My Thoughts
Loved it

Tessa has a serious case of Baby Lust so much so, that she is asking random, albeit handsome, strangers in bars about their DNA.  When said handsome stranger is falling in lust with her, she starts asking about his medical history, which of course, is a known lust-killer.  The handsome stranger turns out to be a chef with a PAST.  John Brown, aka Ian Browning, aka handsome stranger, applies for a job at the Casa Blanca resort where Tess is in charge of the gardens.  With the "help" of her friends and co-owners, Tess must face her PAST and in turn John must face his.

There is a serious chemistry between the two and as you get to know John/Ian, he begins to grow on you.  His sordid past is not that sordid and I developed a strong sympathy for him. I mean what isn't there to love about him.  He knows his way around a kitchen and loves kids.  I did wonder if he was just too perfect on the inside and was afraid that Tess would never know about it since he was forced to keep that a secret. But there is a twist in the plot and what seems impossible becomes just what Tessa wants but now for all the wrong reasons.  Vague?  I know -- go read the book.  Sigh.

The friendship between Tess and her girls is full of laughs.  You really want to meet these girls and hang out with them. There is also an undercurrent of tension there as well, since the four have combined to create a resort worthy of four star destination weddings.  Between that and the back story of John, the balance between light-hearted fun and serious consequences is well done.   I have read the whole series and each book does stand alone, but it is better to read them in order.  This is just a wonderful romance that will take you away.  If you enjoy Jill Shalvis or Robyn Carr.

MEET MARY BURTON...

Mary Burton enjoys the hunt.  This New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist, whose work has been compared to that of  Steig Larson*, Lisa Gardner**, and Lisa Jackson***, has been intrigued by investigative work and the people who do it since Virginia, her home state, was stung by a string of serial killings that spanned more than twenty years.  Not surprisingly, many of her suspense novels are fueled by the acts of multiple killers and the people who pursue them, as is NO ESCAPE, Mary's latest novel and the second in a trio of stories set in and around Austin.  There she calls upon the people and resources of the state's lead investigative team, the Texas Rangers.
NO ESCAPE's predecessor, THE SEVENTH VICTIM quickly became a USA Today bestseller.  It was praised by reviewers, including Publishers Weekly, which says it "delivers action-packed suspense" and calls it "compelling.”  Suspense Magazine hailed it as “an excellent thriller” and a “saga that readers will find unbelievably hard to put down.”
Mary's admiration for the work of law enforcement and the skills, insights and tools necessary to do it, is evident even in her earliest forays into suspense, such as In Dark Waters, in which a romance evolves when the Sheriff's office is called upon to solve a murder in rural Virginia. Future plots explored arson investigation, flaws within a witness protection program, and the reopening of a cold case.
Beginning with her novel I'm Watching You, Mary started connecting several cases and characters within the same department or agency. For I'm Watching You she invented a homicide unit for her hometown of Richmond, defined its strengths, weaknesses and resources, and kept those characters and elements in place through two additional stand-alone, but related, books, Dead Ringer and Dying Scream.
The three-book arc provided numerous creative options, especially as regards character development. This larger canvas allowed her to incorporate more of the forensic and procedural detail that fascinates her and her readers, and created new opportunities to explore dynamics unique to investigators working together over time.
Her other "connected" novels are Senseless, Merciless and Before She Dies, all set in Alexandria, and THE SEVENTH VICTIM, NO ESCAPE and YOU'RE NOT SAFE, which is being published in April 2014.
Mary's research has led her to interview a wide range of law enforcement personnel, to attend forensic seminars and to handle weaponry at the firing range.  She is a graduate of the Henrico County Citizens Police Academy and the Richmond FBI Citizen's Academy, and has attended Sisters in Crime's Forensic University program and the Writers Police Academy in Jamestown, North Carolina, where the focus was on undercover work, autopsies, and the theories behind why people kill.
Despite her emphasis on hard facts related to the crimes she writes about, Mary's approach to each new novel is psychological. She backs away from details, whether it's forensic research or a plot point she's already fixating upon. To begin her story she needs answers to three questions about her killers:  why do they kill, what demons drive them, and how do they choose their victims.  The answers are critical to her plot, she says, just as they are for detectives solving a murder.
A Richmond native whose family roots run as deep as the nation's, Mary has lived there for most of her life.  She graduated from Virginia's Hollins University and worked in marketing before deciding to write full time. Her first manuscript, a historical romance, was published in 2000.
Mary wrote several more romance novels and three novellas before embracing the dark world of suspense. She even managed to bring danger to her holiday novella, Christmas Past, which appears in the New York Times bestselling holiday anthology Silver Bells.
The author of twenty published novels and four novellas, Mary is a member of Thriller Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, for which she is president of the Central Virginia chapter. She travels frequently for signings, speaking engagements and other appearances.  She is a frequent speaker at conferences, book festivals, book stores and libraries regarding writing and genre fiction, and is frequently asked to present her "Unraveling Romantic Suspense" workshop or her day-long program "Writing Your Book...The First Step."
An avid baker and an accomplished cook, Mary's discovered that the creativity of the kitchen entwines with her professional routine in unanticipated ways.  It’s her ideal retreat when the writing hits a rough spot. Once there, she's working out dialogue, untangling plot lines and figuring out how to trap a killer before the oven has a chance to preheat.
When not committing murder, Mary pursues her Baking & Pastry Arts Certificate at the University of Richmond's Culinary Arts Program, and continues her involvement and appearances on behalf of Coordinators2inc, a lifetime adoption resource organization. She and her husband spend time alternately enjoying and lamenting their newly empty nest and spoiling their miniature dachshunds Buddy and Bella.
Mary is currently at work on her next novel, set in Nashville, and anticipating the November publication of her new Union Street Bakery novel, Sweet Expectations, written as Mary Ellen Taylor.

OMGOSH -- DACHSHUNDS....

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARY BURTON . . .

Mary, welcome!  Thank you for joining us.

You've created homicide departments for both the Richmond and Alexandria police departments for your books.  Why the switch to what seems to be a more formal "agency?"  Aren't the Texas Rangers more like the FBI?
The Texas Rangers are an elite group of men and women within the Texas Department of Public Safety and have a lot more resources than most local Police Departments.  I thought it would be interesting (for me and readers) to have more and quicker access to information and forensic data in the pursuit of this particular killer, especially considering the condensed time period in NO ESCAPE. I was also influenced by the reputation and history of the Rangers.  They’re the source of legends.  Often you hear the phrase ‘One Riot, One Ranger,’ associated with this elite group of lawmen.  Created in 1823, the Rangers have state wide authority, which also opened up some plot opportunities.

THE SEVENTH VICTIM was the first time you set a book in Austin, the headquarters of the Texas Rangers. Now you're taking us back there in NO ESCAPE.  What's happening now?
I'm betting you've already guessed there's trouble afoot.  It begins with an old case, when serial killer Harvey Lee Smith insists on telling his deathbed confession to THE SEVENTH VICTIM's forensic psychologist Jo Granger. She wants to find out what Harvey has yet to share--the whereabouts of victims whose families hope for closure.  She doesn't expect him to get inside her head.  And she doesn't expect to encounter ex-husband Brody Winchester, who earned his Texas Ranger star arresting Harvey. And nobody expects a new killer, one that's mirroring Harvey's terrifying M.O. of burying his victims alive.

Harvey manages to "get inside" Jo's head by turning the conversation to her, asking her questions and telling her to "look inside herself." What makes her susceptible to his probing?
She’s grown up with questions about her family.  Her parents told her one story all her life and, for reasons she’s never been able to explain, that story just never rang true.  Harvey seems to understand that she has questions about her childhood.

Brody Winchester and Jo are suddenly thrust together because of Harvey.  It's the first time they've seen each other since they divorced fourteen years ago, after a brief, painful marriage. They have a lot of baggage.  What made you think they could ever get over their past?
They were young when they were first married and both have grown up over the last fourteen years. I had confidence that they’d realize it was okay to forgive each other for mistakes that they both regret.

Brody takes a lot of heat for his past behavior. How difficult was it to make him a character readers can root for?
How many of us have made mistakes in our youth?  Brody is no different.  However, he owns up to his mistakes and he wants to make amends.  I thought he deserved a second chance and that readers would come to agree with me.

So many characters in the book are keeping secrets.  Harvey, the copy-cat killer, and Jo's mother keep people in the dark.  What are Jo's secrets?  Brody's?
Brody’s secret is that he never believed he was good enough for Jo.  That belief plagued him greatly when he was younger and may have contributed to some of his bad decisions.  Now that he’s older, confident, and a success in his own right, he can be the man Jo deserves.  And Jo, well, I don’t see her as having secrets.  She’s the one honest person in the book.  She’s always suspected her mother held secrets and she decided early in her life to be upfront and honest.

Suspense novels and romantic suspense are consistently popular with readers.  Why is that?
In my mind romance and suspense are the prefect blend of genres.  You’ve got the sizzle of romance and the smoke of the mystery.  One offers the reader hope at the end and the other offers justice.  And what I really love about the blend is that each creates such delightful conflict for the other.

What makes you return to the suspense genre again and again?
I love it.  There are so many angles that I can use to approach romantic suspense that when I’m writing one I just never get tired of it.

What's next?
I'm calling upon the Texas Rangers again for YOU'RE NOT SAFE, which will be published in April.  This time it's Ranger Tec Bragg and vineyard owner Greer Templeton.  Though favorite characters will return to the story, this is the first time readers will meet Tec and Greer.  And, as do NO ESCAPE and THE SEVENTH VICTIM, it takes place around Austin, this time on a vineyard in the Hill Country.

Where can readers find out more about your books and work-in- progress?
I post updates and photos and check in often on Facebook, so there's lots of info there.  And my site is always open at www.maryburton.com.  Now, as my calendar is shaping up for 2014, I also expect to have lots of opportunities to visit with readers and other writers in person.  Events are listed on my site at http://www.maryburton.com/events/.
Thanks for having me!

Review Doomed (Damned #2) by Chuck Palahniuk @DoubdayPub @chuckpalahniuk

Book Description

 October 8, 2013

Madison Spencer, the liveliest and snarkiest dead girl in the universe, continues the afterlife adventure begun in Chuck Palahniuk’s bestsellerDamned. Just as that novel brought us a brilliant Hell that only he could imagine, Doomed is a dark and twisted apocalyptic vision from this provocative storyteller.

The bestselling Damned chronicled Madison’s journey across the unspeakable (and really gross) landscape of the afterlife to confront the Devil himself. But her story isn’t over yet. In a series of electronic dispatches from the Great Beyond, Doomed describes the ultimate showdown between Good and Evil.
After a Halloween ritual gone awry, Madison finds herself trapped in Purgatory—or, as mortals like you and I know it, Earth. She can see and hear every detail of the world she left behind, yet she’s invisible to everyone who’s still alive. Not only do people look right through her, they walk right through her as well. The upside is that, no longer subject to physical limitations, she can pass through doors and walls. Her first stop is her parents’ luxurious apartment, where she encounters the ghost of her long-deceased grandmother. For Madison, the encounter triggers memories of the awful summer she spent upstate with Nana Minnie and her grandfather, Papadaddy. As she revisits the painful truth of what transpired over those months (including a disturbing and finally fatal meeting in a rest stop’s fetid men’s room, in which . . . well, never mind), her saga of eternal damnation takes on a new and sinister meaning. Satan has had Madison in his sights from the very beginning: through her and her narcissistic celebrity parents, he plans to engineer an era of eternal damnation. For everyone.
Once again, our unconventional but plucky heroine must face her fears and gather her wits for the battle of a lifetime. Dante Alighieri, watch your back; Chuck Palahniuk is gaining on you.

About the Author
CHUCK PALAHNIUK's twelve bestselling novels—Damned, Tell-All, Pygmy, Snuff, Rant, Haunted, Diary, Lullaby, Choke, Invisible Monsters, Survivor, and Fight Club—have sold more than five million copies in the United States. He is also the author of Fugitives and Refugees, published as part of the Crown Journey Series, and the nonfiction collection Stranger Than Fiction. He lives in the Pacific Northwest.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Madison is back and is now guiding you with after-life etiquette though her blog postings on how to get into heaven. Except what she is telling you will actually bring you to a hotter afterlife.  Through her brief stint in the telemarketing department of hell, she is posed to take over in a coup attempt that Satan would admire if he were not the victim.  Realizing that being damned only takes a few steps, she reconnects with her parents and gives them the "secret" to the afterlife in hopes that the family can reunite.  Except, she doesn't count on her parents' evangelistic take on her rules for salvation and in the process sends more people to hell than you can possibly imagine.

This second installment of the Damned trilogy continues Madison snarky take on life and the afterlife.  At the core of her issues is that fact that no matter how bright and intelligent she is, she is still a twelve year old girl who only wants the love of her mommy and daddy.  All this mixed with social commentary on global domination by conglomerates and you have a weird morality tale.  I though Madison regressed a bit in this one and didn't see much of her strength like in Damned. I did learn a lot about her life on earth, some of which will make you wonder just exactly how she ended up in hell.

Review CHASER by John W. Pilley @HMHCo

Book Description

 October 29, 2013

The amazing story of a very smart Border collie who is redefining animal intelligence.

Chaser has a way with words. She knows over a thousand of them—more than any other animal of any species except humans. In addition to common nouns like house, ball, and tree, she has memorized the names of more than one thousand toys and can retrieve any of them on command. Based on that learning, she and her owner and trainer, retired psychologist John Pilley, have moved on to further impressive feats, demonstrating her ability to understand sentences with multiple elements of grammar and to learn new behaviors by imitation.

John’s ingenuity and tenacity as a researcher are as impressive as Chaser’s accomplishments. His groundbreaking approach has opened the door to a new understanding of animal intelligence, one that requires us to reconsider what actually goes on in a dog’s mind. Chaser’s achievements reveal her use of deductive reasoning and complex problem-solving skills to address novel challenges.

Yet astonishingly, Chaser isn’t unique. John’s training methods can be adopted by any dog lover. Through the poignant story of how he trained Chaser, raised her as a member of the Pilley family, and proved her abilities to the scientific community, he reveals the positive impact of incorporating learning into play and more effectively channeling a dog’s natural drives.

John’s work with Chaser offers a fresh perspective on what’s possible in the relationship between a dog and a human. His story points us toward a new way of relating to our canine companions that takes into account our evolving understanding of the way animals and humans learn.

About the Author

JOHN W. PILLEY is an emeritus professor of psychology at Wofford College. He has been working with Chaser since 2004 and has published the findings from their work in the journal Behavioural Processes.

Hilary Hinzmann is a freelance editor and writer based in New York City.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Bottom Line:  Dogs are much smarter than they are given credit.  John Pilley explains exactly how quickly they learn and given the chance can communicate with us.  Pilley explains how he used his dogs as research subjects in his lab in his job as a psychology professor.   His students observed them and dissected their abilities.  After his last dog dies, his wife insists he is getting a new puppy for Christmas and they both agree that a local breeder of Border Collies is their best choice.  With infinite patience and his training as a scientist, he teaches his new pup to relate objects to words.

Border Collies are working dogs and love routines, without structure in their lives, they can be almost destructive.  Their natural curiosity and ability to be trained is both a gift and a curse.  I had an Australian Shepherd with a similar personality and if we didn't do our routine each day, he was a very unhappy dog.  I had taught my dog probably 100 words and he could easily follow commands to retrieve certain objects.  I never imagined that a dog could place names to over a thousand objects.

There is a science background to this book, so as well as being a memoir, it also has some wonderful information based on fact to go along with it.  Chaser was featured on a NOVA program about her unique abilities.  This is one fascinating look at how you can train a dog to learn more than you thought possible with a little extra time and energy.  Dog and memoir fans are going to adore this story.

$25 Giveaway Review A BARGAINED FOR BRIDE by MARCIA LYNN McCLURE @toobusyreading

a bargainedA Bargained-For Bride by Marcia Lynn McClure (Novella)

Excerpt

“You’re the sweetest girl in Mourning Dove Creek, you know?” Jack mumbled as he paused in kissing Jilly a moment.

Jilly smiled. “And you’re the handsomest man in Mourning Dove Creek, you know,” she flirted in return.

Jack smiled. “I do know,” he said.

Jilly giggled. Jack Taylor was so predictable—and a little conceited. He really did think he was the handsomest man in Mourning Dove—and he was, for the most part.

Secretly, however, if Jilly ever allowed herself to be completely honest about it (which she tried to avoid), there was one other man in Mourning Dove who always crossed her mind when the subject of the handsomest man in town arose. Yet there was no lingering on thinking of that man—no sirree! Not for a moment! Not for any reason—ever. And so Jilly just kept telling Jack that he was the handsomest man in Mourning Dove Creek. Besides, it was almost true—being that the other man lived outside of town and not right in town the way Jack did

My Thoughts
Loved it

Jilly, raised by her grandparents after being orphaned, is used to their old fashioned ways and thinks she is in love with Jack, since sparks fly when they kiss, but something just doesn't ring true with him. Boone, also orphaned, meets Jilly when he is twelve and she is just eight, she also gifts him with something precious to her at Christmas that Boone never forgets.  So when Boone asks for her hand in marriage, her grandfather says yes, and Jilly is not sure what to expect since he never really paid her any attention.  This being the west, Boone is accustom to taking charge and going after what he wants.  I can't tell you the whole circumstance between this somewhat arranged marriage since it might ruin it for it.

In true McClure fashion, the kiss at the wedding makes Jilly's toes curl and she realizes exactly what a kiss can do to a girl.  That and the fact that she has always had a crush on Boone.  Once they are married, Boone sets her up in a separate bedroom, Jilly becomes a bit confused but accepts it and thinks since they haven't really known each other long, it will help them connect.  And then, Boone leaves and Jilly worries about his safety.  This historical western is just very romantic and this is what this author does best.  I love the dialogue and the tension between the characters. Another wonderfully clean romance from McClure that will let you escape for a few hours.

About Kristen:

Kristen shares a birthday with Steven Tyler and Diana Ross.  She spends each day striving to be half as fabulous as they are.  She’s worn many hats, none as flattering as her cowboy hat: banker, retail manager, fledgling web designer, world’s worst cocktail waitress, panty slinger, now makeup artist and author.  She loves sunshine, live music, the middle of nowhere, and finding new things to put in her house.  Because The Night is the first book from The Night Songs Collection
Kristen is represented by Pam van Hylckama Vlieg of Foreword Literary.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Callie is 18 and and seems to have an addiction to vampires and/or sex with vampires (bloodlust as it is known in Las Vegas).  Her main obsession is Tristan, her schoolmate, the guitar player for the vampire/metal band Immortal Dilemma.  She is the good girl who wants to fix the bad boy.  Yes, you know where this is going and it is a wonderful experience.  Never really recovered from her high school crush, she watches Tristan spiral into addiction as only a rock god can.  Of course, she tries to save him from the world that is crashing down upon him.

I thought the characters were really well drawn and realistic, well, as real as a vampire can get.  It reminded me a bit of Anne Rice and Lestat.  It just makes so much sense that a vampire should be in a band since the hours are right.  There is also a nice little triangle involved and with Callie only being 18, she makes every mistake that a girl that age could possibly make, but unlike most girls that age in books, she grows and matures.  This is one spicy romance that you can easily read in one sitting.

Giveaway & Excerpt DEAD MAN'S TIME by PETER JAMES @peterjamesuk @MinotaurBooks

Book Description

 October 15, 2013

In Dead Man's Time, the latest from international bestselling author Peter James, Roy Grace finds himself up against that most dangerous of all adversaries—a man with fury in his heart who has nothing to lose.

New York, 1922. Five-year-old Gavin Daly and his seven-year-old sister, Aileen, are boarding the SS Mauretania to Dublin—and safety. Their mother has been shot and their Irish mobster father abducted. Suddenly, a messenger hands Gavin a piece of paper on which are written four names and eleven numbers, a cryptic message that will haunt him all his life, and his father's pocket watch. As the ship sails, Gavin watches Manhattan fade into the dusk and makes a promise, that one day he will return and find his father.

Brighton, 2012. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace investigates a savage burglary in Brighton, in which an old lady is murdered and £10m of antiques have been taken, including a rare vintage watch. To Grace’s surprise, the antiques are unimportant to her family—it is the watch they want back. As his investigation probes deeper, he realizes he has kicked over a hornets nest of new and ancient hatreds. At its heart is one man, Gavin Daly, the dead woman’s ninety-five-year-old brother. He has a score to settle and a promise to keep—both of which lead to a murderous trail linking the antiques world of Brighton, the crime fraternity of Spain’s Marbella, and New York.

Roy Grace, in a race against the clock to stop another killing, has met his most dangerous adversary yet.

Brooklyn, February 1922
The boy’s father kissed him goodnight for the last time – although
neither of them knew that.
The boy never went to sleep until he had had that kiss. Every
night, late, long after he had gone to bed, he would lie waiting
in the darkness, until he heard the door of his room open, and
saw the light flood in from the landing. Then the shadowy figure
and the sound of his father’s heavy footsteps across the bare boards.
‘Hey, little guy, you still awake?’ he would say in his low, booming
voice.
‘Yep, big guy, I am! Can I see your watch?’
His father would take out the watch from his pocket, and hold
it up by the chain. It was shiny, with a big, round face, and there
was a winder on the top with a hoop the chain was attached to. In
the top half of the face was a section that showed the phases of the
moon. The sky behind the moon was dark blue and the stars were
gold. Sometimes the moon was barely visible, just peeping
Other times it was whole, an ochre disc.
Every night the boy would ask his father to tell him a story
about the Man in the Moon. His father always did. Then he would
tousle his hair, kiss him on the forehead and ask, ‘You said your
prayers?’
The boy would nod.
‘You go to sleep now.’
Then his father would clump back out of the room and close
the door.
That’s how it was the very last time.
