Friday PhoDOGraphy State of the Blog Address

Schatze is preparing for her run for President.

Or, well, just world domination.

First off: we are hooked on the Game of Thrones.

We returned in one piece from SXSW.  Minimal beer spillage on clothes.  Saw lots of friends that we only seem to see there.  I forgot my camera so I didn't take many pictures.  It seemed lower key than previous years, but then again, we stayed away from 6th Street except for two nights. Eve 6 played two killer sets. I spent time with the guys answering questions about Jeri Smith Ready and her books.   I also got to see Breathe Carolina which I did video and now have to figure out how to upload from my phone.  Met the band and didn't even realize it.  Go Radio has a new single that should be the break up song for the summer.  I still have that stupid song running through my head.   I finished 4 books there and have about 20 reviews to write.

Sigh... Oh the new Christopher Moore book is spectacular.  You don't want to miss this one.
Whisper by Alyson Noel is another winner with a Ground Hog feel although it mostly takes place in Roman Times.

Second:

As soon as we returned  there was a family reunion.  Almost everyone made it except one nephew.  My oldest nephew ran in the LA Marathon.  I could follow him online which was extremely cool.  He only got half way before his leg started to bother him.  I ate too much cake, which is never a bad thing.  I think there were about 30 of us altogether.  My oldest great-niece is now in college - sigh - where did the time go?  I also felt very short.

Third:

I am horribly behind in reviews and reading.  I missed a lot of reading and writing time this week because of the travel and family stuff.  I came home to about 10 books.

My house is now clean, the laundry done and I need to go shopping since there is no food in the house except frozen stuff.  So all the major things are done and I can now go back to blogging!  '

For those of you using blogger -- there are big changes coming.  I just switched to the new look and I have to say I like it better.  The posting seems a bit easier to navigate since it is now a full screen.

Also, Gmail is changing and I am not a fan.  It just seems harder to read.

GIVEAWAY: Charity Hopping Around the World

Welcome to the Charity Hopping Around the World  Giveaway Hop!

This hop is hosted by:
I Am a Reader, Not a Writer (HERE

Reading A Little Bit of Everything

There are over a hundred blogs participating and each has their own entry rules and geographic limits, so be sure to read the rules for each one.  This hop starts March 30th and and runs through April 4th, midnight.

This hop is to spotlight my favorite charity which is DONOR'S CHOOSE which helps connect teachers with individuals to help support their classrooms.  Your child's teacher may be already listed, so be sure to check.  Since teachers spend so much of their own money on students, it is a wonderful way to help them out or help fund a special event that would otherwise be financially impossible.  In the past, my family has helped fund books for the whole classroom.

HERE IS WHAT I HAVE FOR ONE LUCKY WINNER:

REVIEW: Cruising Attitude by Heather Poole @WmMorrowBks

Book Description

March 6, 2012
Flying the not-so-friendly skies...
In her more than fifteen years as an airline flight attendant, Heather Poole has seen it all. She's witnessed all manner of bad behavior at 35,000 feet and knows what it takes for a traveler to become the most hated passenger onboard. She's slept in flight attendant crashpads in "Crew Gardens," Queens—sharing small bedrooms crammed with bunk beds with a parade of attractive women who come and go at all hours, prompting suspicious neighbors to jump to the very worst conclusions. She's watched passengers and coworkers alike escorted off the planes by police. She can tell you why it's a bad idea to fall for a pilot but can be a very good one (in her case) to date a business-class passenger. Heather knows everything about flying in a post-9/11 world—and she knows what goes on behind the scenes, things the passengers would never dream.
Heather's true stories in Cruising Attitude are surprising, hilarious, sometimes outrageously incredible—the very juiciest of "galley gossip" delightfully intermingled with the eye-opening, unforgettable chronicle of her fascinating life in the sky.

AAbout the Author

Heather Poole has been published in The Best Women's Travel Writing 2010. Her regular online column, "Galley Gossip: Confessions from the Jumpseat with Heather Poole," has received more than two million views and is featured on AOL's award-winning travel website, Gadling.com.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

I have always thought that being a flight attendant would be extremely glamorous, with decent pay, but Heather Poole points out that the starting pay is not great, the hours are weird, you never know where you will end up and you pretty much learn to sleep anywhere.  I adored the chatty style of the book and the stories are pretty hilarious.  She recounts her training which is pretty impressive.  The first job she gets is for a discount airline that has since vanished and I couldn't believe some of the details about unsafe the airplanes were for that carrier.  Well, that was until my brother showed me a picture taken back in the 70's where there is a piece of plywood blocking the cockpit and the beverage service was an ice chest pushed though the aisle.  She recounts how every flight attendant wanted to get that golden ticket for free airfare and just how difficult it was to achieve.

I was really impressed that in all the times she has flown, there never was an major disasters except for the passengers.  You will never take your seat belt off again after reading about turbulence and how many attended get hurt on the job this way.  And then, there is the abuse by the airlines themselves towards their employees. That part was just dreadful.  My favorite tale of hers when when the lead singer for her favorite rock band was on board.  She didn't recognize him at all and triple checked the passenger list since the guy sitting in the seat was past his prime and looked nothing like her hero.  I adore these inside tales so much.  If you have read any of the Babylon books, you will truly love this one, even though Poole doesn't name names.  Be sure to always be polite to your flight attendants, they have a rough job.

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: The Good Father by Noah Halwey @doubledaypub

BOOK DESCRIPTION

An intense, psychological novel about one doctor's suspense-filled quest to unlock the mind of a suspected political assassin: his twenty-year old son.

As the Chief of Rheumatology at Columbia Presbyterian, Dr. Paul Allen's specialty is diagnosing patients with conflicting symptoms, patients other doctors have given up on. He lives a contented life in Westport with his second wife and their twin sons—hard won after a failed marriage earlier in his career that produced a son named Daniel. In the harrowing opening scene of this provocative and affecting novel, Dr. Allen is home with his family when a televised news report announces that the Democratic candidate for president has been shot at a rally, and Daniel is caught on video as the assassin.

Daniel Allen has always been a good kid—a decent student, popular—but, as a child of divorce, used to shuttling back and forth between parents, he is also something of a drifter. Which may be why, at the age of nineteen, he quietly drops out of Vassar and begins an aimless journey across the United States, during which he sheds his former skin and eventually even changes his name to Carter Allen Cash.

Told alternately from the point of view of the guilt-ridden, determined father and his meandering, ruminative son, The Good Father is a powerfully emotional page-turner that keeps one guessing until the very end. This is an absorbing and honest novel about the responsibilities—and limitations—of being a parent and our capacity to provide our children with unconditional love in the face of an unthinkable situation.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

What would you do if you saw your son on the news, blamed for a horrible crime?  When Dr. Paul Allen sees his son on the news, accused of shooting the Democratic presidential nominee, he is in shock.  Daniel has always been a decent kid and even though he has had some rough years as a child of divorce, he hasn't been a problem.  Like most kids at twenty, he is searching for himself and has dropped out of college.  Told in alternating voices between Paul and Daniel, this thriller is full of action that doesn't stop.  You can tell something is not quite right with Daniel as he rambles through his story, while his father preciseness as clinical diagnostician really comes out to play.

I enjoyed this story immensely with all of the twists and turns to the end which was quite exciting.  While Paul seems to examine his first marriage and tries to understand what went wrong there and how that affected Daniel, you can see his years of medical training come out where he must search for clues in his patients and their  undiagnosed diseases.  He applies that same meticulous approach to finding out the truth in Daniel's life.  This is a story that happens around us daily but a lot of times, we just don't hear about it in the media.

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: Forever's Western Blog Tour with Katie Lane & RC Ryan @foreverromance

Description
The Truth Can Be an Irresistible Temptation . . .
As a young boy, Quinn Conway was shattered by his mother's mysterious disappearance. Today, as the oldest of the Conway brothers, his only concern is protecting his family and their ranch. One look at beautiful, strong-willed Cheyenne O'Brien tells him she's also no stranger to tragedy. A series of increasingly dangerous "accidents" are plaguing her and her land, and Quinn can't stand idly by while a woman is in danger.
Fiercely independent, Cheyenne isn't one to lean on others, yet she can't deny her attraction to the rugged rancher offering help. Soon, the passion building between them proves as wild and untamed as the land she loves-and just as impossible to resist. But a relentless enemy is about to make one final devastating move. To survive, Quinn and Cheyenne must put their cherished freedom-and their hearts-at risk . .
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
New York Times bestselling author R. C. Ryan has written more than ninety novels, both contemporary and historical. Quite an accomplishment for someone who, after her fifth child started school, gave herself the gift of an hour a day to follow her dream to become a writer.
The Unquiet, an anthology of stories by J. D. Robb, Mary Blayney, Patricia Gaffney, Mary Kay McComas, and R. C. Ryan writing as Ruth Ryan Langan, was published in fall 2011 and became a New York Times bestseller.
In a career spanning more than twenty years, Ms. Ryan has given dozens of radio, television, and print interviews across the country and Canada, and has been quoted in such diverse publications as the Wall Street Journal and Cosmopolitan. MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT
The story takes us to Quinn, the eldest of the three Conway boys and since his mother disappeared when they were kids, has taken the brunt of the abandonment.  So when Quinn, who loves nature and all it's creatures finds one of his now adult wolf pups dead, he blames the nearby rancher, Cheyenne.  She had good reason to believe that this wold was killing her cattle.  Cute meet?  I guess for the ranching world, this is normal.  The pair find common ground even though they seem to be opposites.  There is a lot of drama building with Cheyenne and you wonder if she is strong enough to pull through this latest development in her life.  Overall, a great romance that takes this cowboy story in a new direction.  For some reason, I was really reminded of parts of Little House on the Prairie where one calamity after another seems to follow the Wilder family.

Description
Shirlene Dalton has it all: a dream marriage to a man who spoils her rotten and the most outrageous mansion Bramble, Texas, has ever seen. But when her husband unexpectedly dies, Shirlene finds herself right back where she started-in a rundown trailer on the wrong side of the tracks. Never the type to let a little bad luck and a whole heap of heartache get her down, Shirlene is ready to prove to the local gossips she can make it on her own... until she ends up living next door to the most tempting cowboy in town.
Billy Wilkes has a score to settle and a plan to wipe Bramble right off the map. But when his sexy, redheaded neighbor figures out what he's up to, his good ol' boy charm won't be enough to save him. With the town on his tail, Billy will have to come clean quick -- or kiss Shirlene goodbye.(
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Katie Lane's interest in romance was sparked in high school in the backseat of a '65 Mustang-okay, so maybe it wasn't romance as much as raging teenage hormones. Still, coupled with a wild imagination, those make-out sessions inspired many a steamy storyline along with a strong belief that true love does prevail. Katie lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the owner of that Mustang and would love to hear from her readers.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT
This is a very wonderful and humorous read about Branble, Texas filled with characters that are so believably wacky that they are believable.  Shirlene has spunk and the need to survive which will make you proud of her.  I want a Bubba for my own since he is just so darn hunky and down to earth.  As with any small town, there are the typical types like the ancient Moses, who knows everything that is happening much like my neighbor growing up but appears to be asleep.  Don't let any of the outward appearances fool you in this story, the characters are deep and full of fun.  Oh, and happily ever after?  I should hope so!  Overall, this is a fun and lighthearted read.  I can't wait for the next one.

Book Description

July 10, 2012

Gigi Levangie Grazer, the New York Times bestselling author of The Starter Wife, returns with a hilarious and spirited tale of love—both lost and found.

L.A. is no place for widows. This is what forty-four-year-old Hannah Bernal quickly discovers after the tragic death of her handsome and loving husband, John. Misery and red-rimmed eyes are little tolerated in the land of the beautiful. But life stumbles on: Hannah’s sweet three-year-old daughter, Ellie, needs to be dropped off at her overpriced preschool, while Hannah herself must get back to work in order to pay the bills on “Casa Sugar,” the charming Spanish-styled bungalow they call home.

Fortunately, Hannah has her “Grief Team” for emotional support: earth mother and fanatical animal lover Chloe, who finds a potential blog post in every moment; aspiring actress Aimee, who has her cosmetic surgeon on speed dial; and Jay, Hannah’s TV producing partner, who has a penchant for Mr. Wrong. But after a series of mishaps and bizarre occurrences, one of which finds Hannah in a posh Santa Monica jail cell, her friends start to fear for her sanity. To make matters worse, John left their financial affairs in a disastrous state. And when Hannah is dramatically fired from her latest producing gig, she finds herself in danger of losing her house, her daughter, and her mind.

One night, standing in her backyard under a majestic avocado tree, in the throes of grief, Hannah breaks down and asks, “Why?” The answer that comes back—Why not?—begins an astounding journey of discovery and transformation that leads Hannah to her own truly extraordinary life after death.

GIVEAWAY! On Celestial Music by Rick Moody @littlebrown

Book Description

March 21, 2012
Rick Moody has been writing about music as long as he has been writing, and this book provides an ample selection from that output. His anatomy of the word cool reminds us that, in the postwar 40s, it was infused with the feeling of jazz music but is now merely a synonym for neat. "On Celestial Music," which was included in Best American Essays, 2008, begins with a lament for the loss in recent music of the vulnerability expressed by Otis Redding's masterpiece, "Try a Little Tenderness;" moves on to Moody's infatuation with the ecstatic music of the Velvet Underground; and ends with an appreciation of Arvo Part and Purcell, close as they are to nature, "the music of the spheres."

Contemporary groups covered include Magnetic Fields (their love songs), Wilco (the band's and Jeff Tweedy's evolution), Danielson Famile (an evangelical rock band), The Pogues (Shane McGowan's problems with addiction), The Lounge Lizards (John Lurie's brilliance), and Meredith Monk, who once recorded a song inspired by Rick Moody's story "Boys." Always both incisive and personable, these pieces inspire us to dive as deeply into the music that enhances our lives as Moody has done--and introduces us to wonderful sounds we may not know.

AAbout the Author

Rick Moody (born Hiram Frederick Moody, III on October 18, 1961, New York City), is an American novelist and short story writer best known for The Ice Storm (1994), a chronicle of the dissolution of two suburban Connecticut families over Thanksgiving weekend in 1973, which brought widespread acclaim, and became a bestseller; it was later made into a feature film.
