even if that means using her power to get across the Unsea again.  The story starts off quietly enough with a bit of recovery for the pair as they grow closer and with a bit more romance, but a magical mystery tour is soon upon them.  A privateer - not a pirate- captain named Sturmhond, (YES!  I got somewhat of a dog in this story, even if it is in name only), has a plan and it involved the newly revealed Saint Alina. As Alina finds a book of saints in her pocket that reveals bits and pieces of a map for her to follow.  This is turn leads to an epic quest of discovery for both her and Mal.

As Alina discovers that she has more strength and power than she thought ever possible, she finds that she must make some heart-rendering choices between her and Mal, her country and The Darkling.  Although we don't hear much from him and he appears mostly in Alina's dreams, he is still a strong presence in her life. Poor Mal, it seems all he does is suffer with her decisions and you begin to wonder if the relationship will ever survive.  After several plot twists, some exciting battles, both physical and mental, Alina survives her trial only to find something more life changing to come.

This second installment is as good, if not better, than the first.  Alina grows and begins to fulfill everything she dreams of for her life.  I have to say that there appears to be a bit of a love triangle when Sturmhond - what a fun and delightful captain - challenges her to become everything she can be.  I have high hopes for the final installment.  Parents:  this is best suited for teens since there is some violence, some sexual situations and language.

GEORGETOWN ACADEMY SEASON ONE @GTownAcademy @coliloquy

Georgetown Academy: Season One

Available for the first time in a single volume, the first four books of the Georgetown Academy series have been hailed by Gossip Girl producer, Josh Schwartz, as “Smart, sexy and insanely addictive.” Now it’s your turn to get hooked.

Meet Ellie, Brinley, Evan, and Taryn — Four sophomores at Georgetown Academy, D.C.’s most exclusive private school, where among the exclusive parties and perfectly manicured lawns, student life seems drama-free. But everyone always has something to hide.

THE IT GIRL NEXT DOOR

Everyone wants a piece of Ellie Walker and her Senator mom, but Ellie’s always been happy to cede the spotlight. Kind-hearted, sweet, and half of G.A.’s perfect power couple, Ellie has it all…until her ex-boyfriend, Gabe, moves back to town and turns her world upside down leaving her to choose between love and loyalty.

THE DC PRINCESS

Brinley Madison, of those Madisons, relishes her family’s status as the ultimate D.C. insiders. While her political strategist father plays kingmaker, Brinley maneuvers behind the scenes in school and at home. Brinley knows better than to keep a secret that could hurt her family, but sometimes desire turns to addiction, putting the family reputation at risk.

THE OUTSIDER

Evan Hartnett doesn’t have the typical pedigree of a G.A., student. In fact, she has no pedigree at all. Her academic scholarship may get her access to the classroom, but she’s still on the outside looking in…until a series of unexpected boyfriends rocket her to national attention.

THE CALIFORNIA GIRL

Taryn Reyes’ laid-back, bohemian vibe doesn’t exactly mesh with her new surroundings, but she’s remarkably secure and unconcerned. But after her first run-in with D.C.’s dirty politics, she finds out that keeping her integrity and her heart intact may be harder than she thinks.

SO....this series has quickly become on of my favorites.  You can now purchase the first four as a book bundle for only $9.99 !

Here is a recap of each book:

Brinley, the queen bee of Georgetown Academy, an elite prep school for Washington's elite, is starting off the school year by getting her classmates in social order with the help of her boyfriend, the son of the Vice-President.  Her best friend, Ellie, is the daughter of a powerful senator but her boy friend, Hunter is the son of her mother's political enemy.  Taryn, has just transferred in from California, with her father set to be the first Hispanic President and she is about to learn that the stakes are higher in this backstabbing arena of global power.  Evan is a bookworm that gets her shot as an intern at a highly political television show.

Much like Gossip Girl, this cast has a lot to lose if the the rumors get out of their social circle and could be devastating on a national level for their parents careers.  When Brinley decides to take down newcomer, Taryn by starting a rumor about her trading sex for drugs, she sets off a chain of events that can only end in heartbreak for all involved.  Secretly, I have a death wish for Brinley unless she redeems herself in upcoming installments.  Taryn is so down to earth and you feel like she has been thrown into the deep end of a pool of sharks but I have high hopes for her coming out on top. There are so many little subplots in this first one, that it could take multiple episodes to resolve.

Remember those cool "Choose your own adventure" novels back in grade school?  You had to flip the pages to get to the next section and the story could go in one of many directions depending on the character you chose to follow and what you decide they should do.  Well, this takes that to the next level.  Taking advantage of technology, you can click on a link to pick your character and action!  I admit, I did cheat a bit and read each character's detour.  This is such a fun and quick read that anyone will love to get their hands on. Parents:  there is kissing, mentions of drug use, and some language.

Let's start with Brinley since she is the mean girl with a heart.  The story picks right up where the first one ended and Brinley is quickly loosing control of her dark, deep secret.  I am not going to divulge that since it would ruin the plot.  She does try to help her bestie, Ellie, track down who leaked a picture of her with her mother's worst enemy's son.  The backstory to that relationship will have you reeling.  Evan, the good girl is trying really hard to get in good with supervisor at her internship, but at the same time, she doesn't want to ruin her friends' lives by further her career with their secrets.  Taryn, in a stroke of brilliance, commands all of the attention by accident, and becomes the new *it* girl of Washington DC.

These books are like potato chips, you better have a bunch on hand since you will want to continue reading them well into the night.  I took books two, three and four on a five hour flight and had to go back and read each character's thread because I didn't want to miss a word or viewpoint. The writing in this series is amazing, full of details without being overly wordy.  Reading this series is much like watching a television episode since each installment, everything is paced perfectly.  Now, that I have read everything out so far, it is going to be a long summer until I can get my hands on the next one.

This series just keeps getting better and better! The crew is headed for skiing in Vermont and a break from the media coverage that has worn down even the most hardcore Washington resident that crave that spotlight. Brinley and her parents have circumvented a disaster by going public with her drug abuse and cleaned her up in rapid time. Now with a therapist in her corner, she gains strength to break away from the stranglehold Washington has on her. Ellie has to sit back and watch the love of her life, Gabe slowly get entangled with Taryn. Taryn tries to use Brooks, Brinley's brother, to make him jealous but the whole thing backfires in her face when the unexpected happens. Ellie finally meets Weston, a guy she hopes will take her mind off of Gabe, but is he "all that" or too good to be true?

Well, since this series will be released about every 6 months, it doesn't seem too long to wait, but I really am glad I had a chance to read them all in one sitting. They are that good. The biggest problem that I had was now is that I won't see another installment until next January. SIGH. The character development in this series is just spectacular. Each character becomes deeper and with the chance to read their point of view with the interactive portion of each ebook. I admit that I had to obsessively read each one just to make sure I didn't miss a thing. Parents: this series is best suite for teens since there is language, drug and alcohol use, sexual situations much like any decent teen show on the CW and you will find yourself sneaking them away from your kids.

Well, book three left me hanging a bit when important news breaks that the vice president is going to resign and the race is down to two important players:  Taryn's dad and Ellie's mom.  Will these girls keep it together while under going even more media scrutiny, not to mention intense background checks?  Ellie must decide whether she can live without Gabe as not to ruin her mother's chance at a moment in history, while Taryn is thrown more into the arms of Brinley and her family.  As Taryn's dad has hired Brinley's father to navigate the sharky waters of the nomination, she must learn how to act properly in Washington society.  Brinley has completely turned herself around and while still searching for who released the picture of Gabe and Ellie, she finds that her family is not as caring as she thinks. Evan is now in the in-crowd since her relationship with Hunter is now public, but it all goes awry when she starts thinking with her heart instead of being her usual cautious self.

Wow, just WOW.  This is probably the most fun read ever!  The pacing, character development and dialogue woven in with fashion and location are just phenomenal.    The characters continue to grow and develop and it is really wonderful that you can get the point of view for each interaction with the interactive function in this book.  For adults who wouldn't be caught dead watching the CW, this should be your new guilty pleasure. Fill up your eReader with this series and take off to the beach, but prepare to for the sunburn to come once your forget about the time. Again, Parents, there is language, drug/alcohol use, and sexual situations but nothing worse than what is on television anymore.

Giveaway Character Interview GOODBYE FOR NOW by LAURIE FRANKEL @lauriefrankel @VintageAnchor

Tour

Welcome to Goodbye For Now
Writing Tip Blog Tour!
Glad to have you along.

Today I’m going to offer a piece of advice and an example, but I’m immediately going to walk it back as well. That’s pretty much what my life is like if you want the honest truth. I see both sides of everything always. It makes it very hard to make decisions. Fortunately, writing lends itself to this sort of personality and life approach. There are few hard and fast rules. There’s a lot to be said for being able to see the other side. And the one after that. And the one after that.

Interviewing your own characters can work beautifully to help you get to know them better. The more real, the more well-rounded, the more full, the more human they are to you, the better job you’ll do of writing them that way, and the better characters -- and better book -- you’ll have as a result. I read widely, and I love a wide variety of books that often have very little in common except -- always -- this: they have great characters. I can’t think of any books I love that don’t have good characters. Character is all.

So for instance, Goodbye For Now’s main characters are Sam and Meredith. They are partners in the romantic sense. And they are also partners in the business sense. Early on in Goodbye For Now, they open up a business together called RePose to allow users to email and video chat with their dead loved ones. This creates a predictable stir. People love it. But people -- especially the media -- also have grave (and legitimate) concerns. Quickly, Sam and Meredith are inundated with interview requests from newspapers, television, and magazines. Some appear in the book. Others don’t. But writing them up was still a useful exercise. Here’s a transcript, if you will, from NPR’s never-aired interview with Sam and Meredith:

NPR: Welcome Sam Elling and Meredith Maxwell, creators of the revolutionary new technology RePose. Thank you for joining us.

Meredith: Thank you for having us. We’re delighted to be here.

NPR: As we heard in the introduction, RePose allows users to email, use Facebook or text message or Twitter, and even video chat with their dead loved ones. That’s extraordinary.

Meredith: It is extraordinary. Sam’s background as a software engineer -- and his status as a genius [laughter] -- allowed him to invent a way to analyze someone’s archived electronic output and then create a projection of that person.

NPR: You read old emails and Facebook posts, a person’s Twitter feeds, saved Skype chats, and are able to recreate the person who made them.

Meredith: That’s exactly right. Because we, all of us, produce so much electronic output every day when we use social media or interact online, there’s a lot to go on in order to convincingly recreate us after we can longer do so ourselves.

NPR: So convincingly that the living user cannot tell the difference?

Meredith: Well not quite. It’s a bit more complicated than that. You can’t take your projection in death places it never went in life. You can’t ask it how it liked a new movie that’s out because it won’t have seen it so it won’t have any archived material on that subject. But Sam’s programming does a remarkable job of guessing what your dead loved one would say in an increasingly wide range of situations. It can go places you never imagined. We know a lot about what people will do or say next based on what they did or said before. It works astonishingly well.

NPR: In fact, some people are saying it works too well. You’ve gotten a lot of heat from groups and organizations concerned that you’re somehow tricking users into thinking you’ve resurrected the dead. They think they’re talking to ghosts when it’s really just a computer trick.

Meredith: We have in fact gotten a lot of those concerns, and we understand and appreciate them. We now do a tutorial before new users get started to make sure they understand both the possibilities and the limitations of RePose. We aren’t performing seances. We think our service is in fact quite a bit more honest and more valuable than that.

NPR: You’ve also heard a lot of concern that this technology isn’t helping people mourn but rather hindering their grieving process by drawing it out, by making it seem as if their loved ones haven’t passed when in fact they have.

Meredith: Well as you know, Sam invented this for me. When my grandmother died, I was desperate to retain at least something of her. At first, I was alarmed at finding email from her in my inbox, but now that I’ve gotten used to the idea, it’s helped me immensely. She was one of the most important people in my life. Strange as it sounds, I needed her to help me get over her loss. That’s what RePose allows me to do.

Etcetera. This goes on for a while. It never made the book, but that doesn’t mean writing it wasn’t useful. Notice that Sam doesn’t say a word. He’s the kind of guy who’d remain absolutely silent during a radio interview. This wasn’t something I realized until I actually tried it.

All of that said, a word of warning: be wary of knowing too much about your characters that can’t possibly go into the book. In your head, they may be fully fleshed out, wonderfully developed, quirky and interesting people, but unless they are that way on the page as well, it does you no good. So sometimes I won’t let myself do exercises like this one. I allow myself nothing that I can’t communicate to my reader. And that’s a useful exercise as well.

Book Description

May 7, 2013
When Sam Elling creates an algorithm to pair people with their soul mates online, he meets Meredith, his own perfect match. But when Meredith’s grandmother Livvie dies unexpectedly, Sam puts his algorithm to even better use: it compiles Livvie’s old emails and video chats to create a computer simulation so that Meredith can say goodbye. It’s not supernatural; it’s computer science, and Meredith loves it—too much to keep to herself.

Together, she and Sam open RePose to help others who have lost a loved one. Business takes off, but for every person who just wants to say goodbye, there’s someone else who can’t let go. This twenty-first-century love story asks what would happen if saying goodbye were just the beginning, and shows how love can take on a life of its own.

Review THE LOOK OF LOVE by BELLA ANDRE @bellaandre @HarlequinBooks @MiraEditors

Book Description

 June 13, 2011

With THE LOOK OF LOVE bestselling author Bella Andre introduces you to a fun and emotional contemporary romance series about the Sullivan family. Because when a Sullivan bad boy falls...he falls hard. And it's forever.

Chloe Peterson is having a bad night. A really bad night. The large bruise on her cheek can attest to that. And when her car skids off the side of a wet country road straight into a ditch, she’s convinced even the gorgeous guy who rescues her in the middle of the rain storm must be too good to be true. Or is he?

As a successful photographer who frequently travels around the world, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women, and whenever he’s home in San Francisco, one of his seven siblings is usually up for causing a little fun trouble. Chase thinks his life is great just as it is—until the night he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley. Not only has he never met anyone so lovely, both inside and out, but he quickly realizes she has much bigger problems than her damaged car. Soon, he is willing to move mountains to love—and protect—her, but will she let him?

Chloe vows never to make the mistake of trusting a man again. Only, with every loving look Chase gives her—and every sinfully sweet caress—as the attraction between them sparks and sizzles, she can’t help but wonder if she’s met the only exception. And although Chase didn’t realize his life was going to change forever in an instant, amazingly, he isn’t the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he’s gearing up for a different fight altogether…for Chloe’s heart.

(CAUTION: Explicit language, very steamy love scenes...and lots of emotion!)

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

From the instant I started this book, I was immediately captivated by the Sullivan family.  Each member, and there are lots, is given a bit of an introduction at the matriarch's birthday party.  This story centers around Chase Sullivan, a world-famous photographer and Chloe Peterson, on the run from an abusive ex-husband.  Chase comes upon Chloe after she has totaled her car and while Chase pulls her from the wreckage, the two have an instant connection. Chloe has something inside her that all the gorgeous models in the world don't have:  a beautiful inside.  While Chloe has sworn never to trust a man again, she finds herself melting to the good guy that Chase is.  Seriously, Chase is a really good guy, knowing that she has issues and letting her set the pace.  What a refreshing idea!

So as Chase gets to know Chloe and the details about her past are revealed, he becomes more intrigued with her.  Since the plot develops quickly - and for me believably - you can see that love at first sight does exist.  Chloe is just so darn likable and the fact that Chase is convenient, she still doesn't act like a gold digger.  This is what makes Andre one of my favorite guilty pleasures.  I have been a fan since she started with Ellora's Cave.  This new series reminded me a bit of Robyn Carr and her series, well, except with more heat.  I know I am glossing over the plot here but I don't want to give anything away.

So you know that sparks do fly when these two get together and that old adage "love conquers everything" is the theme here?  These two have such depth that is missing in a lot of romance these days.  The heat level is appropriate and completely makes sense.  One of my biggest issues with everyone jumping on the hot romance train these days is that there is just sex and no story.  This has everything perfectly packaged.  Just the right amount of each and perfectly balanced with the character development.  Yes, you do need to make believe that a guy with hot  supermodels thrown at him every day can fall for a girl like Chloe but that is what makes this whole thing the perfect romance for summer.

SNOWBOUND WITH THE SOLDIER ~ October 1, 2013

PLEASE WELCOME JENNIFER TO BOOKHOUNDS!

What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

That’s easy. Dr. Seuss. I’ve always had a fascination with his books. J Perhaps that’s where I got the desire to be a writer. Very possible.

What are you reading right now?

Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series. I just love that small town and the entertaining cast of characters. I will be so bummed when I get to the last book.

How does your garden grow?

Actually the flower garden is doing really well this year. It’s still early though. It isn’t usually lush and full of color until August. But I do love how the vibrant color of the zinnias, cosmos, and 4 o’clocks draw in the butterflies and hummingbirds. The honey bees I could do without, but they have an important job to do. ;-)

What is the last thing you Googled?

Secret rooms/passageways in New York City houses. It’s for an upcoming book, which I’m very excited about.

What makes you cringe?

Snakes. Ugh!!! I came face to face with one as a kid. I froze. It raised its head to strike…all I can say is thank goodness for a fast acting great-uncle. Still gives me the willies.

Giveaway Review THE KING'S DECEPTION by STEVE BERRY @BookTribBabe @RandomHouse

Book Description
Release date: June 11, 2013 | Series: Cotton Malone

Cotton Malone is back! Steve Berry’s new international adventure blends gripping contemporary political intrigue, Tudor treachery, and high-octane thrills into one riveting novel of suspense.

Cotton Malone and his fifteen-year-old son, Gary, are headed to Europe. As a favor to his former boss at the Justice Department, Malone agrees to escort a teenage fugitive back to England. But after he is greeted at gunpoint in London, both the fugitive and Gary disappear, and Malone learns that he’s stumbled into a high-stakes diplomatic showdown—an international incident fueled by geopolitical gamesmanship and shocking Tudor secrets.

At its heart is the Libyan terrorist convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103, who is set to be released by Scottish authorities for “humanitarian reasons.” An outraged American government objects, but nothing can persuade the British to intervene.

Except, perhaps, Operation King’s Deception.

Run by the CIA, the operation aims to solve a centuries-old mystery, one that could rock Great Britain to its royal foundations.

Blake Antrim, the CIA operative in charge of King’s Deception, is hunting for the spark that could rekindle a most dangerous fire, the one thing that every Irish national has sought for generations: a legal reason why the English must leave Northern Ireland. The answer is a long-buried secret that calls into question the legitimacy of the entire forty-five-year reign of Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch, who completed the conquest of Ireland and seized much of its land. But Antrim also has a more personal agenda, a twisted game of revenge in which Gary is a pawn. With assassins, traitors, spies, and dangerous disciples of a secret society closing in, Malone is caught in a lethal bind. To save Gary he must play one treacherous player against another—and only by uncovering the incredible truth can he hope to prevent the shattering consequences of the King’s Deception.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Cotton Malone's ex-wife has just made a devistating admission to their son about his biological father.  Gary, now a teen, has always thought that Cotton was his biological father and his world is thrown into a whirlwind.  Now retired and owning a bookstore in Denmark, he comes home to get Gary to take him back to Copenhagen with him and try to rebuild their relationship.  His old boss asks him for a favor, to bring back another youth, Ian,  to London, who has the UK version of the CIA in an uproar.  All because Ian happened to pickpocket the wrong man which put him in possession of a thumb drive with information that could bring down the crown.

In a story much like Dan Brown's books, this one is fast-paced built around an obscure historical footnote (bit of a spoiler - check out Bram Stoker's Famous Impostorsthat implies Queen Elizabeth I was actually a man since the real princess had died before coming to the throne.  Yeah, it really sounds far fetched but when Cotton is teamed up with an almost fired Inspector for the SOCA (British FBI) named Kathleen, things become really scary.  As Cotton and Gary befriend Ian, they step unawares into a thrilling plot to cover up the information they find.

This is one gripping book that had me up reading late into the night.  There is so much happening that I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but I just love books based on historical fiction that really could be true.  The boys in the story add quite a bit of human detail and gives an eye towards little insights that can sometimes be missed with just adults around.  I really enjoyed all of the characters as well as the plot.  Even the bad guys seemed pretty heroic and cast in shades of gray, while one of the good guys had equal shades of evil.   I have read other books in this series and most of these stand alone so you can easily jump in on any one of them.

Review WEATHER WITCH by SAHNNON DELANY @Shannon_Delany @StMartinsPress #WeatherWitch

Book Description

June 25, 2013

In a vastly different and darker Philadelphia of 1844, steam power has been repressed, war threatens from deep, dark waters, and one young lady of high social standing is expecting a surprise at her seventeenth birthday party–but certainly not the one she gets!

Jordan Astraea, who has lived out all of her life in Philadelphia’s most exclusive neighborhood, is preparing to celebrate her birthday with friends, family and all the extravagance they might muster. The young man who is most often her dashing companion, Rowen Burchette, has told her a surprise awaits her and her best friend, Catrina Hollindale, wouldn’t miss this night for all the world!

But storm clouds are gathering and threatening to do far more than dampen her party plans because someone in the Astraea household has committed the greatest of social sins by Harboring a Weather Witch.

MY THOUGHTS

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Jordan is almost seventeen and at her birthday, her biggest worry is how she will look at her party.  Her best friend, Catrina has been helping her prepare and as they gossip about the boys who will be there, Jordan only has eyes for her childhood sweetheart, Rowen.  Even though Rowen is a few steps under her social status, he would still make an acceptable marriage for her.  In this alternative world of Philadelphia, the only thing in life that matter is where you are on the social ladder.  The higher up the hill, the safer you are from the Merrow creatures in the  water that cause havoc and death to any unfortunate to come close.  This world is powered by witches who can harness the weather and energy around them.  To be a witch is to be of the lowest class.  So when the Council  shows up at Jordan's birthday party, they are certain to find a witch among the attendees.  When it turns out Jordan is the one they seek, her whole world falls apart.

Jordan is immediately carted off to Holgate, a place where people are pretty much tortured to transform them into witches that control the weather and conduct their magical power into electricity.  When she meets the Maker, Bran, she declares over and over that she is not a witch. Finding inner strength that she didn't know she had, she makes friends with her prisoner roommates while she waits for Rowen to save her.  As time goes on, she realizes that she is the only who can save her.  Bran has his own dark, secret past that I can wait to get more detail about his background.   The story switches back from these characters points of view and really adds to the story.

The story is full of intrigue, evil versus good, and the wonderful possibility of romance all built around magical elements with a bit of steampunk delicately woven in.  I finished this rather quickly and there was no way I could put it down until I was finished.  It left me breathless and wanting more.  I haven't read anything this compelling in a long time!  Now, the long wait for the next installment.  If you enjoy Cassandra Clare, Jana Oliver, JK Rowling, you are going to adore this new series.   Parents:  This is pretty safe for even the youngest of teens and I bet even mature middle grade students would enjoy it.

About the Author

(from Goodreads)

Shannon Delany's newest novel, WEATHER WITCH (St. Martin's Press) is already available for pre-order (which both stuns and delights Delany)!

Shannon Delany has written stories since she was a child. She began writing in earnest when her grandmother fell unexpectedly ill during a family vacation. In 2008 her greatly abbreviated version of 13 to Life (written in just five weeks) won the grand prize in the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world through Textnovel.com .

Shannon was thrilled when St. Martin’s Press offered her a contract for a series about her 13 to Life characters. She expanded on the cell phone novel version, adding the subplots and characters she didn’t have time to during the contest. As paranormal as werewolves seem, the grief Shannon used to build Jess’s character is something she personally experienced with the loss of her own mother. Focusing on Jess and Pietr’s story of loss, love and dramatic and dangerous changes, Shannon came to better grips with her own struggle. The resulting novel has earned her blurbs from authors she respects most.

The first novel in Shannon’s YA paranormal series, 13 to Life, debuted June 22, 2010, and was followed by Secrets and Shadows, Bargains and Betrayals, Destiny and Deception, and the Rivals and Retribution (August 2012).

Review A TRICK OF THE LIGHT by LOIS METZGER @HarperTeen @EpicReads

Book Description

June 18, 2013

Mike Welles had everything under control. But that was before. Now things are rough at home, and they’re getting confusing at school. He’s losing his sense of direction, and he feels like he’s a mess.

Then there’s a voice in his head. A friend, who’s trying to help him get control again. More than that—the voice can guide him to become faster and stronger than he was before, to rid his life of everything that’s holding him back. To figure out who he is again. If only Mike will listen.

Telling a story of a rarely recognized segment of eating disorder sufferers—young men—A Trick of the Light by Lois Metzger is a book for fans of the complex characters and emotional truths in Laurie Halse Anderson’s Wintergirls and Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why.

Lois Metzger was born in Queens and has always written for young adults. She is the author of three previous novels and two nonfiction books about the Holocaust, and she has edited five anthologies. MY THOUGHTS:

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Mike Welles is a responsible teen, he plays baseball, has good friends and makes decent grades.  Then, the unthinkable happens, his parents marriage starts falling apart and with it, his world.  One by one, he pushes his friends away and withdraws.  Mike starts stress eating and packs on a few pounds.  Amber, a girl he has known since kindergarten, reaches out to him, telling him slyly about how she handles her home issues by controlling what she can:  her appetite.  Through his eating, Mike learns to gain control over one part of his life, while the rest of it disintegrates.

As Mike finds himself loosing control over his home life, his disease takes over, speaking to him and dominating all of his thoughts. Even though he doesn't realize it, friends and teachers have contacted his parents about how much Mike has changed.  For all their faults, his parents really do care and when they see what is happening to him, they get him help.  The voice of his anorexia makes it so easy for Mike to disconnect and almost fold back into himself as he stops eating.  Sent to a hospital for eating disorders,  he finally quiets the voice in his head.

This book is amazingly heart-wrenching and told in such a quiet way, that you it makes you realize how insidiously an eating disorder can sneak up on some one.  I really liked Mike and he was very sympathetic in that you could see his world unravel and the unique voice he has since most books about eating disorders are written from a female protagonist's point of view.  I hadn't realize that so many males deal with this issue until I read the acknowledgements and did a bit of research to find that there are a lot of guys with this problem.  Parents:  This is an important read for everyone and yes, even though it is about a very sad topic, it contains a lot of important messages and should spark some wonderful discussions.
