Waiting on Wednesday: Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look.

Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life.

As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.

His life depends on it.

She has picked up life where she left off when she was alive, living with her parents and dog in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. When she’s summoned before The Council, she learns that the afterlife isn’t just an eternity of leisure. She’s been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a possibly cute, seemingly nerdy boy who’s definitely hiding something. They return to earth together for Riley’s first assignment, a Radiant Boy who’s been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But all of that was before he met Riley . . .

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

I read this in just a few hours and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I guess this is a spin off of the Immortal Series, which I have on my shelf, but unread.  If this is any indication of the writing, I am going to pull them out and start them right away.  This is the debut of this series and it starts out wonderfully and I can't wait for the next one.

It is written in such an easy way that you can really believe this is a twelve year old girl and what she is thinking.  I love how she comes into her own and develops skills that make the most out of her personality.  This should get even the most reticent readers on board.  I am glad to add this to my recommended books for younger teens and older kids.  Nicely done!

The Strange Case of the Composer and his Judge by Patricia Duncker (Book Review 2010-109)

Product Description

The bodies are discovered on New Year's Day, sixteen dead in the freshly fallen snow. The adults lie stiff in a semicircle; the children, in pajamas and overcoats, are curled at their feet. When he hears the news, Commissaire André Schweigen knows who to call: Dominique Carpentier, the Judge, also known as the "sect hunter." Carpentier sweeps into the investigation in thick glasses and red gloves, and together the Commissaire and the Judge begin searching for clues in a nearby chalet. Among the decorations and unwrapped presents of a seemingly ordinary holiday, they find a leather-bound book, filled with mysterious code, containing maps of the stars. The book of the Faith leads them to the Composer, Friedrich Grosz, who is connected in some way to every one of the dead. Following his trail, Carpentier, Schweigen, and the Judge's assistant, Gaëlle, are drawn into a world of complex family ties, seductive music, and ancient cosmic beliefs. Hurtling breathlessly through the vineyards of Southern France to the gabled houses of Lübeck, Germany, through cathedrals, opera houses, museums, and the cobbled streets of an Alpine village, this ferocious new novel is a metaphysical mystery of astonishing verve and power.

About the Author

Patricia Duncker is the author of the novels Hallucinating Foucault (winner of the Dillons First Fiction Award and the McKitterick Prize), The Deadly Space Between, and The Doctor, as well as collections of short stories and essays. Her work has been shortlisted for the Macmillan Silver Pen Award and the Commonwealth Writer's Prize. She is Professor of Contemporary Literature at the University of Manchester.

LOVED IT

This is not a book I would normally pick up to read on my own.  When  I did try it out and I found I couldn't put it down.  It is a strange tale about the Judge (a little like the district attorney in the US) and a Composer (again, to me, in the US he would have been called a conductor).  Once you get passed the little language issues and pull out your dictionary, the story is truly enjoyable.  I found myself thinking about these characters long after I put the book down.  I would love to read more about the main character, Dominique Carpentier.

Where's My Wand by Eric Poole (Book Review 2010-108)

Product Description

Augusten Burroughs, David Sedaris, and David Rakoff have all produced winning memoirs of their demented, alternately heartrending and sidesplitting late- twentieth-century American childhoods. Now, first-time author Eric Poole joins their ranks with his chronicle of a childhood gone hilariously and heartbreakingly awry in the Midwest of the 1970s. From the age of eight through early adolescence, Poole sought refuge from his obsessive-compulsive mother, sadistic teachers, and sneering schoolyard thugs in the Scotchgarded basement of his family's suburban St. Louis tract house. There, emulating his favorite TV character, Endora from Bewitched, he wrapped himself in a makeshift caftan and cast magical spells in an effort to maintain control over the rapidly shifting ground beneath his feet. But when a series of tragic events tested Eric's longstanding belief that magic can vanquish evil, he began to question the efficacy of his incantations, embarking on a spiritual journey that led him to discover the magic that comes only from within.

About the Author

Eric Poole is the secret love child of Fran Lebowitz and David Sedaris. But oddly taller. A VP of radio marketing for a major media company, he resides in Los Angeles with his partner of eight years.

LOVED IT

This book is a gem!  What a wonderful memoir, much in the spirit of Augusten Burroughs and  David Sedaris, this book takes you right to the heart of the 70's.  I laughed out loud quite a bit while reading this and even thought the author had a tough time of it growing up, his spirit never seemed to diminish.  Imagine growing up with an obsessive mother with a cleaning bug that goes beyond normal.  Eric learns to cope with this as well as a hearing loss in one ear and figuring out that he is really gay.  This was truly a pleasure to read.

GIVEAWAY! Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh (Book Review 2010-107)

Product Description

In his first book, Tony Hsieh - the widely-admired CEO of on-line shoe retailer, Zappos, explains how he created a unique culture and commitment to service that aims to improve the lives of its employees, customers, vendors and backers. Using anecdotes and stories from his own experiences and from other companies, Hsieh provides concrete ways that companies can achieve unprecedented success. Even better, he shows how creating happiness and record results go hand-in-hand. He starts with the 'Why' in a section where he narrates his quest to understand the science of happiness. Then he runs through the ten Zappos 'Core Values' such as 'Deliver WOW through Service,' 'Create Fun and A Little Weirdness' and 'Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit' and explains how you and your colleagues should come up with your own. Hsieh then details many of the unique practices at Zappos that have made it the success it is today, such as the philosphy of allocating marketing money into the customer experience, thereby allowing repeat customers and word-of-mouth be their true form of marketing. He also explains why Zappos's main priority is company culture and his belief that once you get the culture right, everything else - great customer service, long-term branding - will happen on its own. Finally, Hsieh explains how Zappos employees actually apply the Core Values to improving their lives outside of work - and to making a difference in their communities and the world --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

About the Author

Tony Hsieh became involved with Zappos as an advisor and investor in 1999, about two months after the company was founded. He eventually joined Zappos full time in 2000.

Under his leadership, Zappos has grown gross merchandise sales from $1.6M in 2000 to over $1 billion in 2008 by focusing relentlessly on customer service.

This is a truly inspiring story of success that any one in business should read.  By creating happiness among employees, Tony has proven that this will lead to a profitable company.  I can say for a fact that this works since one of the best jobs I ever had used these same principles and the company was quite profitable as well as the happy employees.  I really enjoyed this one both as a memoir and business read.

This easy to use guide is perfect for everyone!  It is filled with easy to use recipes to make your skin glow.  I tried several of the simple one ingredient ideas such as an using the juice from an orange to get that all important Vitamin C as a rub.   I left it on for 5 minutes and then rinsed with some milk on a cotton ball.  I did find that milk with fat works much better than fat free.  There are several other easy ideas as well.  The most important thing I found in this book is a helper for dry skin.  I used an avocado and some almond oil in paste and it worked better than my normal moisturizer.  The best thing about the ideas in this book is that for any one with sensitive skin is pretty much guaranteed that you won't have any nasty reactions.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Paul is Undead is a stroke of brilliance!  This is such a clever take on the typical, bland rock biography that satires the linear style of those familiar magazine interviews of all parties involved.  You truly believe that the Beatles could have been zombies but only needed small portions of brains to continue to exist.  It also answers the question of: what if the Beatles had continued on.  Yeah, sure John could have still been shot but would have survived.  Well, unless they really do break apart--literally.

I also can't wait for the movie version of this book.  It looks to be very promising since it is the same company that produced Pulp Fiction.  Alan Goldsher also has another music-monster mash up in the works as well.  This next one is about Elvis as Frankenstein.  That sounds amazing as well.

BLOG TOUR: Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives by Josie Brown (Book Review 2010-104)

Product Description

Suburbia is a jungle, filled with lots of vicious creatures. Take the Paradise Heights Women’s League board. Lyssa Harper should have warned golden-haired DILF du jour Harry Wilder what he was getting into when she invited him to meet the mommies who run their suburban, gated community. At least he brought cupcakes. Since meeting the former Master-of-the-Universe turned stay-at-home single dad, Lyssa has been his domestic Sherpa, teaching him the ins and outs of suburban life. She just didn’t realize her friends would show up at his house unannounced with casseroles, leopard-print bikini briefs, and plans to rearrange his kitchen cabinets.
The truth is, if Harry and his wife, the neighborhood’s "perfect couple," can call it quits, what does that mean for everyone else? Lyssa’s husband, Ted, is a great father, but he pays her Pilates-pumped momtourage more attention than he does his own wife. Her friends gossip about the neighbors while ignoring their own problems: infertility, infidelity, and eating disorders.
When Harry sets boundaries with his new fan club, he is exiled from the neighborhood’s in-clique. But Lyssa refuses to snub him. What she never expects is the explosive impact her ongoing friendship with Harry will have on her close-knit pals—and on her marriage.

This is the perfect summer read.  I completely lost myself in this one and I really think a lot of this story is based on fact.  Take one gated community and mix it with too much money, quite a few unsuspecting spouses, some infidelity and there you have it:  perfect summer read.  Even the community's name of Paradise Heights has to signal that all is not right here.  Lyssa is a likely heroine in that she always tries to do the right thing and doesn't even realize her own husband is taking advantage of her good nature.  I look forward to another book by this author and will have to go search out her first two novels.

The Transformation of Bartholomew Fortuno by Ellen Bryson (Book Review 2010-103)

Product Description

Water for Elephants meets Geek Love in this riveting first novel, an enchanting love story set in P. T. Barnum's American Museum in 1865 New York City
Bartholomew Fortuno, the World's Thinnest Man, believes that his unusual body is a gift. Hired by none other than P. T. Barnum to work at his spectacular American Museum—a modern marvel of macabre displays, breathtaking theatrical performances, and live shows by Barnum's cast of freaks and oddities—Fortuno has reached the pinnacle of his career. But after a decade of constant work, he finds his sense of self, and his contentment within the walls of the museum, flagging. When a carriage pulls up outside the museum in the dead of night, bearing Barnum and a mysterious veiled woman—rumored to be a new performer—Fortuno's curiosity is piqued. And when Barnum asks Fortuno to follow her and report back on her whereabouts, his world is turned upside down. Why is Barnum so obsessed with this woman? Who is she, really? And why has she taken such a hold on the hearts of those around her?
Set in the New York of 1865, a time when carriages rattled down cobblestone streets, raucous bordellos near the docks thrived, and the country was mourning the death of President Lincoln, The Transformation of Bartholomew Fortuno is a moving novel about human appetites and longings. With pitch-perfect prose, Ellen Bryson explores what it means to be profoundly unique—and how the power of love can transcend even the greatest divisions.

About the Author

Ellen Bryson holds a BA in English from Columbia University and an MA in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. Formerly a modern dancer, she lives in Southern California. This is her first novel.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

This has to be one of the best novels I have read this year.  After a slow start, I fell in love with all of the characters which are based on the freaks and geeks of the circus and somewhat on fact.  Bartholomew, who is billed as the thinnest man on earth has his world come apart when he meets the bearded lady.  This turns out to be a love triangle in some sense.  The story is really one of acceptance of yourself and others.  This is one moments that just shocked me, but it made the story really make sense and come alive.  I also should have seen it coming.

Bryson does a super job of interweaving the fact with her fiction.  She places handwritten notes, playbills and other documents within the pages.  I really enjoy off-kilter stories and this one just really hit me right.  I look forward to another one by this author.  You will probably enjoy this if you liked Geek Love by Katherine Dunn or Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen.

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff (Book Review 2010-102)

Product Description

Mackie Doyle is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is fighting to survive in the human world. Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.
Edward Scissorhands meets The Catcher in the Rye in this wildly imaginative and frighteningly beautiful horror novel about an unusual boy and his search for a place to belong.

LOVED IT

This story really defines creepiness and how a seemly normal community has an literally underground magical problem.  Mackie is a replacement child in which the fairy (the author doesn't specifically use that term) switch out a human baby for one of theirs, one mostly likely to die. I feel in love with Mackie and how his family loves him even though he is not really theirs.  His sister Emma states that she decided to care for him by saying "I choose to care for you" and I am paraphrasing here.  I really hope that this will be made into a series since I am still thinking about the characters. You will probably love this one if you enjoy Holly Black.

LOVED IT

YUM!  This is definitely a new urban fantasy series to watch.  I really bought into the whole "there is a werewolf in New Orleans" vibe of the book.  I would have like the heroine, Charlotte, to have been a bit more feminine, but I guess the back story of her life and it's heartache would account for how she reacts and uses people to get what she wants.  She namely starts out using Max, who is plainly in love with her and has his own terrible upbringing.  There is real chemistry between them and it really heats up.  It will be interesting to see where this story goes.  This is one hot read.

LOVED IT

This is going to be one hot book!  I didn't know anything about this book and only signed up to read about it when I saw that one of the characters was named Frankie Stein.  How could you not love a character named that?  I wasn't disappointed at all.  This is one of those books I am going to recommend to all of my mom friends for their younger teens.  The story has lots of important lessons, is extremely cute and of course a marketing blitz to go along with it.

I started to Google the title to find out more about it and was surprised to find it's own adorable site.
Monster High
Which will go more "live" the second week of July.  There are some cute clips of the show there.  Of course, there will be toys to go along with this marketing blitz since this is all the work of Mattel.  There is also talk of a musical -- um, shades of Glee anyone? Now, that I think about it, the book really has a lot in common with Glee with all of the misfits.  This will probably appeal to girls who enjoy Kelly McClymber or Marlene Perez.

But when real sparks fly with Brady, is it a fantasy come true or a disaster in disguise?

LOVED IT

This is the perfect way to lose yourself on a summer afternoon.  This could have been retitled something cute with a takeoff on the Prince and the Pauper since there is a similar theme.  Veronica has faults, lots of them, but not quite as many as the star she is paid to impersonate.  Of course it all goes south and both Veronica and Haley finds their true purpose in life.  I really enjoyed this one!

Waiting on Wednesday: Such a Pretty Face by Cathy Lamb

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Product Description

In this warm, funny, thoroughly candid novel, acclaimed author Cathy Lamb introduces an unforgettable heroine who's half the woman she used to be, and about to find herself for the first time...Two years and 170 pounds ago, Stevie Barrett was wheeled into an operating room for surgery that most likely saved her life. Since that day, a new Stevie has emerged, one who walks without wheezing, plants a garden for self-therapy, and builds and paints fantastical wooden chairs. At thirty-five, Stevie is the one thing she never thought she'd be: thin. But for everything that's changed, some things remain the same. Stevie's shyness refuses to melt away. She still can't look her neighbours' gorgeous great-nephew in the eye. The Portland law office where she works remains utterly dysfunctional, as does her family - the aunt, uncle, and cousins who took her in when she was a child. To top it off, her once supportive best friend clearly resents her weight loss. By far the biggest challenge in Stevie's new life lies in figuring out how to define her new self. Collaborating with her cousins to plan her aunt and uncle's problematic fortieth anniversary party, Stevie starts to find some surprising answers - about who she is, who she wants to be, and how the old Stevie evolved in the first place. And with each revelation, she realizes the most important part of her transformation may not be what she's lost, but the courage and confidence she's gathering, day by day.

GUEST POST: STEPHEN V. MASSE, author of SHORT CIRCUS

I would like to thank Stephen Masse for stopping by to talk about being a writer:

The second year out of college, I wrote my third novel.

I remember in digital clarity cranking that last page out of the electric typewriter, salivating over the recognition and financial stability I would soon have. The conventional wisdom at the time was to send the book to one publisher at a time, wait for a response, and if the work is returned, then send to another. Yah, right.

For years I followed the general rules while continuing to write other novels. I got really good at playing book traffic controller between the U. S. Post Office and every publisher in the country, starting with the big guys and working my way down to the smallest art houses. My cover letters to many well-known editors at several publishing houses were answered personally, though negatively. I saved money from my day job to pay for assessments of my writing, and also began to peddle the books around to literary agencies, with the same negative results.

Whoever said, “Do what you love and the money will follow,” never talked to a writer. Here I was after a decade or so of writing like a madman, and the only signings I was doing was when I signed my name on a customer’s wall: “Paint & wallpaper by Steve Masse, almost starving writer (date).”

Now fast-forward to 21st century. Imagine persisting like this for over thirty years. Frustrating just doesn’t begin to describe it! And well-meaning friends tell you that you must be doing something wrong, or you should try writing about (*fill in the blank), or my personal favorite, “you’re not ready for success.” Then imagine finally getting that book published, and within six months winning a literary award and getting a second contract for an electronic edition.

True story. Thirty-odd years.

Lesson learned: Do what you love, get your money some other way.
Lesson 2: You’ll probably have time for both.

LOVED  IT

I am late to the party as far as author Cara Elliott is concerned, but it won't take me long to catch up.  Even though this is the second book in the series, I had no trouble becoming immediately involved with the characters.  There is wonderful dialogue and a lot of action.  And I mean A LOT of action.  The fighting between the two leads, Alessandra and James, either leads to bed or apologies.  I also enjoyed the historical setting of Bath and England during the nineteenth century and I love to read about strong, independent women, so this one fit the bill nicely.

Sleepless by Cyn Balog (Book Review 2010-97)

 Description

Eron DeMarchelle isn't supposed to feel this connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce his human charges to sleep. Though he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn't encouraged to do so. After all, becoming too involved in one human's life could prevent him from helping others get their needed rest.

But he can't deny that he feels something for Julia, a lonely girl with fiery red hair and sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. In the past, Eron has broken rules to protect Julia, but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can't reach her. Eron's time as a Sandman is coming to a close, and his replacement doesn't seem to care about his charges. Worse, Julia is facing dangers she doesn't recognize, and Eron, as he transitions back to being human, may be the only one who can save her. . . .

Even once they've become human again, Sandmen are forbidden to communicate with their charges. But Eron knows he won't be able to forget Julia. Will he risk everything for a chance to be with the girl he loves?

Cyn Balog's follow-up to Fairy Tale has more wit, more supernatural delights, and more star-crossed romance! Teen girls will love this story of a Sandman who falls in love with his human charge.

    LOVED IT

Cyn Balog has quickly become one of my favorite new authors. In her latest retelling of a fairy tale, we get to hear about the Sandman.  Much like the tooth fairy, I grew up on this folk tale about how this person (the Sandmen) spread sand that sends you to sleep.  This is a quick read and the culture of Sandmen (Sandpeople?) is described  and you slip into another world.  Eron makes a wonderful narrator and Julia develops into a good foil for him.  I thought Griffin was a little bit trite for a villain and too overly wrought.  He really needed the stuffing knocked out of him.  I could see he needed to be evil to make the story work, but he only had Julia's love as his redeeming quality.

That said, this is a nice summer read.  I am not going into plot detail since the story is so short, it would be giving the whole thing away.
