Giveaway - Guest Post TRAVELING LIGHT by ANDREA THALASINOS @torforgeauthors

Book Description

July 16, 2013

Paula Makaikis is ashamed of her marriage. Driven out of their bedroom by Roger’s compulsive hoarding, she has spent the past ten years sleeping downstairs on her husband’s ratty couch. Distant and uninspired, Paula is more concerned with the robins landing on her office window ledge than her hard-earned position at the university.

Until a phone call changes everything.

A homeless Greek man is dying in a Queens hospital and Paula is asked to come translate. The old man tells her of his beloved dog, Fotis, who bit a police officer when they were separated. Paula has never considered adopting a dog, but she promises the man that she will rescue Fotis and find him a good home. But when Fotis enters her life she finds a companion she can’t live without. Suddenly Paula has a dog, a brand-new Ford Escape, an eight-week leave of absence, and a plan.

So Fotis and Paula begin the longest drive of their lives. In northern Minnesota, something compels her to answer a help-wanted ad for a wildlife rehabilitation center. Soon Paula is holding an eagle in her hands, and the experience leaves her changed forever.

An inspiring story about fate, family, and healing, this novel explores what is possible when we cut the ties that hold us down and the heart is free to soar.

Traveling Light by Andrea Thalasinos is an inspiring story about fate, family, and healing.

PLEASE WELCOME ANDREA TO BOOKHOUNDS

Almost six years ago one of my precious sled dogs, Leda was diagnosed with lymphoma and died shortly thereafter. She’d been only 11 ½ years old. I was used to huskies living to more than 15 and had assumed that for Leda and me, the best was yet to come.

Leda had been one of my younger dogs, her son Panda the youngest.  I’d taken it for granted that once my two ailing 15 + year old had dogs passed on, Panda and Leda would “cash in” to be spoiled rotten after we were down to a two-dog household.  I’d put off many things in lieu of caring for the older dogs, but for my lovely Leda this time would never come. Within three months, I’d lost the older two females (which was expected), but then out of nowhere Leda became gravely ill and was gone within a month.  Her death broke my heart and left me with the bitter sting of false promises. It was a harsh lesson—one I keep in my arsenal of reminders:  to live in the moment, put nothing off.

Leda’s early death had also left Panda a lone dog in a once multi-dog household.  He and I would look at each other, our expressions mirroring the silence, stillness and harshness of no second chances.

Then about eighteen months later on Valentine’s Day a rescue friend of mine phoned, looking to place a husky from Washington State.  I was ambivalent about getting another dog.  I didn’t think I had room in my heart.  “There’s nothing bad in this one,” my friend and the legendary, Lois Leonard encouraged. On Lois’ word, I adopted Luna.  The dog was just as much a stranger to us as we were to her.  To be truthful, I almost resented her for not being Leda.  The first few months were awkward since Panda and I had been bonded since his birth in my home.  I was the first thing he’d touched outside of his mother’s body, plus he’d run with my dog team from the time he was six months old.

A few months later as Panda and I were cuddling, Luna stepped up.  She nudged my arm, wanting in on the cuddle as if to ask, “I know you don’t love me like him, but could you?”  I will never forget that moment.  Her request broke open my heart; I loved Luna as my own.

It took losing my sweet Leda to teach me that sometimes tomorrow never comes.  Love well the people and animals in your life.

Giveaway - Spotlight THE AGE OF ICE by J.M. SIDOROVA @ScribnerBooks

Book Description

July 23, 2013

The Empress Anna Ioannovna has issued her latest eccentric order: construct a palace out of ice blocks. Inside its walls her slaves build a wedding chamber, a canopy bed on a dais, heavy drapes cascading to the floor—all made of ice. Sealed inside are a disgraced nobleman and a deformed female jester. On the empress’s command—for her entertainment—these two are to be married, the relationship consummated inside this frozen prison. In the morning, guards enter to find them half-dead. Nine months later, two boys are born.

Surrounded by servants and animals, Prince Alexander Velitzyn and his twin brother, Andrei, have an idyllic childhood on the family’s large country estate. But as they approach manhood, stark differences coalesce. Andrei is daring and ambitious; Alexander is tentative and adrift. One frigid winter night on the road between St. Petersburg and Moscow, as he flees his army post, Alexander comes to a horrifying revelation: his body is immune to cold.

J. M. Sidorova’s boldly original and genrebending novel takes readers from the grisly fields of the Napoleonic Wars to the blazing heat of Afghanistan, from the outer reaches of Siberia to the cacophonous streets of nineteenth-century Paris. The adventures of its protagonist, Prince Alexander Velitzyn—on a lifelong quest for the truth behind his strange physiology—will span three continents and two centuries and bring him into contact with an incredible range of real historical figures, from Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, to the licentious Russian empress Elizaveta and Arctic explorer Joseph Billings.

The Age of Ice is one of the most enchanting and inventive debut novels of the year.

About the Author

She attended Moscow State University and the graduate school of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Review WHAT YOU WANT IS IN THE LIMO by MICHAEL WALKER @SPIEGELandGRAU @laurelcanyon2 #MusicMonday

Book Description

July 23, 2013

An epic joyride through three history-making tours in 1973 that defined rock and roll superstardom—the money, the access, the excess—forevermore.

The Who’s Quadrophenia. Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy. Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies. These three unprecedented tours—and the albums that inspired them—were the most ambitious of these artists’ careers, and they forever changed the landscape of rock and roll: the economics, the privileges, and the very essence of the concert experience. On these juggernauts, rock gods—and their entourages—were born, along with unimaginable overindulgence and the legendary flameouts. Tour buses were traded for private jets, arenas replaced theaters, and performances transmogrified into over-the-top, operatic spectacles. As the sixties ended and the seventies began, an altogether more cynical era took hold: peace, love, and understanding gave way to sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

But the decade didn’t become the seventies, acclaimed journalist Michael Walker writes, until 1973, a historic and mind-bogglingly prolific year for rock and roll that saw the release of countless classic albums, from The Dark Side of the Moon to Goat’s Head Soup; Goodbye Yellow Brick Road; Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.; and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. Aerosmith, Queen, and Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut albums. The Roxy and CBGB opened their doors. Every major act of the era—from Fleetwood Mac to Black Sabbath—was on the road that summer, but of them all, Walker writes, it was The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper who emerged as the game changers.

Walker revisits each of these three tours in memorable, all-access detail: he goes backstage, onto the jets, and into the limos, where every conceivable wish could be granted. He wedges himself into the sweaty throng of teenage fans (Walker himself was one of them) who suddenly were an economic force to be reckoned with, and he vividly describes how a decade’s worth of decadence was squeezed into twelve heart-pounding, backbreaking, and rule-defying months that redefined, for our modern times, the business of superstardom.

About the Author
Michael Walker is the author of the national bestseller Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll’s Legendary Neighborhood. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone, among other publications. He lives in Los Angeles.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

The story covers three major musical groups during their epic tours during 1973.  This was the year that changed how bands toured, fans perceived them and the money they made.  The Who, elder statesmen, have just released Quadrophenia and plan to put this album on display like they did with Tommy. Led Zeppelin, craves the critical attention that The Who attains and is touring around the United States in their first major press.  Alice Cooper champions a true stage presentation of their music with Billion Dollar Babies. Each band has something different to offer the audience but underneath it all, they just want attention.  This is the start of rock stardom with all of the excess and lays the foundation for any musical wannabe to attain.

I found this book truly fascinating even though it presents a history of each act and contains a lot of facts about the background of each.  There is a lot of analysis. interviews with the people who supported each act and goes into the business behind a major band during this time period.  Yes, the drugs and groupies are all mentioned and a lot of the stories I had heard in passing are all present.  Led Zeppelin's groupies, Keith Moon's drugs and Alice Cooper's alcohol are given fair play.  I have met several people mentioned as supporting characters and found that reading their history put a whole new spin on it for me.

Once upon a time a girl traveled so far from home that she found herself in another world where heroes, elves, vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, fae, berserkers, and psychics became her friends and family. As an accidental pilgrim, a stranger in a "strangish: land, she learned that there's a place where adventure intersects fairytales and that true love can find you in the strangest places, when you're least expecting it, even when you're far, far from home.

    Includes:

    1. My Familiar Stranger: Romancing the Vampire Hunters (Nominated for Best Paranormal Romance of 2012 by Reviewers Choice Awards. Nominated for Best PNR and Best Fantasy Romance by Readers Choice Awards.)

DESCRIPTION. Minutes ahead of inevitable assassination, Elora Laiken is forcibly transported to an alternate dimension similar, but not identical, to her own. She is stranded. Alone. Far from home. An alien amid the modern day knights of a secret society of vampire hunters and paranormal investigators.

Of course a girl could suffer worse problems than having gorgeous suitors. Perhaps more importantly, in the midst of an epidemic of vampire related abductions, can she stay alive long enough to choose between an honor debt, true love, or the breathlessness of single-minded passion?

    2. The Witch's Dream: A Love Letter to Paranormal Romance

DESCRIPTION: Quintessential Black Swan knight, Engel Storm, was left behind when Elora Laiken chose his best friend. Now his heart is bruised and battered and he’s had it with love. But a transplanted witch who happens to be the world’s best tracker plans to do everything in her considerable power to change his mind.

The Witch’s Dream begins with B Team on temporary assignment to Black Swan headquarters in Edinburgh where they are supposed to fill in for stretched-thin resources and assist with a werewolf issue. They’ve been given permission to stop on the way to celebrate a special handfasting in an Irish castle.

When they reach Edinburgh, the afterglow of an elftale wedding quickly becomes all business. A missing person report turns into a demon abduction. A simple werewolf sanction becomes a diplomatic issue requiring the one thing Elora is no longer willing to give - finesse.

    3. A Summoner's Tale: The Vampire's Confessor

DESCRIPTION: A secret society, a witch, a psychic, vampires, modern day knights, heroes, elves, fae, assassins from another dimension, and fairytales come together where emotions intersect. Two souls, joined by a mystical bond, separated by distance, struggle through pain and darkness simultaneously. Each alone must traverse an ultimate confrontation with character and the will to survive. Ex-vampire, Istvan Baka, and his first victim prove that true love can wait patiently through lifetimes for a second chance. Even in the strangest places. Even when you're least expecting it. Even when you're far, far from home.

    The Black Swan Abbreviated Playlist
    Victoria Danann's Music Inspiration

The original release of My Familiar Stranger had song lyrics at the beginning of every chapter. They were removed for legal reasons, but the sentiment behind the songs still permeates each page.
If you've run across my bio, you know I'm also a musician. Because I can so easily get drawn into music and be distracted with such things as breaking down its parts or thinking how I would have done the arrangement differently, I don't listen while writing. Ever. But, that doesn't mean that music doesn't serve my writing as both inspiration and influence. Or that I don't hear it in my head when writing.
The songs I'm listing in this post are songs that are either mentioned in the books or inspired parts of the books.

Black Swan 1, My Familiar Stranger

    1. "At Last"

    MY FAMILIAR STRANGER VIDEO: http://youtu.be/KLRFw_6gP5Q
    :

My good friend Alicia (Lovely) Brass, one of the lead singers with The Next Level Band, sings the soundtrack for the video. I think of this as Ram's perspective in song. He didn't know how long he'd been wishing for his mate until she showed up holding his best friend's hand.

    2. "Love Bites" - Def Leppard. http://youtu.be/C7gMtWTMNt8

This song is mentioned in the book. It's a joke between Elora Laiken and Istvan Baka, but it's also darkly serious. I really think of this as Baka's song. I'm including the lyrics because I was hearing this song in my head over and over when I wrote the following scene. The pull that he feels toward Elora is desperate. He isn't just looking for a good time. He has to be close to her.

"If you bite me, I will stake you." - Elora
"If I bite you, I will stake myself." - Baka

    3. "Victim of Love" - The Eagles

What kind of love have you got?
You should be home but you’re not.
A room full of noise and dangerous boys
still makes you thirsty and hot.

I was hearing this song when I was writing the scenes in Notte Fuoco. Elora was in mid-dilemma. Three dangerous boys believed they were in love with her and any one of them would make any woman thirsty and hot.

    4. "Face in the Mirror" - Thunderstone

There’s a face in the mirror, the eyes of a stranger.
You can burn yourself if you fly too close to the sun that shines so bright.
You can turn away or decide to stay where the darkness takes over the light.
We are weakened by the virus and there’s nothing we can feel.
If this will be our last song, I welcome you to the real.
So this is the way we live. These are the hands that give.
There’s a face in the mirror and mirror never lies.

These lyrics went with the chapter when Ram woke up in the same hospital room as Elora to find that she had been infected by the vampire virus.

    5. "Broken Wings" - Mr Mister http://youtu.be/Ejz9UVXhlwk

    :

    Baby,
    it’s all I know,
that you’re half of the flesh
    and blood makes me whole.

These lyrics went at the beginning of Chapter 21, when Ram had retreated to his boyhood sanctuary in the New Forest preserve in northern Ireland, thinking he had lost his mate forever, to his closest friend.

Black Swan 2, The Witch's Dream

There are three songs that figured prominently into the writing of this book which drew heavily on an eighties theme.

    1. "Holding Out For A Hero" - Bonnie Tyler http://youtu.be/dLNCX84-kfA

    2. "Never Gonna Give You Up" Two versions: Original - Rick Astley. Acoustic by Derik Nelson for The Witch's Dream.

    THE WITCH'S DREAM VIDEO: http://youtu.be/BGKm-A1JqbI

Of course, as you all know, there is one song that figures prominently into the storyline. I would have loved to include most of the lyrics in Kay's and Katrina's wedding ceremony, but reaching three composers and trying to negotiate separate deals turned into a bigger "deal" than I could have imagined. Nonetheless, I referenced the song and hoped that people who weren't familiar would look it up. It is, without a doubt, THE quintessential disco song of the era. It also has the most romantic lyrics of all time.
My promise to deliver Ram's acoustic version in the video has brought lots of readers to hear Derik Nelson's arrangement which, as Ram would say, is bloomin' perfection.

Victoria'a FAVORITE fan comment ever! Grabbed as a Goodreads quote... "I've been Rick Rolled by my book!" What? You don't know what it means to be Rick Rolled? Watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H52TTCoS7To

    3. "Devil Inside" - INXS http://youtu.be/jPDh0F67YsA

Because Deliverance's demon is tongue-in-cheek. In Moonlight, he actually programs this song as a ring tone into Litha's phone without her permission.

    Black Swan 3, A Summoner's Tale

    1. "Still of the Night" - David Coverdale/ White Snake http://youtu.be/iXTRRFM_TuA

This is the song that provides the music for the book video. It is, in my opinion, THE great Classic Rock masterpiece of the era. It dovetailed into what I was writing about so beautifully that it almost seemed like the song and the book were conceived as a pair. I looked up the song because the phrase that I kept hearing in my head over and over again, when Elora and Baka were simultaneously alone and in agony, was "Still of the Night".
My band has covered everything from Led Zeppelin to Styx, note for note, but even we won't attempt this music.

    2. "Mairsy Doats" - The Pied Pipers http://youtu.be/EU2CKQQr90E

Mentioned near the end of the book, when Baka inadvertently leads the rescue team to his location by singing this song loudly. It's a nonsense song from 1944, but, at six-hundred-years-old, that would practically make it a current hit to him. I include this for the 99% of readers who may never have even heard of this song.

    Black Swan 4, Moonlight

    1. "Lil' Red Riding Hood" - Sam the Sham, and the Pharoahs http://youtu.be/_FA85RO89HA

    :

Obviously, this is Grey's song. The fact that he's a fool for Luna doesn't make him any less dangerous. In fact, being cast into the uncertainty of love be conquered probably makes him more predatory. If you are a reader who gets caught up in a story, you probably don't think about the fairytale parallels being subtly woven into the story, but it is there nonetheless.

Giveaway Review DEATH RIDES AGAIN by JANICE HAMRICK @JaniceHamrick @MinotaurBooks

    Book Description

June 18, 2013 Jocelyn Shore Mysteries (Book 3)

Texas high school teacher Jocelyn Shore had been looking forward to spending Thanksgiving at her Uncle Kel’s ranch, but her visit takes an unexpected turn when she discovers Uncle Kel threatening his son-in-law Eddy with a shotgun. It seems that Kel, who is hosting the whole Shore clan, is none too happy about how Eddy has been treating his daughter Ruby June, and tensions are about to boil over.

Thanks to Jocelyn’s quick thinking, Eddy makes it out alive, and it looks like Ruby June is going to toss him out for good. Yet no one knows for sure because that is the last anyone saw of Ruby June. The family pins the disappearance on Eddy and files a missing-persons report. Still, it isn’t until Jocelyn and her sometime-boyfriend, Austin homicide detective Colin Gallagher, find Eddy’s body at the bottom of a caliche pit that the police really take notice. Unfortunately, all eyes---including Colin’s---are on Jocelyn’s family as the most likely suspects. While Colin assists the local police, Jocelyn and her cousin Kyla decide to investigate on their own. Their hunt turns up a shady ranch manager, a mysterious racehorse owner, and an overly persistent goat, but no sign of Ruby June . . . or a killer who is poised to strike again.

With a family reunion that is getting smaller by the minute and more romance and humor than can be fenced in on any ranch, Janice Hamrick’s Death Rides Again is another outstanding addition to her award-winning mystery series.

    MY THOUGHTS
    ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Jocelyn is still teaching high school in Austin, on the fence about the hunky detective, Colin,  she recently met and long distance dating, Alan, who now lives in Dallas full time.  Thanksgiving  at Uncle Kel's ranch is a family reunion that comes with a lot of baggage.   The biggest of course is her two boyfriends that Kyla invites without Jocelyn's knowledge. Her cousin, Ruby June, is found to have been abused by her husband, Eddy,  who turns up dead and Ruby has now disappeared.  Jocelyn witnesses Eddy meeting with someone who might be his murderer.  As Jocelyn's jumps to more than conclusions in this latest installment, you wonder if she will make it out alive.

Told with a lot of humor, a touch of romance, Hamrick brings life to  this Texan mystery.  All of the characters are memorable and you will be wondering who Jocelyn picks as her one boyfriend.  Parts of Jocelyn's escapes remind me of an I Love Lucy episode and had me really laughing out loud.  There is just enough tension and suspense that will make you want to finish in one night.  I always have a great time reading Hamrick's stories and just wish that these were released more than once a year.

Meet Me at the Cupcake Café by Jenny Colgan
    July 2013

Baking is in Issy Randall’s blood. Growing up above her grandfather’s bakery taught Issy that a delicious pastry could make any day better. So when she’s laid off from her desk job—by the man she thought was her boyfriend, no less—Issy knows now is the time to start her own little café.

Armed with her grandfather’s tried and true recipes, as well as her own new dishes, Issy’s new dream job should be a piece-of-cake, right? But managing a café, delivering products on time and trying to have a new love life aren’t exactly going as Issy planned. And when her ex comes back into the picture, perhaps with his own motives, Issy’s search for the perfect pastry and a groundbreaking idea to save her café are much more than she bargained for…

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jenny Colgan was a fussy eater as a child and didn’t even begin to learn to cook until she was 21, when her then boyfriend tried to teach her a few basics purely out of exasperation. While she is now able to make a variety of good, wholesome food for her family, she still can’t make scones. A former columnist for The Guardian, Jenny contributes regularly to national BBC radio and is the bestselling author of more than eleven novels, including The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris (coming out in the US in early 2014). She is married with three children and lives in London and France. For more information, please visit http://www.jennycolgan.com/ and follow her on Twitter, @JennyColgan.

WoW: Rude Bitches Make Me Tired by Celia Rivenbark @StMartinsPress @celiarivenbark

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at  Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

    This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

    Book Description

    October 22, 2013

The funniest, New York Times bestselling southern humorist delivers a book of etiquette for the modern age.

Celia Rivenbark's seventh book, Rude Bitches Make Me Tired, is an always sensible and mildly profane etiquette manual for real-life manners quandaries ranging from how to deal with braggy playground moms to wondering if you can have sex in your aunt's bed on vacation to correctly grieving the dearly departed (hint: It doesn't include tattoos or truck decals). In this book, Celia Rivenbark:
    • Navigates the agonies of check splitting (“who had the gorgonzola crumbles and should we really care?”)
    • Explores the baffling aspects of airline travel (“Recline Monster” and other animals)
    • Discusses the art of the visit (always leave them wanting more . . . much more)
    • Expounds upon gym and locker etiquette (“no one wants to talk to you while you’re buck naked”)
    • Examines the conundrums of office manners (Loud talkers, cake hawkers, and Britney Sue’s unfortunate cyst)
    • And much more!
Good manners have never been more fun!
